Children’s Liturgy of the Word

On the first Sunday of every month, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass, children (ages 4 to grade level 2) are invited to participate in the Liturgy of the Word. During the Mass, the children will be escorted to the basement of the Church after the Opening Prayer. Here they will sing, hear the Sunday’s reading on their own level and share a reflection. They will be returned to their families during the Final Blessing of the Mass.

Please join us for the Children’s Liturgy on Sunday, February 5th

Fortune tellers, palmistry, cards, bones, coconuts, chicken entrails to foretell the future are all forbidden by the bible (Deut 18:9-14). The sacred writer calls them an “abomination to the Lord.” (Deut 9:12). It’s also false; tricks to fool the gullible and simple minded. It’s the same with reincarnation. Nobody was ever a slave or a sharecropper or a homeless person, even though they outnumbered the noble born by the millions. No, one is always told that one was Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, Scipio Africanus or Ivar the Boneless. It’s always somebody famous, never Joe the Lazy or Clotilde the Busybody. St Anthony the Abbot was one of the first and greatest of the Desert Fathers from the third century. This is one story told about him. “When Abba Anthony thought about the depth of the judgments of God, he asked, ‘Lord, how is it that some die when they are young, while others drag on to extreme old age? Why are there those who are poor and those who are rich? Why do wicked men proper and why are the just in need?’ He heard a voice answering him, ‘Anthony, keep your attention on yourself; these things are according to the judgment of God, and it is not to your advantage to known anything about them.” In other words, God told him, “Anthony, mind your own business.” That is what St Paul urges us to do in today’s readings, “Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.” Zephaniah, the prophet, urges us to seek justice and seek humility. “Maybe, just maybe,” he says, “God will be merciful to you.” It’s better to mind one’s own business and follow the Beatitudes. In other words helping people without trying to control them but leading them to God by good example, by kindness and a good and happy heart.

couples (no group discussions) with six follow-up sessions.

The next program begins the weekend of February 10th—12th, 2017. All inquiries are confidential. For further information please call the Family Life Office 732-243-4573, Rich & Annette Colasuonno 732-236-0671 or Tom & Pat McTague 732-583-4468 evenings.
