Our Staff… here to serve you! Call us at 978-251-8571

The scriptures constantly

remind us of the continual and

personal love of God towards each one of us. On this third Sunday

of Lent, the church invites us to enter into this love of God and

respond to him positively. God himself initiates the move in every

person to bring them closer to him through the gift of the Holy

Spirit. One of the recurring themes throughout the Lenten season

is the compassion and mercy of our God that conveys his love.

Repentance on the part of human person indicates the recognition

of this love and his readiness to make reparations. This requires a

spirit of sincerity, a sense of honesty to self and recognition of our

nothingness before God. Once a person has accepted this change,

God has a ready mission prepared for him to continue to spread his

love.

In the Gospel of today, Jesus encounters the Samaritan woman at

the well and gives her the living water. With this, she and the

people of the place are able to

trust and accept the eternal life

he gives them. They recognize

him as the messiah, the savior of

the world. In the first reading,

from the Book of Exodus, we hear

of God giving the people of Israel

the water they need to quench

the thirst. Moses was commanded by God to take the elders with

him and to strike the rock with the staff. Then, miraculously, water

came out of the rock. Paul, in the second reading, tells us that faith,

hope and love are God’s gifts to us. We are all God’s chosen people

called upon to live purified lives and God’s love was poured into

our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit that has been given to us

through Christ. Thus today’s readings are directing us to take a

good look into ourselves and experience the divine insight.

Holy Thursday Liturgy “The Washing of the Feet”

Walking in sandals on the filthy roads of Palestine in the

first century made it imperative that feet be washed before

a communal meal, especially since people reclined at a low

table and feet were very much in evidence. When Jesus rose

from the table and began to wash the feet of the disciples,

He was doing the work of the lowliest of servants. The

humility expressed by His act with towel and basin

foreshadowed His ultimate act of humility and love on the

cross. As Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He told them

(and us) “I have given you an example, that you should do

as I have done to you.” As His followers, we are to emulate

Him, serving one another in lowliness of heart and mind,

seeking to build one another up in humility and love.

We are in need of people to have their feet washed at this Liturgical celebration. Won’t you help us in celebrating this pivotal lesson of our faith? If you are interested, contact Paul at [email protected].

from St. Joseph Parish, Nashua, NH

Join us in reflection of Jesus’ suffering from Gethsemane to the Cross through spoken word, images, prayer & song. It will offer each of us the opportunity to rediscover the

presence of Christ in our lives.

Performance Scheduled Here at St. John’s on

Sunday, April 6th, 2014 at 7:00 PM

Free Will Offering accepted.

Have you ever wondered... ...how we got connected to Our Lady Star of

the Sea in Sierra Leone, West Africa?

In 1961 Sierra Leone, a British colony, became an

independent nation. In 1991, after struggling to establish

itself as a government, a group called the Revolutionary

United Front attacked villages on the eastern Liberian

border and started illegal mining for diamonds, driving the

villagers out of their homes. Fierce fighting and brutal

maiming of men, women and children continued until

2002, when this civil war was declared officially over.

Amidst this struggle, the parish of Our Lady Star of the Sea

was established in Juba, a suburb of Freetown, with our

own Rosaline and Patrick Willie-Bonglo being founding

members of the parish. In 2004, being keenly aware of the

extreme sufferings of the people served by this parish,

through its schools, medical clinic and vocational training

school, the Willie-Bonglos asked if St John’s would sponsor

the needs of this Catholic parish. With Archdiocesan

approval, we were connected. This connection flourished

under Fr. Ritt’s pastorship, especially through the work of

the Saint Vincent de Paul Society of our parish.

Since then, we have collected and sent financial aid, as well

as material supplies to help the work of our sister parish.

In 2010, a representative of St John’s was invited and vis-

ited Our Lady Star of the Sea parish to strengthen the bond

between the two parishes, and to witness the good works

being done there with the aid we had sent. After that visit,

pictures were shared of Our Lady Star of the Sea’s

compound, showing their facilities and parishioners at all

the Masses. Many of St John’s parishioners were brought

into a closer bond with Our Lady, having seen the needs, as

well as the joyful faith of these people. We continue our

support in the unity of the One Body of Christ.
