From Our Pastor:From Our Pastor:In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus Christ tells His disciples that those who follow Him

should expect to suffer terrible persecutions and that this will lead to something great: “It will lead to your giving testimony” (Luke 21:5-19) Our ability to give testimony to the love and mercy of God, to speak a word of wisdom that Jesus will give us (which we do not prepare beforehand and leaves our adversaries powerless to resist), is an irrefutable sign of the authority and majesty of Jesus Christ For, as we hear in the first reading, “the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble” (Malachi 3:19) The words of God’s wisdom are what turn the wicked to stubble – and for those who fear God’s Name, “there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays” (Malachi 3:20) Christ calls us, His disciples, to take very seriously His providential care of us: “You will be hated by all because of my Name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed By your perseverance you will secure your lives” (Luke 21:19)

Where do we get the strength and courage to persevere, to endure persecution, to testify to the love and mercy of God? From God Himself: by His grace, with the gifts of His Spirit, through prayer, His Church, Word, Sacraments and communion of saints In the words of Pope Pius XII, may we hear how the Holy Spirit speaks to us: Undoubtedly, we accomplish all through the grace of God, the strength that God gives us, through the faith, hope and love that He has infused into our soul, through the divine love that burns within us, and through constant prayer by which we are closely united with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, from Whom we humbly ask and obtain whatever our human weakness cannot obtain As brothers and sisters in Christ, in the face of endless cares and anxieties of life, may we never let anything turn us aside from striving and aiming to please God and to work for His glory for which nothing, aided by God’s grace, seems too laborious, or difficult, or beyond human strength (Pope Pius XII, homily, July 7, 1946, Canonization Mass of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first US citizen to be declared a saint, memorial November 13) By God’s grace, may we continue to witness to and be instruments of God’s mercy and love, testifying in word and deed to the faith, hope and love that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit has entrusted to us May we be evermore aware of following Jesus Christ, the Only Savior of the world, and may He bring us all to life eternal in Heaven

With peace and prayers in Christ,Fr. William

SAINT CLEMENT SCHOOL

IN MEMORIAMPlease remember in your prayers Mary Ann Carroll of our parish

who died on November 9th, and whose funeral Mass is being offered this Wednesday, November 20 Mary Ann’s life was very intertwined with that of our parish and her family, as she was the housekeeper and cook for Fr Felix Hoffman in her younger years Fr Felix encouraged her musical inclinations, and she later became one of our parish’s prominent song leaders at the weekend Masses, for marriages, funerals and other events, which spanned many decades Mary Ann married Roger Carroll on February 14, 1952, St Valentine’s Day, which was so appropriate as their love was truly a beautiful one, a love centered on God, one another and on their family Together they raised 10 children, with their home filled with the aroma of her fine cooking and baking Mary Ann was definitely a woman of deep faith, hope and abiding love As we pray for her, may we also hold in prayer her children – Colleen, Joan, Mary Jean, Jerry, Barb, Tom, Ann, Nancy, Joe and Paula, along with her sons-and-daughters-in-law, and all of her dear family and friends May the Holy Spirit bring them comfort and consolation in this time of sadness and sorrow

“Eternal rest grant unto Mary Ann, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through

the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

ADULT EDUCATIONIn an age where faith in Jesus Christ is questioned, it was not so

with the first Christians Many of the early followers of Jesus gave up their lives rather than to deny their faith Join us as we follow Steven Ray in “Apostolic Fathers: Handing on the Faith” This week we will look at the lives of St Polycarp, St Irenaeus and St Justin The Apostolic Fathers’ lives and writings give us a glimpse into Apostolic Tradition and the beliefs of the early Christian Church We will gather on Wednesday, November 20, in the parish meeting room after the 8:15 Mass This study, part of the “In the Footprints of God” series, can be found at FORMEDorg

Be sure to see next week’s bulletin about our Advent offering Tentatively note Monday, November 25, at 6:30 pm for an introductory session of “REJOICE: Advent Meditations with Joseph” See the bulletin of November 24 to confirm this and for more information

“The Perfect Christmas Gift:” The Women’s Care Center, Madison, continues to grow the number of clients it serves As such, the need for material assistance continues to grow Clients are able to earn and redeem coupons in order to purchase clothing items, baby food, car seats, etc Please consider helping by donating new clothing, specifically winter outfits and sleepers for boys and girls size 3 months to 5T Please call 608-241-8100 to arrange getting the items to the Center, or drop them off at 3711 Orin Rd in Madison

HAPPY FEAST OF ST. CLEMENT!Saturday, November 23, is the feast of our parish patron, Pope

St Clement I St Clement was the 3rd successor of St Peter, being martyred about the year 100 AD He was, in all likelihood, a companion of St Paul, and like him, St Clement wrote a letter to the church in Corinth in which he urges them to remain faithful to Christ, and to His Body, the Church The closing portion of his letter is a prayer of praise for God’s creation, God’s goodness and that we respond to Him with gratitude

“The earth, bearing fruit in fulfillment of His will at her proper seasons, gives forth food that supplies abundantly both men and beasts and all living things… The seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter give way to one another in succession in peace…Yes, the smallest of living things come together in concord and peace All these things the great Creator and Master of the universe ordered to be in peace, doing good unto all things, but far beyond to the rest of us who have taken refuge in His compassionate mercies through our Lord Jesus Christ…Seeing therefore that we have all these things from Him, we ought in all things to give thanks to Him, to whom be the glory and the majesty forever and ever Amen”

St. Clement, pray for us!
