SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people no ce him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to lis-ten; then, in me, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. HABLA, SEÑOR, ESTAMOS ESCUCHANDO En la primera lectura de hoy Dios llama repe das veces en la no-che a un niño dormido. Ni el niño, Samuel, ni su maestro, Elí, en en-den quién está llamando. Pero la persistencia de Dios los convence. Samuel ya está listo; no para hacer algo todavía, pero dispuestos a escuchar. “Habla Señor, tu siervo te escucha” (1 Samuel 3:10). En el Evangelio, Jesús está afuera enseñando. Varias personas lo ven y comienzan a reunirse alrededor. Pronto se convierten en discí-pulos y, al igual que el joven Samuel, están listos, no para hacer algo todavía, pero dispuestos a escuchar. “Habla”, dicen, “te escucha-mos”. FEAST OF FAITH The Greeting At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are you.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response— “And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. FIESTA DE LA FE Del cumplimiento a la espiritualidad La Eucaristía dominical ha de ser más que un mero cumplimiento de uno de los mandamientos de la santa madre Iglesia. La participación plena, consciente y activa en la celebración litúrgica supone ser un punto no negociable en la vida de los cristianos. No es del mero cumplimiento del precepto donde obtenemos lo necesario para continuar nuestra vida (aunque puede darse), es más bien, de asumir en nuestra vida lo que implica celebrar la Eucaristía. Es, creo yo, hacernos eco de la voz de los mártires del Norte de África que, ante la posibilidad del martirio y la experiencia de la tortura a causa de su fe, fueron capaces de afirmar: “No podemos ser cristianos sin la Eucaristía”. Resulta obvio que la celebración es parte de esta cláusula, pero más allá está el atar la vida a ese misterio que se celebra; el transformar nuestra vida por la palabra proclamada, vivir con la frescura de tratarnos como hermanos y hermanas, hacernos pan para que todos coman; trabajar por la justicia como una posibilidad que puede comenzar ahora mismo y que como resultado tendrá la misericordia y la compasión hacia los demás. Si en realidad celebramos la plenitud del sacramento, domingo a domingo, no podremos ser cristianos sin la Eucaristía, sin convertirnos en lo que celebramos.

Reflec ons with the Word of God from the priests of St. Cecilia Parish

January 17, 2021 Read 1 Samuel 3: 3b-10, 19 1 Corinthians 6: 13c-15a, 17-20 John 1:35-42 The seeker asks Jesus, “Where are you staying? Jesus replies, “Come and you will see.”

What was it like when Jesus looked at someone? At mes he seems both imperious and tender; and on other occasions his glance is enough to invite a person to leave everything and follow him. His penetra ng look always opens the way for a soul to bare itself to God with an honest self-examina on and admission of the whole truth. Jesus desires to heal us and give us a new past through the Sacrament of Confession. When the priest absolves sins In the name of Christ they are washed away in His Precious Blood. Our deadened souls from mortal sin are now filled with mercy and grace; set free from the shame and guilt of a wounded past that no longer exists!

An excerpt from an anonymous true story: I remember walking to the parish office and wondering, “What if I can’t do it? What if my mind freezes in panic?” A er introducing myself to the recep onist I waited in the lobby for the priest. My hands were swea ng, my body ached with shivers as I’d never been so nervous, I expected to be judged. The priest arrived and we began, he was incredibly friendly and just listened and kept listening. I cried, I was mad at myself, I was ashamed. Seeing the crucifix on the wall moved the bo om of my heart to let everything out.

That day the skies were cloudy and overcast and at the me of the words of absolu on the sun poured through the windows! The ming of this was certainly Jesus’ arms hugging me, forgiving me, and I exclaimed “Thank, you I am so happy!” St. Paul’s experience of Christ’s penetra ng look made him let go of the past, and all his unfulfilled plans for happiness. He encourages us to remember we are members of his mys cal body, sta ng it is no longer I that live, but Christ who lives in me! Will you con nue to accept Jesus’ invita on to come and see this new life?

El buscador le pregunta a Jesús: "¿Dónde te quedas? Jesús responde: "Ven y verás."

¿Cómo era cuando Jesús miró a alguien? A veces parece imperioso y erno; y en otras ocasiones su mirada es suficiente para invitar a una persona a dejar todo y seguirlo. Su mirada penetrante siempre abre el camino para que un alma se desnuda ante Dios con un autoexamen honesto y la admisión de toda la verdad. Jesús desea sanarnos y darnos un nuevo pasado a través del Sacramento de la Confesión. Cuando el sacerdote absuel-ve los pecados En el nombre de Cristo, son lavados en Su Preciosa Sangre. Nuestras al-mas muertas del pecado mortal ahora están llenas de misericordia y gracia; liberado de la verguenza y la culpa de un pasado herido que ya no existe!

Un extracto de una historia real anónima: recuerdo haber caminado a la oficina parroquial y preguntándome: "¿Y si no puedo hacerlo? ¿Y si mi mente se congela en pánico?" Después de presentarme a la recepcionista, esperé en el ves bulo al sacerdote. Me sudaban las manos, me dolían el cuerpo como nunca había estado tan nervioso, que esperaba ser juzgado. El sacerdote llegó y comenzamos, él era increíblemente amable y sólo escuchó y siguió escuchando. Lloré, estaba enojada conmigo misma, me avergonzaba. Ver el crucifijo en la pared movió el fondo de mi corazón para dejar salir todo. Ese día los cielos estaban nublados y nublados y en el momento de las pala-bras de absolución el sol se vierte a través de las ventanas! El momento de esto fue ciertamente los brazos de Jesús abrazándome, perdonándome, y exclamé: "¡Gracias, soy tan feliz!" PART II APOSTOLIC LETTER: PATRIS CORDE OF THE HOLY FATHERFRANCIS ON THE 150th ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROCLAMATION OF SAINT JOSEPHAS PATRON OF THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH 1. A beloved father

The greatness of Saint Joseph is that he was the spouse of Mary and the father of Jesus. In this way, he placed himself, in the words of Saint John Chrysostom, “at the service of the entire plan of salvation”.[7] Saint Paul VI pointed out that Joseph concretely expressed his fatherhood “by making his life a sacrificial service to the mystery of the incarnation and its redemptive purpose. He employed his legal authority over the Holy Family to devote himself completely to them in his life and work. He turned his human vocation to domestic love into a superhuman oblation of himself, his heart and all his abilities, a love placed at the service of the Messiah who was growing to

maturity in his home”.[8] Thanks to his role in salvation history, Saint Joseph has always been venerated as a father by the Christian people. This is shown by the countless churches dedicated to him worldwide, the numerous religious Institutes, Confraternities and ecclesial groups inspired by his spirituality and bearing his name, and the many traditional expressions of piety in his honor. Innumerable holy men and women were passionately devoted to him. Among them was Teresa of Avila, who chose him as her advocate and intercessor, had frequent recourse to him and received whatever graces she asked of him. Encouraged by her own experience, Teresa persuaded others to cultivate devotion to Joseph.[9] Every prayer book contains prayers to Saint Joseph. Special prayers are offered to him each Wednesday and especially during the month of March, which is traditionally dedicated to him.[10] Popular trust in Saint Joseph is seen in the expression “Go to Joseph”, which evokes the famine in Egypt, when the Egyptians begged Pharaoh for bread. He in turn replied: “Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do” (Gen 41:55). Pharaoh was referring to Joseph the son of Jacob, who was sold into slavery because of the jealousy of his brothers (cf. Gen 37:11-28) and who – according to the biblical account – subsequently became viceroy of Egypt (cf. Gen 41:41-44). As a descendant of David (cf. Mt 1:16-20), from whose stock Jesus was to spring according to the promise made to David by the prophet Nathan (cf. 2 Sam 7), and as the spouse of Mary of Nazareth, Saint Joseph stands at the crossroads between the Old and New Testaments.

DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO CON MOTIVO DEL 150.° ANIVERSARIO DE LA DECLARACIÓN DE SAN JOSÉ COMO PATRONO

DE LA IGLESIA UNIVERSAL

1. Padre amado La grandeza de san José consiste en el hecho de que fue el esposo de María y el padre de Jesús. En cuanto tal, «entró en el servicio de toda la economía de la encarnación», como dice san Juan Crisóstomo[7]. San Pablo VI observa que su paternidad se manifestó concretamente «al haber hecho de su vida un servicio, un sacrificio al misterio de la Encarnación y a la misión redentora que le está unida; al haber utilizado la autoridad legal, que le correspondía en la Sagrada Familia, para hacer de ella un don total de sí mismo, de su vida, de su trabajo; al haber convertido su vocación humana de amor

doméstico en la oblación sobrehumana de sí mismo, de su corazón y de toda capacidad en el amor puesto al servicio del Mesías nacido en su casa»[8]. Por su papel en la historia de la salvación, san José es un padre que siempre ha sido amado por el pueblo cristiano, como lo demuestra el hecho de que se le han dedicado numerosas iglesias en todo el mundo; que muchos institutos religiosos, hermandades y grupos eclesiales se inspiran en su espiritualidad y llevan su nombre; y que desde hace siglos se celebran en su honor diversas representaciones sagradas. Muchos santos y santas le tuvieron una gran devoción, entre ellos Teresa de Ávila, quien lo tomó como abogado e intercesor, encomendándose mucho a él y recibiendo todas las gracias que le pedía. Sacrament of Baptism / Bautizos Baptisms are celebrated in English the 1st of the month (Saturdays) at 2pm (except during Lent). (Los niños de 6 años o más deben hacer un año de catecismo para poder bautizarse) Presentaciones Las presentaciones regularmente son el primer Sábado y Domingo del mes, durante la mi-sa. Por favor venga a la oficina para inscribir a su hijo/a. Hay una donación de $40 que se da con la inscripción. Sacrament of Marriage The Pastoral Guidelines for Marriage Prepara-tion are that a minimum of 7 months be set aside for personal preparation for marriage. Couples should refrain from setting a firm date until after they have called the office to discuss marriage plans. Weddings are celebrated Satur-days at 2pm.

Quinceañeras Celebraciones son Sábados. Las quinceañeras tienen que haber recibido los sacramentos (por lo menos 1ra Comunión). Comuníquese con la oficina para hacer una cita por lo menos 4 meses antes de la celebración. Para reservar la fecha de la Quinceañera la donación es de $350 y se debe traer el día de la cita.
