CHURCH OF ST. AUGUSTINE, Larchmont, New York July 5th
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
QUOTE FROM THE PASTOR “I am meek and humble of heart.” Matthew 11:29
Pastor’s Corner
LOOK TO THE HEAVENS
Fr. Isaiah has just realized for perhaps the fortieth time during our long history together that I had once again been playing God. Did I actually confess this? No way. His clue was my pitiful cry: “The yoke is NOT easy and the burden is NOT light!” This time around, I’d convinced my-self that I was in charge of sheep-dogging the latest po-litical fight in Washington, banning assault weapons, and reversing climate change. My penance sounded pretty easy. After reading sever-al verses on the unfathomable mystery of God, I was to go outside and look at the stars. “That’s it?” I asked him. “That’s it,” he said. “You could change the order if you want—look first, read afterward?” Fr. Isaiah has been a monk of New Camal-doli Hermitage on the Big Sur coast for nearly forty years. He’s a very experienced stargazer. I stepped into the black night. A warm wind rattled the oak leaves. At the foot of the mountain far below, the vast Pacific thrummed against the shore. There I stood, exposed in all my human foolishness, mesmerized by the hum of whirling galaxies. Jesus’ famous verse can be aggravating when you are feeling crushed beneath the weight of self-imposed re-sponsibility. The verse doesn’t pat you on the back for your good intentions. It doesn’t acknowledge that life can be exhausting or offer sweet words of comfort. Instead, it points you silently toward the heavens. It says, “O small beloved person, it is not all up to you. PRAYER FOR RACIAL HEALING God of Heaven and Earth,
You created the one human family and endowed each person with great dignity.
Aid us, we pray, in overcoming the sin of racism. Grant us Your grace in eliminating this disease
from our hearts, our communities, our social and civil institutions.
Fill our hearts with love for You and our neighbor so that we may work with You
in healing our land from racial injustice. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
LAUDATO SI’: ON CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME
Pope Francis’ letter to the world about our environment is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and its message is even more urgent than it was in 2015. In addition to the closer examination that many Catholic organizations (Global Catholic Climate Movement, Catho-lic Climate Covenant and more) and orders (Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans, etc.) took during Laudato Si’ Week at the end of May, Pope Francis has declared a Year of Laud-ato Si’ until May 24, 2021. Let’s join together in small groups now to read this simple but powerful encyclical. We will discuss it online, one chapter per week for six weeks. Please contact [email protected] or Wen-dy at 834-1843. “God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good.” (Genesis 1:13)

SCRIPTURE STUDY Planning a staycation this summer like so many other parishioners? Use some of your time to draw
closer to God. Learn about God’s word and have meaning-ful discussions with other parishioners by joining us for a Scripture study on Zoom this summer. We will meet once a week for 4-6 weeks — groups will be scheduled when members are available— to study, for example, A Panora-ma of the New Testament or The Gospel according to Matthew (the Gospel of this liturgical year) or Women of the Old Testament. (Other topics you might prefer are at litpress.org; their studies can also be done on an individu-al basis.) We will also have shorter 3-session faith sharing groups online where we examine subjects such as Hope; or Finding Peace: Letting Go of Stress & Worry; or Mercy from a scriptural perspective. Please contact [email protected] or call Pat McNamara at 834-0663.
PARISH READ Would you like to join a group of parishioners
and read a book together this summer? We will be read-ing Racial Justice & the Catholic Church by Fr. Bryan Massingale of Fordham’s Theology Department. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to meet for online discussions.
