Dear Parishioners,

Are your Christmas decorations still adorning your home? Are you still sitting on your couch with the glimmering lights of your Christmas tree in the background lighting up the corner of your sacred space? Are you still reflecting on how “Christmas went for you last year”? This is all normal. While the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks the close of the Christmas Season, which was celebrated on Sunday, January 12, 2020, tradition has it that Christmas decorations can remain until this

weekend…The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. If you are thinking, yes, mine are still up!

How do we get this tradition? As noted, our liturgical season of Christmas concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is also the first Sunday of Ordinary Time. However, after the Roman Missal was revised in 1962, the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, formally known as the “Tridentine Mass/Latin Mass”, the end of the Christmas Season was fixed to January 13th. But, prior to this, the tradition was to close the Christmas Season with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, February 2, which is also known as “Candlemass”, when a representation of candles that are used in the church are blessed (we continue the blessing of the candles on this day). This tradition was held because the time between Christmas Day and February 2nd was 40 days, which is emphasized in Sacred Scripture.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is a beautiful celebration of Christ being presented to Simeon in the Temple. What is beautiful is God’s promise coming to fruition, that Simeon will see the Christ child before he dies. The conclusion of this weekend’s Gospel is beautiful; Simeons’ proclamation to God:

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”

Simeon is giving testimony of God’s fulfillment but also the splendor of the Light that he has witnessed, not only the light that fills the corner of the room. NO, the light that fills every inch of the room… especially every inch of our being! It is this Light that awakens us, guides us and goes before us. It is the light that reveals all things.

Speaking about the light that reveals all things, I have vowed to be transparent in my ministry. Therefore, please find on page 4 a copy of the 2018-2019 Year-End Fiscal Financial Report/Budget. You will see we have ended the year in the BLACK! That's because of YOU! Your generosity truly overwhelms me and I am beyond grateful.

I plan to do everything in my power to continue being a good steward. Here are some insights as to the financial reserves of the parish and some decisions that I have made thus far, in collaboration with my staff and finance committee (thank you to my staff and Finance Council who assist me in saving for our future):

1) When I assumed the responsibility of Administrator on June 30, 2019, the parish was left with $213,000.00 in reserves for the Church and $5,600.00 in reserves for the Academy, (Bishop Ray did his best considering we renovated the Church and School). The diocese recommends that a parish have 6 months’ worth of monies in reserves. For us that should be at least $550,000.00, in our Church reserves and we should have at least $250,000.00 in our Academy reserves;

2) Given we had $213,000.00 in reserves, our two biggest bills arrived in September for (1) insurance for $85,000.00 and (2) our Diocesan Assessment for $70,000.00. We had the option to either pay these amounts in one lump sum or in 2 payments or 8. In order to save as much money, I had withdrawn $155,000.00 in October from our reserves to pay these bills, leaving us with $58,000.00. I am pleased to inform you that we have replenished our reserves and we currently have a balance of $208,000.00. Once again, because of your generosity, being awarded two grants that I have applied for, and the monies over goal for the Generations of Faith and the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal, we have been able to deposit $150,000.00! We were able to accomplish this in just three months…WOW;

3) In addition, we have been able to deposit $6,400.00 into our reserves for the Academy bringing our total reserves for the Academy to $12,000.00;

4) We currently have NO outstanding bills whether that be to vendors, ordinary expenses, medical and pension for our employees…We are up-to-date;

5) I have and continue to find ways to cut back where necessary.

So what are my goals:

1) If I am appointed as your Pastor, my first term would be for 6 years. I hope that by the conclusion of my first term, to have at least $600,000.00. This is a big undertaking, but I know we can do it;

2) If I am not appointed as your pastor, for some unknown reason, sometime this year we should be informed, I hope to have in reserves at least $325,000.00 by time I am replaced;

3) If I am your pastor and renewed for a second term, I hope to have $1,000,000.00 in reserves…a bigger undertaking, but once again, I know we can do it!

The future of St. Kevin Parish is looking bright! Thank you so much for all you do!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the financial statement or any questions you may have for our parish!

In the Good Shepherd,

Fr. Robert Mema
