The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Baruch 5:1-9 Baruch tells Jerusalem to rejoice because of God's plan to bring his exiled people back to Jerusalem. He emphasizes God's power and describes his plan to lower mountains and fill gorges to make their journey easier.

Second Reading: Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11 Paul encourages the Philippians to love each other completely. He hopes that their love and understanding will continue to grow so that they are prepared for the return of Christ.

Gospel: Luke 3:1-6 Luke describes the work John the Baptist carried out to help people prepare for the birth of Jesus. Luke also discusses who was in power at the time, which helped historians to figure out the exact dates of certain events, including Jesus' birth.

St. John’s Family Page

The word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. Our gospel begins with a list of the political and religious leaders of Jesus’s day. The Word of God did not come to these powerful leaders. The Word of God did not come to the large cities or population centers either. Rather, the Word came to the humble John the Baptist in the desert. Only the people who went into the desert heard the message from God’s prophet, John the Baptist. The season of Advent invites us to not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Advent is about following the message of St. John the Baptist – to turn away from sin. In Lk3:8, a few verses after today’s gospel, John the Baptist tells us: “Do those things that will show that you have turned away from sins.” Advent is an invitation to conversion. St. Paul reminds us that conversion is a journey. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. We began Advent last week focusing on the second coming of Jesus and this week shifted to the messenger, John the Baptist who prepares the way for the coming of Jesus for the people of his day. Jesus comes to us at each Mass, through the Sacred Scriptures and in the most Holy Eucharist. How prepared are we to meet Jesus in the Word and Sacrament? How prepared are we to meet Jesus when he comes to us in the least of

our brothers and sisters? We entrust our preparation to Mary, the Mother of God – may she lead always closer to Jesus! May God bless us all always! Deacon Mike

Bereavement Group There is a support group for those grieving the death of a loved one here at St. John the Apostle. The group provides a Christ-centered experience for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The group offers a caring, compassionate, confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. If you are interested in joining us, or if you would like more information about the group, contact Deacon Mike at 732-388-1253 or [email protected]. All calls are confidential. Pre-registration is required.

Children’s Liturgy

The Children’s Liturgy will be held at the 10:30 AM Mass. Families with children should just come to Mass as you normally do. Children will have their own Liturgy of the Word, including a special teaching just for them! Volunteer teachers are needed. If interested, please contact Deacon Mike: [email protected] 732-388-1253 Do you want to learn about the Bible? Examine the four pillars of our Catholic Catechism: faith, morality, prayer and the sacraments through the Scriptures. St. John the Apostle’s Frank Tremmel will be instructing the session, providing us with an overview to help us know and experience the power of Word of God. The next session on January 8th will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the teacher’s lounge. Attendance will also qualify towards the Doctrinal portion of Catechist Certification. Contact Deacon Mike to register or for more information, 732-388-1253 or [email protected]
