From the Pastor’s Desk

My dear parishioners,

This is the last Sunday in Ordinary Time, which coincides with the solemnity of Christ the King of the

Universe. Next Sunday, we begin the new liturgical year with the season of Advent. In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in response to growing move-ments of nationalism and secularism, and to the rise of totalitarian regimes. Pope Paul VI elevated the feast to the rank of solemnity and moved it to the last Sunday of the liturgical year, thus giving it an eschatological significance. It means that with the solemnity of Christ the King, we are already looking forward to the second coming of the Lord (Advent) when his kingship will be fully revealed. But the kingship of Christ is unlike the kingship of this world. In the Gospel of this Sunday, when asked by Pontius Pilate, “are you the king of the Jews?” The Lord answered, “my kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here” (John 18:36). Indeed, the Kingship of the Lord is not of this world, be-cause the Lord is not a king in the sense of the kings of this world. In fact, he is the King of kings and the King of the whole universe, because all power in heaven and on earth has been given to him (Cf. Mat. 28:18). He does not seek to conquer any territory because everything belongs to him; he has no army to fight for him because he preaches forgiveness. But the Lord wants to con-quer our hearts and take us out of the dominion of the prince of darkness and make us part of his everlasting kingdom of light and peace. We pray that through our faithfulness to the teachings of the Lord, we may contribute to the coming of his kingdom and to its manifestation in the world. God bless you always.
