Announcing the formation of a local Latin speaking group
If you would like to cultivate your Latin skills in a Catholic context, a new group is forming that can help. In weekly one-hour meetings this Latin chat table will enable participants to immerse themselves in the language of the Church through hearing, speaking, and reading Latin, without fear of making mistakes! We will have conversation in Latin and discuss a variety of texts, including those of Church Fathers, popes, Doctors, and Saints. To sign up or find out more about this new activity please contact Charlie Blume at [email protected].
In Gratitudine Monsignor Giles Wach, Founder and Prior General of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, is very thankful for the warm hospitality and the work put into the Mass and reception for the Feast of the Ascension. He looks forward to future visits to Pitts-burgh.
Annual Priests’ Retreat This week Canon Avis and Canon O’Connor will be on retreat in St. Louis, Mo. They leave Sunday after-noon and return Friday evening. Father Fred Gruber and Father Dolan will be helping out during their ab-sence with Confessions and Mass. The canons are grateful for their assistance.
Wisdom of St. Francis de Sales
Charity spreads delight throughout the soul, which is rendered beauti-ful, pleasing and lovable by God's goodness. If the soul were a king-dom where the Holy Spirit is kind, charity would be its queen... and if the soul were a queen, a spouse of Heaven's great King, then charity
would be the crown of royalty adorning her head; if the soul, together with the body, were a little world, then charity would be the sun giving it light, warmth and life.
On Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Pope Pius XI, Miserentissimus Redemptor
And truly the spirit of expiation or reparation has always had the first and foremost place in the worship given to the Most Sa-cred Heart of Jesus, and nothing is more in keeping with the origin, the character, the power, and the dis-tinctive practices of this form of devotion, as appears from the record of history and custom, as well as from the sacred liturgy and the acts of the
Sovereign Pontiffs. For when Christ manifested Him-self to Margaret Mary, and declared to her the infini-tude of His love, at the same time, in the manner of a mourner, He complained that so many and such great injuries were done to Him by ungrateful men — and we would that these words in which He made this complaint were fixed in the minds of the faithful, and were never blotted out by oblivion: “Behold this Heart” — He said — “which has loved men so much and has loaded them with all benefits, and for this boundless love has had no return but neglect, and contumely, and this often from those who were bound by a debt and duty of a more special love.” In order that these faults might be washed away, He then rec-ommended several things to be done, and in particu-lar the following as most pleasing to Himself, namely that men should approach the Altar with this purpose of expiating sin, making what is called a Communion of Reparation*, — and that they should likewise make expiatory supplications and prayers, prolonged for a whole hour, – which is rightly called the “Holy Hour.” These pious exercises have been approved by the Church and have also been enriched with copious indulgences. * The Communion of Reparation, commonly done on the first Friday of the month, but could also be done at anytime, consists in receiving Holy Communion (in the state of grace, of course) with the intention of making reparation for the sins committed against Our Lord in the most Blessed Sacrament. These sins include irreverence in church, sacrilegious commun-ions, profanation of the Blessed Sacrament, and ne-glect of this Sacrament.
A Prayer to the Sacred Heart O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every bless-ing, I adore Thee, I love Thee, and with a lively sor-row for my sins, I offer Thee this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to Thy will. Grant, good Jesus, that I may live in Thee and for Thee. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, Thy blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen. —Raccolta, nº 263
