STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “… the Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” (EPHESIANS 3:6)

Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He made us all one body with Him. We were all given different gifts; we all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all “be one” in this Year of Mercy

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD ~ JANUARY 3, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Among things that happened in 2015:

∎ Europe’s abandonment of Christianity has continued to worsen. Catholic Church leaders in the Netherlands, where 42.1% of people now describe themselves as “unaffiliated,” predict that 2/3 of their 1,600 churches will be decommissioned in the next ten years. St. Joseph’s in Arnhem has been turned into a skateboarding venue. A Lutheran church in Edinburgh is now a Frankenstein-themed bar. ∎ Muslim terrorists committed two atrocities in Paris, killing 12 in a January attack on the offices of the controversial satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo (and four more at a kosher deli) and 129 in coordinated attacks in November. ∎ In an early-morning attack on the dorms of Kenya’s Garissa University, gunmen from Somali-based al-Shabaab killed at least 147 students who couldn’t recite the Shahada (the Muslim creed). Kenyan Bishop Anthony Muheria noted that 700 students were taken hostage, but only Christians were killed. He referred to the “deafening silence” of the international media following the massacre. ∎ In April, a 66-foot boat crammed with 900 passengers capsized in the Mediterranean, 60 miles off the coast of Libya, killing 850. Since 2011, an estimated 300,000 refugees have reached Italy, and 3,200 have died trying. ∎ On April 25, an earthquake struck Nepal, leaving more than 4,000 dead in and near Katmandu. Harka Bahadur Joshi, a farmer who lost a son, a daughter-in-law and granddaughter, said, at their funeral: “May your souls rest in peace. Losing you has turned my heart to stone.” Geeta Thepa, who lost her daughter, said that “Nobody will love me as much as she did.” ∎ In May, nine died when violence erupted at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas, as the Banditos and the Cossaks, two rival biker gangs, clashed. There are an estimated 300 outlaw biker gangs in the U.S. Undercover AFT agent Carolos Canino says, “They pride themselves on living outside of society’s norms. They pride themselves on adhering to their own rules.” ∎ In June, metally distrubed Dylann Roof killed 9 participants at a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. When Vester Flanagan killed two CBS television station employees in Roanoake, VA, in August, he left a 23-page fax that said the Charleston church killings helped set him off: “What sent me over the top was the church shooting. And my hollow point bullets have the victims’ initials on them.” ∎ In August, on a Brussels to Parish train, U.S. airman

Spencer Stone and two of his boyhood friends tackled a Moroccan who was armed with an AK-47 and 8 ammunition magazines. French President Hollande gave them France’s “Legion of Honor” award. ∎ Kim David, a government clerk in Kentucky, refused, on religious grounds, to issue marriage licenses to a gay couple. Federal Judge David Bunning ordered her jailed. She was released when her subordinates were willing to issue such licenses. Ms. Davis’s position was,

in effect, that she was seeking a reasonable accom-modation so she could exercise her own religious rights. Davis admitted that “I used to live for the devil, and I was good at it. Now I want to live for Jesus Christ, and I want to be good at that too.”

∎ The Little Sisters of the Poor and several other Christian charities and universities will have their case heard by the Supreme Court next March, a decision that will determine whether the government can compel them, against their religious convictions, to offer their employees contraceptive coverage.

Pope Francis dominated the year’s highlights in Catholic life. Many had to do with his triumphant visit to Washington, New York and Philadelphia, where vast crowds greeted him.

∎ Addressing 80,000 members of the Communion and Liberation movement in St. Peter’s Square on March 15, the tenth anniversary of the death of its founder, Monsignor Luigi Guissani, Pope Francis recalled a saying of the great composer Gustav Mahler, that faithfulness to tradition “is not to preserve the ashes but to pass on the flame.” Jesuit Father James Schall of Georgetown University remembered that the Holy Father had said something similar in his encyclical Evangelii Gaudium (“The Joy of the Gospel”): “Today’s vast and rapid cultural changes demand that we constantly seek ways of expressing unchanging truths in a language which brings out their abiding newness.” ∎ Preparing for the major emphasis of his visit to Philadelphia, Pope Francis, preaching at a Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador on July 6, called the family the “nearest hospital, the first school for the young, the best home for the elderly and a refuge where “no one is rejected. The family constitutes the best ‘social capital.’ It cannot be replaced by other institutions. It needs to be helped and strengthened.” ∎ In Washington, besides meeting President Obama and speaking to Congress, the Pope canonized Father Junipero Serra, the great Franciscan missionary who worked so valiantly in Mexico and

(From The Pastor’s Desk continued)

California, calling him “the embodiment of ‘a church which goes forth’” and beautifully noting that “Mission is never the fruit of a perfectly planned program or a well-organized manual. Mission is always the fruit of a life which knows what is to be found and healed, encountered and forgiven.” ∎ In New York, Pope Francis spoke at the United Nations, celebrated Mass at Madison Square Garden, visited Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Harlem, rode through an enormous crowd in Central Park, and prayed at the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum, where he contemplated a plaque with a powerful quotation from the ancient Roman writer Virgil: “No day shall erase you from the memory of time.” He also visited newly restored and refurbished St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Entering it, the Pope noticed some water bottles lying nearby. When someone told him the reason for this was probably that the cathedral had no public restroom facilities, Francis said, “You mean this beautiful cathedral doesn’t have a bathroom? Was it built for angels or human beings?” ∎ In his homily at Philadelphia’s Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Pope Francis took note of a saint with roots in the city, Katharine Drexel, who worked extensively with American Indians. He pointed out that she began her apostolate after discussing her attraction to missionary work with Pope Leo XIII, who asked her to answer the question, “What about you?” Pope Francis challenged Philadelphians, especially young ones, with the same words. And when the Pope spoke at the closing Mass of his visit, he turned again to the importance of the Gospel message, emphasizing his great concern for it by saying that “God wants all of his children to take part in the feast of the Gospel.” ∎ Pope Francis also delightfully announced that Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta would be raised to sainthood in 2016. It will be a celebration much to be treasured.

EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

On the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, we meditate on what it means to "find" Jesus. For some of us, this means remembering a conversion experience, but for others it means imagining what life would be like without him, and then rejoicing in the fact that he is tru-ly with us. No matter how we found the Lord, we too should fall down on our knees in adoration and offer him the precious treasures of our lives: our fervent devotion and our will to serve him. © LPi
