Virtue of June- Obedience Obedience is a penance of the soul, and for that reason a sacrifice more acceptable than all corporal penances. Thence it happens that God loves more the least degree of obedience in thee, than all the other services thou mayest think to render Him. ----St. John of the Cross

A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar
Like the disciples in today’s gospel, there are times we shut the
doors of our hearts to people or events. It’s how we create
emotional distance. Permanent distancing is lethal and prevents
the PEACE Jesus offers you today.

The bible gives us many examples of Jesus Christ’s mission to
forgive our sins. When a paralyzed man was lowered through
the roof of a house to be placed at his feet, Jesus forgave the
man’s sins and cured him of his affliction. When a sinful woman
knelt at his feet in the house of Simon, Jesus forgave her sins
because she had loved much. Jesus’ story of the prodigal son
gives us the meaning of his ministry which is to forgive sins,
reconcile us to God and lead us on the road to our true happiness
in heaven. On top of all this Jesus gives us additional help. He
sends us the Holy Spirit who will remind of all he taught us and
inspire us to follow the truth.
What is this truth? It is that God has created us and loves
us…and we are called to love him in return. We do this in the
worship and glory we give to him and in the love we give to each
other. On this feast of Pentecost we are given the fruits of the
Holy Spirit…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…to help us on the way.
We are also given our Blessed Mother Mary and the saints to
encourage and walk with us.
This last day of May is great day to consider our love for others.
Along with Pentecost, it is also a feast day of Mary’s Visitation
to Elizabeth. Mary, having learned about Elizabeth’s pregnancy
is moved by her love and hurries to land a hand. No one has
asked her to go. God didn’t ask her. Her angel didn’t ask her.
Even Elizabeth never made the request. Pregnant Mary could
easily have remained home preparing for her own birth. But she
sets out with haste and goes to offer her assistance. It is easy to
imagine the great joy that filled the heart of Mary and her desire
to share it. “Behold your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age
has also conceived a son,” her angel told her. After her long
journey, Mary enters Zachary’s house and greets her cousin.
When she heard, “the baby leaped in her womb and Elizabeth
was filled with the Holy Spirit.” That house was transformed by
the presence of Jesus and Mary. This wonderful effect is worked
by Jesus through Mary. We are called to do the same. This
event, which we contemplate in the second decade of the Joyful
mysteries of the Rosary, invites us to give ourselves promptly,
happily and unpretentiously to the people around us. Very often
the best service we can offer is simply to share with them the
happiness that fills our hearts. But we can only do this if we stay
very close to our Lord.
Do we bring Christ with us, and with him joy, where ever we go,
be it to work, or when visiting friends or with someone who is
sick? Does our presence cause people to be cheered up?
May God bless you!
Fr. Tom
