ST CAJETAN came into the world in 1480 Under the care of his pious mother he grew up in the tenderest sentiments of virtue Entering the ecclesiastical state he went to Rome hoping there to lead an obscure life but Pope Julius II forced upon him the of-fice of protonotary apostolic Upon the death of this Pope however he resigned the office and returned to Vicenza his native city
Both in Rome and Vicenza the Saint devoted himself as a member of pious confraternities to promoting the glory of God and the salvation of souls After some time he went to Venice and took up his abode in the hospital of that city Having returned to Rome he formed the idea of founding a society in which the members would endeavor to live like the apostles of old His com-panions in this enterprise were John Peter Caraffa afterward Pope Paul IV Paul Consiglieri and Boniface de Colle Thus began the Order of Regular Clerics now known as Theatines It was approved by Clement VII in 1524
During the sack of Rome by the Constable de Bourton St Cajetan was most cruelly treated In 1530 he succeeded Caraffa as Gen-eral of the Order and filled the office three years In spite of his numerous occupations the Saint spent many hours of the day in prayer and was often favored with extraordinary ecstasies Worn out by labors he died at Naples on August 7 1547 and was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X
PRAYER God You enabled St Cajetan Your Priest to lead an apostolic life Through his example and intercession help us always to trust in You and seek Your Kingdom unceasingly Amen

My Dear Parishioners
On this first day of the week the Lordrsquos Day we commemorate the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time We are currently in year B
of the Sunday Lectionary which draws the Gospel readings from Saint Mark Due to the brevity of Markrsquos Gospel there is not
enough material to fill all the Sundays of the year and therefore material from the Gospel of John is inserted This Sunday is
the first of 5 Sundays in which we will hear a portion of John chapter 6 known as the ldquoBread of Life Discourserdquo
Today we begin chapter 6 with the account of the multiplication of bread and fish in which the Lord Jesus miraculously feeds
5000 people This event will be the basis from which the Lord will speak to the Apostles about the Eucharist the sacrament
of His Body and Blood which is the food for eternal life The Apostles witness the miraculous feeding and participate in the
distribution and gathering up of what is left They will also participate in the Last Supper in which the Lord Jesus will take
bread and wine changing them into His Holy Precious and Life-giving Body and Blood He will also empower them (and
their successors) to perform this same ritual until He returns in glory
Chapter 6 is a wonderful presentation of the Churchrsquos Eucharistic theology We see in this chapter the faith the Church re-
ceived from the Apostles and how the celebration of the Eucharist is the center of our worship and the center of our lives Je-
sus gives us Himself in the Eucharist the Blessed Sacrament Holy Communion so that He may always be near us with us in
this food which comes from heaven
As your pastor I always look forward to this section of the lectionary because it provides me with a perfect opportunity to talk
with you about the Eucharist and the Holy Mass It gives us pause to reflect upon our adoration and devotion to Christ hidden
in the sacrament of the altar During these Sundays I hope through the homilies I deliver and the pastorrsquos articles I will write
they may instruct and for some remind about our Eucharistic reverence and conduct
Let me conclude by drawing attention to the Apostles (and their successors) who distribute and gather up the miraculous food
which the Lord provides Those in Holy Orders are the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion at every Mass Extraordinary
lay ministers are used in the event that there are not enough ordinary ministers available These fine lay people are to be peo-
ple of faith who demonstrate this faith by their words and deeds Their spiritual and devotional life is to excel so that others
may see their conduct and give glory to God I am always available to speak with anyone who feels they are being called to
serve the Church as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion The candidate must meet with me undergo training and
then be commissioned to serve in this ministry I will announce the two dates this fall when I will be meeting with all extraor-
dinary ministers of Holy Communion to review procedures and to discuss matters pertinent to the ministry
God bless you

ST CAJETAN Priest The Same DaymdashAugust 7

ST CAJETAN Priest The Same DaymdashAugust 7
