A WORD FROM FR. JOHN…

In reflecting on our readings for Sunday Mass this week, I was struck by how the readings ask us to consider various conceptions of God and what God is like. What sort of God does Abraham imagine that he is bargaining with over the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah? Abraham does not question God’s right to punish the guilty. But he is concerned that God would sweep away the innocent with the guilty. For Abraham, a just God would not treat the innocent and guilty alike. In the face of such an image of God, Abraham acts very submissive and subservient, as he pushes God to spare the cities for the sake of 50, 45, 40, 30, 20 and then 10 innocent people. Abraham stops at 10. But could he have gone further? Did Abraham’s conception of God as a just judge prevent him from conceiving that God was so merciful that God would have spared the cities for fewer than ten people, say just two or three, or maybe even just one? Contrast that with what Paul tells us in his letter to the Colossians about what God is like. Paul offers an image of God who is infinitely gracious and merciful. God is no longer a just judge who wipes out the guilty. Instead, our God is one who brings us to life with Jesus, even though we were dead because of our sin and not a part of the covenant with Abraham through circumcision. Our God goes beyond merely forgiving all of our sins by obliterating the debts we owe as a result of our sins. God removes them from us, nailing them to the cross. As Paul says elsewhere that appears to be utter foolishness to secular thinkers and scandalous to religious thinkers. How is that possible? Consider the image of God that Jesus offers us in our gospel today. His disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray, to have an intimate, personal conversation with God. Notice the images that Jesus uses to portray God. First, we are to address God as our father. As you know, the word that Jesus uses is Abba, which is akin to our use of daddy or papa—a very familiar, endearing and intimate form of address. Regardless of our own experience with fathers or parental figures in our own life, our God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is worthy of being called such. And God desires that sort of close, loving, personal relationship with us. Second, we are to approach God as a friend that we could go to in the middle of night when they and their household are asleep, waking them up and asking that they give us something. And even if we don’t believe that God will give us what we need because of our friendship, we know that God will respond because of our persistence. In terms of giving us what we need, our Heavenly Father gives us the best gift possible in the Holy Spirit. Given these differing conceptions of our God, we might ask ourselves what our own image of God is? And once we have done that, we ought to consider what that means for us who have been made in God’s image and likeness. We might reflect on that especially as it relates to the forgiveness we ask of God in the Lord’s Prayer and how that relates to the forgiveness we share with others. Many of you may be aware of the electrical project taking place at St. Mary’s that required the cutoff of power to the church and rectory this past week. When the entire electrical project is complete, we will finally have lights on the spire and new cross at St. Mary’s. There are a number of other projects in the works at all three of our campuses. This coming week the paving contactor will return to complete the parking lot at Blessed Sacrament, now that the city has repaired the sidewalk at the Rutgers St. entrance. In addition, a new sign on Monroe Avenue, school window repair project, refinishing of the church doors, work on the boiler in school, and church roof repairs are all in the works at Blessed Sacrament. A roofing contactor will be making needed repairs to the convent roof at St. Boniface. And we are looking into refinishing the St. Boniface church doors as well. As I mentioned previously, an electrical rewiring project on the Austin organ in the loft at St. Marys’ is underway. And in the next few months, work will start on a new boiler for the church and on repairs to the Madonna of the Highways shrine at St. Mary’s. Your contributions to the various parish building funds through the use of the special collection envelopes and judicious use of our savings make possible these needed projects to maintain our fourteen aging buildings. Thank you for continuing to be good stewards of God’s many gifts. Looking ahead to events in our parish, please be sure to mark your calendars for the Gateways Music Festival on Sunday, August 11th (see page 5), as a part of which we will welcome young African-American Classical musicians to our 10:30am Mass at St. Mary’s. And I invite you to join us for fun, food and fellowship at our All Parish Picnic on Sunday, August 18, from 11:30am to 2:30pm, in the Carmen Clark Lodge at Brighton Town Park. Tickets are on sale after all Masses starting this weekend and available through the parish office. Peace and blessings! Yours,

Fr. John

RENEWING AND REFRESHING ADULT FAITH

“The world needs changing, and this single idea of Holy Moments can change the world again. It has before.”

Taken from The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity by Matthew Kelly

During these summer weeks we will share Holy Moments sent to us by parishioners. You can add your name or remain anonymous. Email your comments to Sister Kathleen [email protected] or Peg Rosenthal [email protected] or drop them in the collection basket. Three Holy Moments occurring in our family recently were related to the severe illness of our neighbor who has a family of school-aged children. My wife and I put together a complete meal to give them to relieve the stress of hospital visits, leaving her no time for food preparation. In addition, I mowed his lawn and one of my sons volunteered to spread his mulch. —John Ladd Every Saturday morning from 10:00-11:00, while processing on the sidewalk in front of Highland Hospital, 1000 South Avenue, three mysteries of the rosary (15 decades are prayed for the end of the culture of death, primarily abortion). Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament: "The Holy Moments Hour" Pray the rosary regularly. —Gerard Ehmann

The mission of the Gateways Music Festival is to connect and support professional classical musicians of African descent and enlighten and inspire communities through the power of performance. These artists will be performing in Rochester at a variety of venues from August 6th through August 11th. Please see their website https://gatewaysmusicfestival.org/ for a full schedule of their performances. We at the Southeast Rochester Catholic Community are pleased to be one of their chosen venues! GMF is coming to our community on August 11th when we will welcome several of their musicians to St. Mary's Church. We will host these musicians who will perform a prelude of classical pieces preceding the 10:30 Mass beginning about 10 AM. They will also participate and enrich the music played during Mass. Please join us and tip-toe into church early! Also, among the sites where they will perform, there will be a symphony concert at Eastman Theatre that same evening, August 11, at 4pm.
