On the flip side, after a hot start, George Washington has lost four of six. • Junior outfielder John Brue is the reigning Big 5 Baseball Player of the Week after driving in seven runs and scoring five over the course of four games between March 1015. • The Hawks and Colonials met on the first weekend of conference play in 2014 as well. Saint Joseph’s took the first two games of the series before George Washington pulled out the finale at Barcroft Park. Reigning Big 5 Player of the Week John Brue hit his team leading fifth home run of the year and Stefan Kancylarz added three hits for the Hawks, who scored in five consecutive innings between the second and the sixth. On Tuesday, the Hawks traveled to Bucknell and cruised past the Bison, 92. Peter Sitaras was 2for4 with three runs scored in the game, while Deon Stafford was 2for3 with a pair of runs scored of his own. Last weekend, SJU won its first two home games of the season over Wagner and Northeastern. After a 72 win over the Seahawks on Friday, Pat Vanderslice, Jack Stover, and Lansing Veeder combined for a threehit, 20 shutout of Northeastern on Sunday. FRIENDLY CONFINES: John  W.  Smithson  Field,  now   in   its   fourthseason,  is  the  home  of  Saint  Joseph’s  baseball.    The  field  featuresa  synthetic  AstroTurf  3D  GameDay  Grass  surface  and  a  dirt  pitch-­‐ing  mound;  the  turf   is  the  industry-­‐standard  surface  that  is  cur-­‐rently  in  use  by  the  Tampa  Bay  Rays  and  Toronto  Blue  Jays  of  theAmerican  League.    Located  on  the  James  J.  Maguire  ‘58  Campus,the   facility  also   features  spacious  dugouts,  elevated  bullpens   inright  field,  a  press  box,  and  bleacher  seating  for  400  spectators.Fans  can  also  watch  from  along  the  fence  down  each  of  the  foullines  and  from  the  berm  in  right  center  field.    The  opening  of  theballpark  brought  varsity  baseball  back   to  Hawk  Hill   for   the   firsttime  since  1958.

PUTTIN’  ON THE FRITZ: The  Hawks  have  increased  their  win  totalin  each  of   Fritz  Hamburg’s   six  previous   seasons  as  head  coach.The  Hawks  have  averaged  better  than  23  wins  per  season  underHamburg,  the  highest  mark  in  school  history,  and  Hamburg  cur-­‐rently  ranks  as  Saint  Joseph’s  second-­‐winningest  baseball  coachof  all-­‐time.

CLIMBING THE RANKS: With   the   Hawks’   11-­‐5   triumph   overFlorida   International   on   March   10,   head   coach   Fritz   Hamburgrecorded  his  143rd   career   victory,   all   in  a  Hawk  uniform.     Thatmoved  him  into  second  place  on  SJU’s  all-­‐time  wins  list,  trailingonly  Chris   Loschiavo,  who   recorded  184  wins  with  Hawks   from1987-­‐96.

WELCOME BACK: David   Valesente,   a   2010   graduate   of   SaintJoseph’s,  has  returned  to  Hawk  Hill  as  a  volunteer  assistant  coachfor   a   second   season.     Fifth   in   program  history  with   216   careerhits,   Valesente   spent   three   seasons   in   professional   baseball,including   a   stint   with   the   Pittsburgh   Pirates   organization.Coincidentally,   Valesente’s   father,   George,   coached   SJU   headman  Fritz  Hamburg  when  he  was  an  undergrad  at  Ithaca  College.

BIG (5) MEN ON CAMPUS: Formed  in  2006  as  the  Diamond  Five,Philadelphia  Big  5  Baseball  aims  to  increase  exposure  for  collegebaseball   in   the   Philadelphia   area.     The   organization   selects   aPitcher  and  Player  of  the  Week  throughout  the  year  and  namesan  All-­‐Big  5  Team  and  award  winners  at  the  end  of  the  season.    Alist  of  Saint  Joseph’s  weekly  award  winners  appears  in  the  box  atthe  bottom  of  this  page.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS: Coaches   around   the   Atlantic   10   havetaken  notice  of  the  resurgence  of  the  Saint  Joseph’s  baseball  pro-­‐gram,  voting  the  Hawks  fifth  in  the  conference’s  preseason  poll.It  is  SJU’s  highest  preseason  league  ranking  in  recent  memory.

CENTURIONS   CLUB: Senior   Stefan   Kancylarz   ranks   11th   in   pro-­‐gram  history  with  188  career  hits.    He  is  the  only  active  Hawk  toreach  the  100-­‐hit  plateau  in  his  Saint  Joseph’s  career.

FOR WHOM THE (LIBERTY) BELL TOLLS: 2015   marks   the   24thyear   of   the   annual   Liberty   Bell   Classic,   a   tournament   featuringSaint  Joseph’s  and  seven  other  Division  I  schools  in  the  area.    Thechampionship  game  is  held  at  Citizens  Bank  Park,  home  of  MajorLeague   Baseball’s   Philadelphia   Phillies.     The   Hawks   have   nowmade  five  appearances   in  the  championship  game,  winning  thetitle  in  two  of  the  last  three  seasons  (2012,  2014).

STARTING OFF RIGHT: Saint   Joseph’s   has   won   its   conferenceopener  in  all  six  of  Fritz  Hamburg’s  seasons  on  Hawk  Hill,  and  willaim  to  continue  the  streak  on  Saturday.    In  five  of  those  six  sea-­‐sons,  the  Hawks  have  started  league  play  2-­‐0.

NICE WORK,  ROOK: Freshman  Justin  Aungst  made  his  collegiatedebut  on  February  20  and  made  it  count,  tossing  three  shutoutinnings  of   relief  and  earning  the  win  as  SJU  opened  the  seasonwith  a  2-­‐1  win  at  Loyola  Marymount.    Aungst  was   later  namedthe  Atlantic  10  Rookie  of  the  Week  for  his  efforts.

YOU’RE MY BOY,   BRUE: John   Brue   hit   .400   over   a   four-­‐gamestretch,  with  five  runs  scored,  seven  RBI,  and  two  home  runs  asthe  Hawks  went  3-­‐1  from  March  10-­‐15.    Brue  was  voted  the  Big  5Baseball  Player  of  the  Week.

HEATING UP: After  a  slow  start  to  the  season,  the  Saint  Joseph’sbats  have   come  around   in  a  major  way.     The  Hawks   scored  17runs  through  their  first  nine  games  before  breaking  out  for  sevenin  more  in  five  of  their  last  six.    SJU  has  scored  49  runs  in  its  last50  innings  at  bat.

TOP-­‐SHELF  BRUE: Junior  outfielder  John  Brue  has  hit  five  homeruns  through  the  first  15  games  of  the  season,  tops  in  the  Atlantic10  through  March  20.
