Merici Chapel… May — the month of the Blessed

Mother — try and spend a few moments in the

chapel and say the Rosary before the Blessed

Sacrament. Thank our Lady for saying “yes” to be

the Mother of God and bringing us a Savior to

St. Charles Borromeo Church May 21, 2017

This weekend we congratulate the newly-ordained

Father James Michael Cosgrove. Father James and

his seven classmates were ordained last Friday evening

at St John Cathedral.

Our new priest, Father Cosgrove, is a graduate of

Trinity High School and the University of Dayton. He began his

theology studies six years ago at Cleveland’s St Mary Seminary

and during that time he served at St Anselm Parish in

Chesterland, All Saints School in Wickliffe, Holy Angels Parish

in Bainbridge, and Holy Family Parish in Stow.

Father Cosgrove is consistently friendly, outgoing, energetic,

and engaging. We will miss his smiling presence around

St Charles but I am sure that we will keep in touch. Father Jim’s

first priestly assignment is effective on Tuesday, June 13. He

will be the new “parochial vicar” (old style: “associate pastor”)

at:

Father James M Cosgrove

St Christopher Parish

20141 Detroit Road

Rocky River OH 44116 Father Cosgrove will be the principal celebrant and homilist

at a First Mass of Thanksgiving this Sunday, May 21, at

12:00Noon. A Reception and First Priestly Blessing will follow

Mass in the Corrigan Gym. All are invited to attend both the

Mass and the Reception.

St Charles Parish is truly blessed; this is our third priestly

ordination and First Mass in the last four years. I am sure that

there are many other young men “out there” being called to

discern a priestly vocation. If one of them is YOU, contact one

of our parish priests.

Next Sunday, May 28, at the 12:00Noon Mass, we will

celebrate Father Anselm Zupka OSB’s Fiftieth Anniversary of

Ordination to the Priesthood. A Reception will follow in the

Corrigan Gym. All parishioners are invited to both the Mass

and the Reception.

After his priestly ordination in 1967, Father Anselm was

assigned by the Abbot to serve as weekend assistant here at

St Charles. It was Msgr Nicholas Monaghan, the founding

pastor, who greeted his new weekend help. From the very

beginning, Father Anselm became an important part of the

St Charles story. Msgr Thomas Corrigan followed as pastor in

January 1968, after Msgr Monaghan’s death. I followed

Msgr Corrigan after his retirement in June of 1987.

Over the years, Father Anselm has touched the lives of many

parishioners with his sincere personality, evident faith, and

interesting homilies. Couples seek him out to witness their wed-

dings and families request him for the baptism of their children.

Father Anselm’s principal ministry is at Benedictine High

School: there he teaches German, has served as a counselor,

and also has handled the duties of Abbey Prior and manager of

the Monks’ Kitchen.

I can think of no priest in the Diocese of Cleveland who has

been saying Mass in the same parish, continuously, for a half-

century. Father Anselm is unique in that regard.

Father Anselm has been a fifty-year blessing to St Charles

and we are all proud to call him our friend. I look forward to

celebrating his Golden Anniversary next weekend and

I encourage you to join me.

Men’s Clothing Drive

belts; any items suitable for

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL This weekend, we will participate in a follow up to the in-pew commitment for Catholic Charities which had

taken place in February. This is not a special collection; rather, the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal

represents the chance for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in installments, to Catholic

Charities, Diocese of Cleveland in order to support its mission of a society that stands united in its support of

the “least among us.” All of the money raised from this weekend’s Appeal will provide help for the Hungry and Homeless, through

fundamental needs, such as food, hot meals, shower facilities, and clothing, as well as future needs through training and case

management programs.

All new, increased and additional gifts made in the in-pew envelopes available this weekend or donated online at

www.CatholicCommunity.org/challenge will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000. Donations this weekend may also be

designated to any of three regional sites that are most in need of support. Please consider a generous gift that will transform the

lives of the 400,000 who are served each year in Northeast Ohio. Please pray for the success of the appeal, which provides for

essential programs and services in need throughout all eight counties of the Diocese of Cleveland.

On behalf of the poor and needy of Northeast Ohio, thank you! We invite you to view the stories of inspiration and more infor-

mation at www.catholiccommunity.org/2017Appeal
