MONTH OF ALL SOULS – During the month of No-

vember we will especially remember the faithful departed

in our prayers and Masses. It is our tradition to give an

offering so that the faithful departed will be remembered at

all the Masses said during the month. Mass offering enve-

lopes can be found on the altar of Saint Joseph. Please

place your offering inside and write the names of the de-

parted on the envelope. Your envelope can be deposited in

the box located on the altar. The envelopes are later placed

on the altar and remain for the entire month as we pray for

those who have passed on to eternal life. You may also

write the names of the departed in the Book of the Dead

located on the Saint Joseph altar. On this altar are the

names of our newly departed parishioners who had died

since last All Souls Day. ETERNAL REST GRANT

UNTO THEM, O LORD!

ATTENTION MEN – A new men’s group called FA-

THERS OF ST. JOSEPH will be meeting every other Sat-

urday morning at 5:30 a.m. in the St. Cecilia Office Build-

ing. The sole aim and purpose of the group is to labor for

the restoration, revitalization and redemption of human

fatherhood, in order that it may become what it has been

created to be: an efficacious icon that directs the human

family to its Father. The Fathers of St. Joseph gatherings

are not so much meetings as they are mini retreats, whose

aim is to communicate the spirituality of fatherhood in a

manner that encourages and inspires fathers to embrace,

engage and – by the power of the Holy Spirit – sanctify

their vocation. Our next meeting is December 1st.

Each year, our third graders research an assigned saint and prepare a poster and presentation about that saint’s life. The third graders also coordinate and organize the All Saints’ Day Mass. This year’s class did an excellent job! Congratulations, third grade!

580-St. Cecilia

This great and renowned Saint was born in Pannonia (Hungary) about 317. The son of pagan parents, he early became a cate-chumen and served in the Roman army until, after he had given half his cloak to a beggar at Amiens, a vision of Christ (about 339) impelled him to Baptism and the religious life.

He was ordained an exorcist by St. Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers, and spent the ensuing years in various places, for some time leading the life of a hermit off the Italian coast. He had the happiness of converting his mother and also was flogged for of-fering public opposition to the Arians. Upon St. Hilary’s return from exile, St. Martin rejoined him and built a monastery at Liguge where he lived until being chosen Bishop of Tours in 371.

In his new dignity he continued to lead the same humble and mortified life as before. At first he lived in a little cell near the church, but he afterward laid the foundations of the celebrated monastery of Marmoutier, which then consisted only of a se-ries of grottoes in the rock, or of wooden cells, in which the holy Bishop and his disciples dwelt and performed their exercises of piety. A number of disciples flocked to his monastic standard, and he thus became the founder of monasticism in Gaul, as St. Anthony had been in Egypt and St. Hilarion in Palestine. This monastery also became a nursery of Bishops, such was the reputation of the disciples of St. Martin.

The zealous labors of the Saint succeeded in extirpating idolatry from the diocese of Tours and the neighboring parts of Gaul. Although in the midst of the heresies of his time, he was a staunch adherent of the Catholic Faith. He, as well as St. Ambrose, energetically protested against those who would put heretics to death. The life of this great Saint was one of constant prayer. His virtues were also rewarded by an extraordinary gift of miracles. After a long life of more than eighty years, he died peace-fully in the year 397.

PRAYER God, Your Bishop St. Martin glorified You by both his life and his death. Renew in us Your grace, so that neither death nor life can separate us from Your love. Amen.

ST. MARTIN OF TOURS, Bishop

November 11—Patron of Soldiers

My Dear Parishioners,

As we gather on this “first day of the week” to celebrate the Lord Jesus’ Holy Resurrection we come to the 32nd Sunday in

Ordinary Time. In the Old Testament reading the Prophet Elijah meets a widow who believes that her days are coming to a

close along with that of her son. Her poverty will mean death due to starvation. The Prophet assures her that she will live but

that she must share the little she has. Unselfishly she does so by placing her hope in his words and to her amazement a miracle

occurs which provides for her life and that of her son. In the Gospel reading Jesus takes note of a poor widow who places the

last of her coins in the Temple treasury as an offering to the Lord. Her unselfish act is a sign of faith in the Lord who does not

abandon His holy ones. The humility and generosity of the widow are attributes that all of us, “saints in the making,” are

called to acquire if we hope to attain eternal life.

Both of these Scriptural texts speak of “the end” and MONEY. Since Jesus spoke more about money than about prayer (that’s

a fact!), let me begin by addressing this point first. Sharing our gifts with God is a matter that we are introducing to our young

children who attend the 9:15 Mass. Truthfully this suggestion came from some parents who asked that I place a basket near

the altar so that the children can place their Sunday offering when they come to Mass. We have been doing this for a couple of

weeks now and I am impressed with the participation. Just so that you will know, the monies collected will be sent to THE

HOLY CHILDHOOD ASSOCIATION which is a Pontifical organization which cares for children around the world who are

in need of basics (food, clothing, education, medicine, and more). Our children’s offerings will help poor children! THE SEC-

OND MONEY MATTER I would like to bring to you is the church roof repair work being done to the cupola. This metal

structure houses the carillon system which provides the bell sounds for divine worship. Since the days of Monsignor Hayes we

have experienced a water problem around the altar, which is directly below the cupola, especially during driving rain storms.

We can no longer do a “patch job” and must address this problem before we have a TREMENDOUS PROBLEM! Depending

upon the extent of the repairs, I may have to come to you and ask that a special offering be made to assist in the payment of

this crucial work on our church. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED AND I KNOW THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO COUNT ON

YOU!

Just 2 more Sundays left for the 2018 Liturgical Year. “The End” is our focus and we look forward to it with faith and hope.

Let us in this MONTH OF ALL SOULS offer prayers and Masses for the faithful departed who seek our assistance as they

make their way to God.

God bless you my good people!

Father Zig
