30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

All Souls Day, Mass of Remembrance at the Mission Thursday, November 2 Mass for the Feast of All Souls will be celebrated at the Mission Church on November 2 at 6:00 p.m. We will remember all our parishioners who passed to their reward this past year and all who are buried/interred in the Mission Cemetery. You will be invited to pick up a candle at the door as you come into the church and during the Universal Prayers may place it on the side-altars near the sanctuary in memory of your loved one. After Mass, Friars will be available in the cemetery to pray with you by the graves of your loved ones and to bless their resting places with holy water. Refreshments will be served on the Portico after Mass. All are welcome to this special remembrance of our beloved dead.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Old Mission Santa Barbara, Reflecting on this Sunday’s Gospel, Sulpician pastor and teacher Father Corbin Eddy makes the following observation: “The two great commandments engage our whole humanity in an ongoing conversation with God and with each other.” I take this to mean that Jesus’s call to us to love whole-heartedly means being willing to listen to God and to one another about the most important matters of our lives as human beings. Speaking and listening from the heart are truly central to the on-going practice of loving God and one another. I recall speaking with a man some years ago who told me he was growing distant from his wife and family because demands on his time and energy at work were exhausting him and eliminating the space he and his wife used to make just for themselves to catch up on “heart” matters. He was feeling the sad effects of a diminished sacred territory, the place where love is seeded. Heart to heart conversations with parish leaders and others have been a huge blessing to me over the past few weeks. We have begun to probe the question of what it means to be a Franciscan Center of Evangelization here at Old Mission Santa Barbara. This Sunday’s first reading underscores the importance of turning those conversations toward questions of conscience and action. How are our attitudes and actions directed toward the poor and to-ward the immigrant among us? These questions and others like them are demanded by our commitment to a whole-hearted practice of Gospel love. Gratefully, Fr. Dan, ofm

Gospel of God, but our very selves as well.

Holy Gospel- Matthew 23:1-12 They preach but they do not practice.

Reflection On

Next Sunday’s Gospel

The prayer over the offerings is a paradox, asking God to allow our sacrifice to be pure even while we who offer it are sinful. This is another aspect of the same mystery. It is God who makes us worthy to offer sacrifice, just as it is God who gives us the faith to believe in God. The Communion antiphons both celebrate the result of this paradox. Because God gives us the faith and because God makes us worthy, the path we walk will be the path of life. So, at the end, we know God as the source of all, and this is what the prayer after Communion makes clear, asking God to continue to sustain us in love. As for the preface and eucharistic prayer, the paradox of God's love and our sinfulness is best seen in the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses of Reconciliation I with its preface.

Did You Know …

Saint John of Capistrano October 23

Saint John of Capistrano’s Story

It has been said the Christian saints are the world’s greatest optimists. Not blind to the existence and consequences of evil, they base their confidence on the power of Christ’s redemption. The power of conversion through Christ extends not only to sinful people but also to calamitous events.

Imagine being born in the 14th century. One-third of the population and nearly 40 percent of the clergy were wiped out by the bubonic plague. The Western Schism split the Church with two or three claimants to the Holy See at one time. England and France were at war. The city-states of Italy were constantly in conflict. No wonder that gloom dominated the spirit of the culture and the times.

John Capistrano was born in 1386. His education was thorough. His talents and success were great. When he was 26 he was made governor of Perugia. Imprisoned after a battle against the Malatestas, he resolved to change his way of life completely. At the age of 30 he entered the Franciscan novitiate and was ordained a priest four years later.

John’s preaching attracted great throngs at a time of religious apathy and confusion. He and 12 Franciscan brethren were received in the countries of central Europe as angels of God. They were instrumental in reviving a dying faith and devotion.

The Franciscan Order itself was in turmoil over the interpretation and observance of the Rule of St. Francis. Through John’s tireless efforts and his expertise in law, the heretical Fraticelli were suppressed and the “Spirituals” were freed from interference in their stricter observance. John of Capistrano helped bring about a brief reunion with the Greek and Armenian Churches.

When the Turks captured Constantinople in 1453, John was commissioned to preach a crusade for the defense of Europe. Gaining little response in Bavaria and Austria, he decided to concentrate his efforts in Hungary. He led the army to Belgrade. Under the great General John Hunyadi, they gained an overwhelming victory, and the siege of Belgrade was lifted. Worn out by his superhuman efforts, Capistrano was an easy prey to an infection after the battle. He died on October 23, 1456.

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Question for Children: We show our love for Jesus by loving our friends and family. Share one way that you show your love.

Question for Youth: Jesus tells us that we are to love others as we love ourselves. Do you love yourself? Can you see the good that God has put within you? Do you find it easier to love others or yourself?

Question for Adults: Repeat the two commandments which Jesus teaches today in your own words? For each of them, share how it has become part of your life.

Keeping our Children Safe

Stress can affect the children around you

Everyone has stress, whether it is a bad day at work, car trouble, or simply too many things to do. It is important to learn how to manage your stress – for your own sake and for the children around you. Too much stress can make it difficult to parent effectively. After a while, your children may show signs of stress, too. To learn more about how to identify and cope with stress. visit:https://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/stress-management.htm.
