FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ APRIL 22, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

ANOINTING OF THE SICK, MASS, ROSARY & LUNCHEON

—SATURDAY, APRIL 28 Every year our Social Concerns Committee hosts a special Mass for individuals who are handicapped and have a difficult time getting to Mass or social events. The Mass this year is open to ALL PARISHIONERS and will include Anointing of the Sick. The Mass is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 at 12:00 noon in the Gym, followed by recitation of the Rosary and a luncheon. All facilities used are accessible. If you would like to attend, please let us know so that we can prepare for the luncheon. Please contact Flor Alto at 201-265-1254 or Joan Murray at 201-265-5823.

The great theologian Romano Guardini once wrote a brief book called Meditations Before Mass (Sophia Institute Press, 1993), a volume

to help the average Catholic better appreciate the greatest sacrament. In his chapter “The Holy Place” he explained why the church is God’s house and a holy place:

First, because the bishop by the power of his office has freed her from the usual bonds with the world of men and nature, from the uses and ends of daily existence, and dedicated her to God. Thus she becomes His own, and expression of His divine reserve, an image of His holiness, a reminder of His power. But this is only preparatory. In the deepest sense of the word, she is sanctified through the celebration of the Lord’s memorial. In transubstantiation He Himself descends and is present in a unique form. With His all-rescuing love and the essence of His salutary death, He stops for a time in the midst of the congregation. In Communion He offers Himself as food and drink; then He departs. Again and again it happens—the Passover of the Lord. Church is the room in which this coming, lingering, and departure occur. If we are anxious to collect ourselves and to overcome inertia, we do well to remember that this is the holy place that He is about to enter.

Guardini’s thoughts are a convincing reminder of the importance of how we settle in for Sunday Mass. If we take even a few short moments to gather our thoughts in prayerful preparation after we arrive at church each week, we are sure to achieve a heightened awareness of the power and importance of what we are here to do with Christ. If you would like to read more of Guardini’s reflections, Catholic booksellers may well have a copy of the book, even thugh it is not listed in the publisher’s current catalog. The entire text is also available online at www.cin.org/mbm.html

Msgr. David Hubba

You will want to reserve the next three evenings (Mon., Apr. 23 through Wed., Apr. 25) for a very special Parish Mission here at Saint Joseph with Fr. Jerome Cudden (see above). Fr. Jerome’s talks promise to be fascinating. He will speak about the Three Stages of Christian Life, touching on the Book of Genesis and Creation, the theological virtues by which we all should live, and the last things (death and judgment).

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL

—APRIL 28-29

Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal.

Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this ap-peal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions

OUR MISSION SPEAKER FR. JEROME CUDDEN

Growing up, Saint Joseph Church was Fr. Jerome Cudden’s parish, where he was known as Brendan Cudden. At Saint Joseph, Fr. Jerome attended Mass, Sunday school and received his Confirmation. After college, Fr. Jerome moved to

Arizona and was introduced to the Dominicans at Arizona State University in Tempe. It was there he received his calling to the priesthood, entered the novitiate for the Dominican Order in 1999 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2007. During his studies, Fr. Jerome earned master’s degrees in Theology and Divinity. Since his ordination, Fr. Jerome has served in campus ministry at the University of Arizona, Tucson and parish ministry at St. Dominic’s Church in Los Angeles. Fr. Jerome is currently the pastor of St. Dominic’s Church in Benicia, California, which is in the San Francisco Bay Area.

JOIN FR. JEROME on APRIL 23-24-25 at Saint Joseph for “THE THREE STAGES OF CHRISTIAN LIFE.”

EARTH DAY MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS

"The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change. The Creator does not abandon us; he

never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home. Here I want to recognize, encourage, and thank all those striving in countless ways to guarantee the protection of the home which we share. Particular appreciation is owed to those who tirelessly seek to resolve the tragic effects of environmental degradation on the lives of the world's poorest.”

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep...and they will heed my voice.” JOHN 10: 14-16

When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for the things that you want? Do you ever ask Him what He wants from you? How do you listen for His response? Usually, the answer is in “quiet whispers,” so take time every day, in silence, to actively listen for His response.
