Dear Parishioners of St. Gregory the Great,
It is hard to believe that it has been some three years in which I have been privileged to assist you at Mass as your Celebrant. These last ten weeks of social distancing have had their challenges for each of us, but God’s love is al-ways there. This love, as you know, is centered in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus will sustain us now and throughout this COVID-19 pandemic.
My Mother and I remember you and your loved ones at daily Mass here at home. She is doing fine but misses seeing so many of you at Mass and other church activities. Now that public Mass will soon resume, I have made the de-cision that I will retire in order that I not jeopardize the health and welfare of my Mother. Without a vaccine for this virus, as her primary caregiver, it is critical I minimize unnecessary exposures. Weddings, funerals, and other spe-cial occasions will have to be carefully planned if I am asked to be the Cele-brant.
I will continue to be President/Spiritual Moderator for (OFNO) Outreach For Nazareth Orphanage as we go forward. The Board at OFNO understands my limitations and we are actively working on plans for Nazareth Orphanage which will be dependent on the course of this virus in the future. OFNO has offered the good people of St. Gregory the Great wonderful op-portunities to witness to the Gospel (Matthew 25) over these many years. We will continue to do so as we pray for the health and welfare of the Sisters and children at the orphanage. Deborah Sampson, an OFNO Board Member is our POC for all questions and concerns at St. Gregory the Great. Both Debo-rah and I can be contacted at: www.ofno.org
The Eucharist is the center of our Catholic faith. Thank you again for the privilege of allowing me to be the Presider over so many beautiful liturgies with you. Braking open the Word, with such attentive minds and hearts sitting in the pews, challenged me weekly to let the Holy Spirit speak loudly.
My Mother and I are still living in Carlsbad and look forward to seeing you when the opportunities present themselves.
God bless you all, Father Brian F. Kelly, Ph.D.

The Blessing of the Community
I have been blessed to be a member of my parish community for 28 years. For much of that time I was serving as a member of the parish staff, but it was still the community that I call home. I have been fortunate to be able to remain in that parish even as my life has encountered new chapters and callings. I am so grateful to God that I have been able to grow, be nourished, and find companionship in a parish for this long of a time.
It is a natural tendency for human beings to desire belonging to something bigger than themselves. Not everyone is fortunate enough to find the community, big or small, that fulfills that need. Unfortunately, that means that many communities suffer from not having the benefit of the gifts, skills, and talents that any member can offer. Communities are in many ways living organisms that move and breathe based upon the individuals who form that body. A community is truly the sum of its parts.
Your parish community reflects you and everyone else in that community. The more each member gives to the community, the stronger that community finds itself. If you hold back, your community suffers, and you gain little. I know firsthand what being a part of a community can mean to a person. I would be no one at all – and you would not be reading this – if it weren’t for the life I have had in my parish community.

3 NEW ON-LINE
CHOICES! CHOICE 1
Romans: The Gospel of Salvation Sept 14th thru Oct 26th from 7-9pm Who was Paul? How did this zealous
persecutor of Christians come to believe in the Good News of Jesus Christ?
Why did Paul write this letter to the Romans? What do we need to keep in mind to understand the mes-
sage Paul wants to share with us?
CHOICE 2 The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation Sept 14th thru Jan 25, 2021 from 10-12pm
The Bible Timeline is a guided study of the twelve periods of Bible history divided in twenty three sessions that involve Bible Study reading and
study, small on-line group discussion and a 50 mi-nute video lecture with each session. This is an all encompassing study that takes you through all the
major periods in the Bible from creation to the formation of the Early Church.
CHOICE 3 Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance
Sept 15th thru Oct 26th from 10-12pm St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians reveals many
remarkable gifts that we as Christians are given in the Church. The letter tells about the nature of
this Church-as a body, as a household, as a mystery, as a communion, as a bride, and as an
army. It shows us the great inheritance that awaits us as adopted sons and daughters in the
family of God, and it reveals how God's great love for us can transform our lives.
To sign up or find out more about these studies, please contact Dennis Poirier at: 858-243-2455 [email protected]
