THE WIND AND THE SEA

Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for grant-ed.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimo-nies to what the lake can do.

The readings of this Sunday evoke our memo-ries of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of wa-ter subject to sudden storms and churned into dan-gerous waves by terrible winds.

But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Mak-er of wind and sea. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica is hosting a

fundraising concert fea-turing the Northwest Boys Choir of Seattle on July 12, 2015. Funds from the event will be used to

restore the historic stained glass windows of the Basilica. These windows date from the late 19th center; the majori-ty of them were fabricated in Bavaria and are irreplacea-ble. While necessary repairs were made at the time of

the Cathedral renovation, they have never been fully re-stored. Major restoration of the windows is necessary to

preserve them for future generations.

The Northwest Boys Choir performs regularly with the Seattle Symphony and travels extensively through the

United States. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. preceded at 6:00 p.m. by a VIP reception in the cathedral rectory.

Tickets for this event are available on-line (https://www.evenbrite.com/e/san-jose-cathedral-foundation-windows-of-hope-fundraiser-tickets-16720225645) or

through the parish office (408) 283-8100.

We have a unique opportunity to participate in preserving a significant piece of our Catholic heritage in Downtown

San Jose.

Special Collection / Next Week The Peter’s Pence Collection unites us in solidarity with Pope Francis and his works of charity toward those in need. In his address of March 20, 2013, Pope Francis spoke of our responsibility before the world and creation. “There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, pro-mote reconciliation and build peace,” he said. Your con-tributions to the Peter’s Pence Collection allow our Holy Father to support victims of war and natural disasters and others most in need of assistance. Join Pope Fran-cis and be a witness of charity in the world.

Want to learn more about becoming a fully initi-ated Catholic?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is an oppor-tunity of education and spiritual formation for those seeking to complete their initiation into the Catholic Christian faith through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. Christian Initiation is a beautiful process that merges the work already begun in you with the life of the Church. The sessions begin September 15th with an informal inquiry period; Tuesday nights from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center living. Please contact the parish office (408-879-1122) to sign up or for further information.

It’s only when you grow up and step back from him–or leave him for your own home–it’s only then that you can measure his greatness and

fully appreciate it. — Margaret Truman

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

All this week the excitement is in the air as we celebrate the 20th Annual Diocese Youth Retreat up at the Zephyr Cover Retreat Center, overlooking Lake Tahoe. I ask that everyone please pray for our 10 high school teens, and two leaders as we join over 215 teens from other parishes for an incredible experi-ence. The theme this year is called “The Hub - Be The Device” and the Scripture is from John 15:5 “I am the Vine, you are the Branches”.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

For fathers who struggle:

May the love of Jesus inspire them

to love their children unconditionally;

We pray to the Lord:

“There is nothing more powerful than prayer and fasting in the battle for true justice in our country. It is the hope of the bishops that these efforts will encourage real soli-

darity among all people who are standing for the pre-cious gifts of life, marriage and religious liberty.”

— Most Reverend Michael J. Sheridan, Bishop of Colo-rado Springs, “The Bishop’s Voice: A Battle for True Jus-

tice,” The Colorado Catholic Herald, January 18, 2013
