The Presentation of the Lord (A)

St. Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two

FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ, This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In fulfillment of the Law of the Old Testament (see Numbers 18:15) the firstborn male child was to be redeemed and consecrated to the Lord. This is where the Gospel picks up in today’s readings. Mary and Joseph present their offer-ing on Jesus’ behalf and consecrate him to the Father. While in the Temple they are met by a good and holy man named Simeon. The Lord had revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he had seen the Anointed One. Upon seeing the baby Jesus, Simeon knows right away this Jesus is the Christ, God’s Holy One. He also knows how important this child is as is evident in the beautiful words he offers to the Father at the sight of Jesus. While holding Jesus in his arms he exclaims:

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word,

for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples:

a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”

Having seen and held Jesus he was ready for anything God had in store for him, even his departure from this earth. Here’s the really good part. You and I get to do more than hold the baby Jesus in our arms, we get to make him part of us at Holy Communion. How our hearts should sing God’s praises when we take the Eucharist! If, like Simeon, we are prepared to see Jesus, after a worthy reception of Holy Com-munion we are prepared for whatever God has in store for us, we can joyfully accept God’s will for us. Simeon’s prayer is one that we pray every night in the Church’s Night Prayer (also known as Compline). Could I ask you to join the Church and offer this prayer each night before going to bed? It’s a fitting prayer of trust and aban-donment to the will of God acknowledging that we have seen God’s salvation. Try it and see if your faith doesn’t grow stronger each time you pray it.
