My Dear Parishioners,

If you carefully read our bulletin each

week, you have to notice that almost in eve-

ry edition, we announce the names of our

newly registered parishioners, whether they

come to us as a family or as individuals.

This steady influx of new members is a life-

line of continued vitality and strength for our

parish, because at the same time, there is a certain percentage of

parishioners who, because of downsizing or health issues, move

out of the area to find other senior living options.

While we bid farewell to our departing members, we are

happy to welcome our new arrivals! The way we do registra-

tions here at St. Bede's is that when a new family or individual

wants to register, they meet with one of us priests after Mass in

the main entrance, where close by we have a very nice office to

greet them, record important information, answer questions, etc.

Although it is a warm touch that our new members almost

immediately meet one of our priests, it is very important that

they also feel a welcoming embrace from the entire parish. The

reality is that although we are a warm community, it is still a

large parish. And with that comes a greater challenge to inte-

grate new families into the life and activities of our parish. Af-

ter all, they and us benefit when their talents and gifts are uti-

lized.

To remedy that challenge, last year our Pastoral Council

initiated the first ever "Welcoming Event for New Parishion-

ers." Our second event will take place on Sunday Oct. 25. All

parishioners who registered from Sept. 1, 2014 until Sept. 24,

2015 have received a letter from me, inviting you to the event,

which will take place immediately after the 11 a.m. Mass that

day. This event is for your whole family. Lunch will be served

in the Parish Hall. Young children can join our Teen Youth

Group for games and entertainment in the gym, while parents

can relax and hear about all of the various groups and activities

we have here at St. Bede.

Last year's event helped to bring strangers together, and cre-

ated a better sense of the family that we are here at St. Bede. I

know this year's event will do the same. If you are a new family

and you did not receive a letter for some reason, please call the

Parish Office as soon as possible (215-357-5720.) We do not

want to miss anyone!

God Bless you,

Scripture Readings Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 18, 2015 Isaiah 53:10–11

Psalm 33

Hebrews 4:14–16

Mark 10:35–45 or 10: 42-45 The disciples in Mark’s Gospel still don’t seem to get it! Now

James and John are asking for favors from Jesus, instead of asking

what more they can do. Jesus’ response makes it clear that a true

disciple follows Jesus in every way, including giving oneself over

to serving others. Whoever would be great must be the servant of

all. Listening to these words today, let us give thanks to God for the

great gift of Jesus Christ, and pray for the grace to become more

like Him.

Knights of Columbus Meeting The next meeting of the Saint Bede Parish

Knights of Columbus Council 15478 is sched-

uled for Thursday Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the

Drexel Center. ALL Knights should check their

email for details and respond to Ed Bagdon to

confirm attendance at [email protected].

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is one of the most pro-

found types of prayer that we have as Catholics. Jesus wished

to stay with us, and the means He chose is the Blessed Sacra-

ment. He is present, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the

Most Holy Eucharist. At any time of the day or night, you can

come to the chapel and Jesus is there…. waiting for You!

If you attended last week’s Forty Hours Devotion and want

to continue your time with the Lord, please consider dedicating

one hour each week by filling one of our open hours or by shar-

ing an hour with a prayer partner.

St. Bede’s is blessed to have its’ own perpetual adoration

chapel. We need your help to keep our adoration perpetual (24

hours a day / 7 days a week).

World Mission

Sunday Collection Oct. 18 “World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment when the faith-

ful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of

solidarity in support of the young Churches in mission lands." -

Pope Francis

On Oct. 18, our Archdiocesan family celebrates this "privileged

moment" joining with our brothers and sisters around the world

who will gather at the Lord's Table to celebrate, with great joy, our

common vocation as Missionaries. Our prayers and concrete ges-

tures of solidarity will help build local churches across the globe.

Through the work of missionaries in these churches, and their wit-

ness to Christ, the needy receive practical help and experience

God's love and mercy, His hope and peace.

Your prayers and material support will help the Pontifical Mis-

sion Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Holy Father's

chief missionary arm, to provide resources to missionaries who

proclaim the Gospel and offer help to our brothers and sisters

throughout 1,150 mission dioceses.

Join us after the Masses on Sunday Oct. 25, when we will

be holding our annual Welcome Event for New Parishion-

ers, in the Parish Cafeteria. Meet the priests, and find out

about the many groups and events that make St. Bede such

an active and welcoming parish.

St. Bede 103 October 11, 2015

On Sunday, October 25th, our school

will be welcoming the following members of

our Middle States Visiting Team:

Mrs. Peggy Rizzuto, Chairperson /

Principal of Saint Rose of Lima School

Ms. Erin Dolce, STEM Teacher at

Annunciation BVM School

Mrs. Michele Manganello, 5th Grade Teacher at Good

Shepherd Academy

Ms. Margaret Snyder, Principal at Saint Joseph School

Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools is a non-

profit organization which accredits schools and colleges

throughout the world and has been considered a reliable author-

ity on the quality of a school’s education for 125 years. Our

faculty and staff led by our planning committee (Mrs. Kane,

Mrs. Zanaras, and Mrs. Curtin) completed our self-study and

action plan. The process is an exhaustive self-study that leads

to Middle States re-accreditation as it helps the school prepare

for the future.

The Middle States Team has already received our data driv-

en self-study. The visit is to determine if the study is valid and

if SKD is the nurturing and academically successful environ-

ment as found in our study. The team is looking for a commu-

nity of teachers/students/parents who are loyal and supportive

of the school because that is what makes a school successful.

At SKD, our future begins each day, and our students are

fortunate to have been blessed with the opportunity to receive a

Catholic Education. It is my firm belief that our visiting team

will witness the enthusiasm, love, and energy of our school

community and our mission in forming Catholic leaders

through academic excellence, personal discipline, and Christian

service.

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Our students will

be praying the rosary each day in their class. We also encour-

age each of our families to say a decade of the rosary each day

in October. Consider doing it weekly with your family mem-

bers before dinner, driving in the car, or before bedtime. As

always, we appreciate your support and commitment to Saint

Katharine Drexel Regional Catholic School. During this

month, let us ask Mary, Our Mother, to make us an instrument

of God’s peace.

St. Bede 103 October 11, 2015

Dear Parishioners,

Monday - October 12, the Sacrament

of Reconciliation & Penance will be offered

for all CCD children in grades three to

eight during the 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

CCD sessions. Of course, our Sunday ses-

sion CCD children are also invited to come to

one of those Monday sessions.

To understand reconciliation, we must first understand sin.

Sin isn't merely disobeying a rule or doing a bad thing; it is an

offense against God, which hurts our relationship with Him. It

also harms our communion with the Church. Reconciliation,

therefore, is a change of heart, which restores unity with both

God and the people of God. For Catholics, this happens

through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Through confession, sins are admitted to the priest, who

represents Christ. Contrition, recognition of sinfulness, and a

resolution not to sin again are all part of the sacrament. The

Sacrament of Reconciliation not only helps form our con-

sciences and strengthens us spiritually, but it also allows us to

maintain a close friendship with God and unity with our broth-

ers and sisters in the faith.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a reminder to all of us

that "God loves us no matter what." Let us keep each other

in prayer.

Pennsylvania House Bill 1510/Senate Bill 974 would add

"gender identity or expression" and "sexual orientation" to Penn-

sylvania's non-discrimination law. Changing the Pennsylvania

Human Relations Act (PHRA) will jeopardize many churches and

their charitable outreach if they continue to adhere to their reli-

gious beliefs. In other states, this law has closed Catholic adoption

agencies and violated religious liberty. These bills could mean that

Catholic agencies would no longer be able to make our contribu-

tions to the common good of Pennsylvania without violating our

religious beliefs.

The law has also caused conflicts for private business owners

with legitimate religious and moral concerns. For example, a

baker in Oregon closed her shop after a lengthy legal battle. She

was forced to close because her religious beliefs dictated she not

bake a wedding cake for a same sex couple. Other examples in-

clude photographers, a t-shirt printer and a cookie shop. All are

given the unfair choice: close your business or violate your beliefs.

In reality, HB 1510/SB 974 exposes even more Pennsylvanians

to discrimination based solely on their religious beliefs. Simply

put, this legislation is intolerant and prejudiced against people of

faith.

Stand for true tolerance - oppose Senate Bill 974 and House

Bill 1510.
