FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 21, 2014

On Christmas Eve of 1902 Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, the future Pope Saint John XXIII, then

a 21-year-old seminarian pursuing his studies for the priesthood at Rome’s San Apollinare Institute, wrote the following words into the journal he kept. I hope they will help you to prepare yourselves spiritually for Christmas.

Night has fallen; the clear bright stars are sparkling in the cold air; noisy strident voices of the revelers of this world who celebrate with their merrymaking the poverty of their Savior. Around me in their rooms my companions are asleep, and I am still wakeful, thinking of the mystery of Bethlehem. Come, come Jesus, I await you. Mary and Joseph, knowing the hour is near, are turned away by the townsfolk and go out into the fields to look for a shelter. I am a poor shepherd, I have only a wretched stable, a small manger, some wisps of straw. I offer all these to you, be pleased to come into my poor hovel. Make haste, O Jesus, I offer you my heart; my soul is poor and bare of virtues, the straws of so many imperfections will prick you and make you weep—but O my Lord what can you expect? This little is all I have, I am touched by your poverty, I am moved to tears, but I have nothing better to offer you. … Jesus, I am here waiting for your coming. Wicked men have driven you out and the wind is like ice. Come into my heart. I am a poor man but I will warm you as well as I can. At least be pleased that I wish to welcome you warmly, to love you dearly, and sacrifice myself for you. … You are a flame of charity and you will purge my heart of all that is not your own most holy Heart. You … will fill me with those graces which give new life to my soul. O Jesus, come, I have so much to tell you, so many sorrows to confide, so many desires, so many promises, so many hopes. … I will lie down to rest here, in the fresh night air. As soon as you come the splendor of your light will dazzle my eyes. Your angels will awaken me with sweet hymns of glory and peace and I shall run forward with joy to welcome you and to offer you my own poor gifts, … all the little I have. I will worship you and show you all my love, with the other shepherds who have joined me and with the angels of heaven, singing hymns of glory to your Sacred Heart. Come, I am longing for you.

I join all the staff of Saint Joseph Parish in wishing for each of you a most blessed Christmas. May all the joys of this beautiful season be yours in abundance. We look forward to seeing you at our Christmas Masses. (The schedule appears opposite.) Msgr. David Hubba

CHRISTMAS 2014 SCHEDULE

Christmas Day Masses Thursday, December 25

Thursday, January 1, 2015 (New Year’s Day) 8:30 am; 10:30 am; 12:30 pm

All Masses are in Upper Church unless otherwise indicated.

"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Mary chose to cooperate with God. She didn't completely understand how his plan was going to unfold. She couldn't have known exactly what it all meant for her future. But she chose to offer herself to God's service nonetheless. And thanks to that gener-osity, the first Christmas happened nine months later.

Mary gives us a powerful example of saying yes to God. For her, the divine plan was revealed through the visit of the angel Gabriel. For us, it is usually revealed in less dramatic ways. We hear God's voice through the readings at Mass,

through the homily, through the wise counsel of a trusted friend, through a spiritual book, through an inspirational speaker, or just in the prayerful silence of our own hearts. Regardless of how God speaks to us, we are in a similar situation to Mary's. We are faced with the choice either to accept God's will in our lives, saying yes as Mary did, or to say no and choose a different path. It may be tempting to stick to more familiar ground or to avoid the challenge of surrendering our plans to God. But just look what happened when Mary decided to let God lead: the greatest miracle in all of history! God became man because of a faithful woman. And God wants to work miracles through us too. Every time we cooperate with his will, he transforms us into more loving, more generous people. As we round the corner toward Christmas this week, may we embrace God's will in our lives with the same joy and openness that ultimately allowed Mary to embrace the infant Jesus in her arms on Christmas Day.

WHY DO WE GIVE GIFTS AT CHRISTMAS?

Great events in and of themselves are not tangible. They occur in life but leave no mark behind, nothing that someone could

come across and know that something significant occurred. So we mark the event with monuments, holidays, gold watches or plaques, making a meaningful event tangible and memorable. Gifts at Christmas do the same thing. They mark the occasion of the birth of Jesus, communicating a bit of the joy of the day by allowing us to be both giver and receiver. Gift-giving sets aside the day as special and different. The special foods, customs, decorations and gifts all help focus our attention on the importance and meaning of the day and at the same time allow us to share personally in its joy and happiness. In giving gifts, though, we can share in the meaning of Christmas in a significant way. We imitate God in sharing with others. We give a bit of ourselves to others in the gifts we give, just as God gives us the gift of his Son. No wonder we often say that the best gifts are those that come from the heart. Given in love, these presents are wrapped in the best covering of all. ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc.

PLEASE DON’T FORGET SAINT JOSEPH

Is Saint Joseph Parish on your gift list? Our parish depends upon your financial support, especially at Christmas, to meet its larger expenses. We have a great parish! To continue to do all the good things we do, we need your help. Please be generous in the Christmas collection. Thank you!
