St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

Dear Friends, When we receive Holy Communion we welcome Jesus into our lives in a real and profound way. We know that the truth of His Real Presence was a difficult teaching for the first people who heard Him talk about it. But we are among the blessed ones who have always lived and learned from and about Jesus with the benefit of the entire context. We know about the Cross and the Resurrection. We know that chapter 6 of St. John finds it's "how can this be?" explained and answered in the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper. We know that the Apostles obeyed Jesus and did what He told them to do “in remembrance of me.” The Mass has been celebrated since the very first days of Christianity. Try thinking about and meditating on the very first Masses celebrated by the Apostles after Jesus’ Ascension. Having seen Him fulfill His word so many times they knew He would do so in the prayer of the Mass. By praying His words and performing His ritual actions the Apostles brought Him back to them again. And again. “I am with you always....” The Jesus who came to them was, of course, the Risen Jesus. When they received Him they were sharing His Resurrection. The Flesh they consumed had returned to life. The one who received those first Communions most reverently and with the most love was His sinless Mother, Mary. Each time she did so she became more like Him. It is easier for us to love the Mystery of Mary’s Assumption when we add this reality to our understanding of it. Try to imagine the love between Jesus and Mary. Honor it this week by celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption at Mass. It is this Wednesday, with a vigil Mass on Tuesday evening as well. This week we thank our good Seminarian, Jonathan Smith, for his excellent work among us this summer. Let’s keep him in our prayers as he returns to his studies. Godspeed, Jonathan! As well, we welcome our new Director of Youth Ministry, James Armstrong. You will see James around the parish. I look forward to seeing greater opportunities for our young people. Welcome, James! With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor P.S. A special word of thanks goes out to everyone (and there were many!) who helped with the Divino Salvador del Mundo Festival and Procession! In particular, we thank Fr. Alan for his leadership for this special day.

From Our Pastor,

Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler

De Nuestro Párroco,

Padre Mateo Zuberbueler

“Walking with a Purpose”—

Women’s Bible Study Coming this Fall Psalm 46:5 God is within her, she will not fall. Have you ever felt like you were walking alone in your faith? Do you ever wish to know more women like you? You are no longer alone. Walking With Purpose, a woman’s bible study is coming to St. Anthony! Join us on Tuesday evenings beginning this Fall, with other women, as we discuss the word of God and gain insights for living out a Christian life together. Inquires at [email protected] Please let us know your thoughts. Someone will be reaching out to obtain the applications.

STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship of Time and Talent

“Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!”— 1 Kings 19:7

Jesus knows that our stewardship journey will be difficult; we are not designed to do it on our own. Fortunately, Jesus gave us the greatest gift of all – the gift of the Eucharist; His own body and blood.

When we join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength and courage to be His joyful disciples.

Dear St. Anthony Family, Our school is lifted up by the constant prayers of the Saint Anthony of Padua Parishioners. We are most thankful for all of these prayers and for the generosity received in all of your gifts. As many of you know, on

July 1st our school has been renamed for our Patron Saint, and returned to being a parish school, supported solely by your generosity; this is an exciting new beginning for all of us as a faith family. This is also a time of planning for the future, for all of us. Jesus asks us to demonstrate our love for Him through our generosity to others. In our everyday lives, He calls us to share our gifts of time, talent, and treasure with others. “While we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.” (Galatians 6:10) A gift in any amount given through an estate will strengthen our household of faith, and help build the future of Catholic Education at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic School. For more information please reach out to our Director of Development & Advancement, Dr. Ed Andercheck [email protected], otherwise visit www.arlingtondiocese.planyourlegacy.org or call the Diocesan Planned Giving Office directly at (703) 841-3819.
