The Sanctuary Candle that will be lit this week during our Eucharistic Celebration is in memory of Miguel A. Fragoso. This is a gift from Joan Schurmann.

In today's readings the people complain against Moses and God. They would rather be in slavery where they had meat to eat and now in the desert they had nothing. So the Lord sent them quail and manna, the bread “that fell from heaven.” They didn’t want to be vegans, that is why God sent the quail. Recently I was reading about a terrible allergy to meat. It’s very interesting medically. It turns out that humans and other primates from Africa and Asia do not have a small sugar molecule in their flesh that all other mammals have. It’s called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose. The problem is that if one becomes sensitized to this small sugar molecule, one becomes allergic to meat. Some have severe allergy covered in hives or more severe manifestations. As one parishioner told me, “It sounds like a vegan plot!” It seems that Lone Star ticks from the Southeastern US can inject this alpha-gal molecule and cause the person to become sensitive to beef, goat, lamb, pork or any other mammal meat. The good news is that it seems to require multiple tick bites. So if you visit the Southeast make sure you take tick repellent with you. Otherwise you may be reduced to eating manna and quail, like our ancestors in the faith. In the Gospel Jesus tells us He is the bread of life. The nourishment he gives us is of His Body and Blood, “the bread that gives life to the world.” The Vatican II Council documents tell us that the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of the spiritual life. And so Holy Mass is the place where we come to get this bread of life. At Holy Mass we are replenished, renewed and refreshed by the Body and Blood of Jesus himself. In the next few weeks let’s look at the Holy Mass so we can better understand and better participate.

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of Edward Sowa. This is a gift from his sister, Annette.
