  • Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Sunday we begin again our following of the Lord. Both the First Reading and the Gospel passage from John challenge our view of who Jesus is and what we are to do in response of our personal recognition of Him. John’s Gospel is unique in its presentation of the life and preaching of our Lord, and of the many stories of the interactions of Jesus with the apostles. This Sunday we hear of the interaction of the first meeting of our Lord with His eventual closest followers. Simon & Andrew and the brothers James & John are seeing John the Baptist’s point and say “Behold, the Lamb of God!” In these trusted words St. John the Baptist ‘directs’ the brothers to recognize the unseen reality – that Jesus is more than a simple Nazarene Rabbi. It is the great St. Andrew who then guides his brother Simon to see Jesus for who He truly is – “We have found the Messiah, the Anointed one of God”. It takes the full length of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke for the apostles to recognize what by the end of chapter one of John’s Gospel happens – that Simon is henceforth ‘Peter’ because he sees that Jesus is no simple man. Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel is all foreshadowed by the Old Testament prophets and sages – that Jesus would come as Savior and Redeemer. Jesus’ response to the following of James & John, disciples first of his cousin John the Baptist, is unique also in this Gospel – Jesus says, “What are you looking for?” These words are the very first spoken by the Anointed One in John’s Gospel – and they are not meant to sound like the annoyed response of a simple teacher. In the context of the passage, they form the question addressed by the eternal Word made flesh to the heart of any person who seeks to follow Jesus as more than a simple Rabbi; what, really are you trying to find in this life?

In the midst of many trials and challenges in our daily lives, Jesus asks us the same question – “What

are you looking for?” And what is our personal response? Jesus’ response to the brothers’ further question – “Where are you from?” is integral to our understanding: Jesus’ words ‘come and see’ – as the everyday expression summarizes for us – seeing is believing. James and John thenceforth ‘see’ with the eyes of faith all the miracles and works of Jesus over 3 years, and then become two of his closest friends and apostles. What do we need to make the same assent of faith? Does Jesus need to stand before us to perform some great miracle or sign? No – what we need is not physical – we need the spiritual – and this spiritual sign is what Samuel seeks in the first reading: “speak Lord, your servant is listening”. We need to have our ‘spiritual ears’ open and waiting for the quiet voice of God which invites us, like the first apostles, to see how our lives will be immemorially changed by our encounter with His grace, making us like James, John, Andrew and Simon spiritual friends and close disciples of the one who knows our hearts and wishes to grant peace to our restless hearts. Please know of my gratitude to all those who have assisted over the Christmas holiday to make our liturgies beautiful and special. Many thanks go to Mrs. Leonetti and our many cantors and organists, the choir members who sang at our Midnight Mass, our sacristans, and those who assisted as ushers and greeters at the many Masses we celebrated. Know also of my gratitude to those who generously donated to our parish for Christmas. Your financial contributions go to making our parish stable and able to serve many here in church and in our community at large. Thank you for all that you do for our wonderful community of faith!

May God bless you and your loved ones this week! + Father Rossi

  • Vincentian Message… In the Gospel today, Jesus asks “What are you looking for? Often, we are looking for happiness in very selfish ways, but we find that when we look for ways to make others happy, it is then that we truly become happy. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent DePaul poor box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to believe and to trust.

    GIVING TREE Thank you…

During this season when we rejoice at the coming of the Christ Child, all of us here at the Mission of St. Joan of Arc would like to thank the parishioners of St. Anselm Church for your wonderful generosity to the people whom we serve here in the neighborhood of Harrowgate. Your great outpouring of gifts, financial donations and gift cards made Christ truly alive and present to many children and their families during this especially difficult time. Be assured our continued prayers for you and your intentions throughout this upcoming New Year. Please pray for us. -S. Linda Lukiewski, SSJ

    Receipts for 2020 Church Contributions

You may pick up your receipts for your 2020 contributions at the Parish Center during business hours Monday thru Friday beginning Monday, January 25th. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Joanne between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM.

    SCRIP Disbursements

Families who have earned a $25.00 minimum credit between July and December have been notified by email as to your tuition credit. Credit will be directed to your February tuition payment. If you are directing your earnings to a school other than St. Anselm, your check is available at the SCRIP office.

    CARING FOR FRIENDS

As the need for assistance becomes greater during our winter months, we encourage you to continue to provide meals and we would welcome new participation. If you are able to make extra when preparing your dinners, there are containers in the History Room in which to place a meal and provide dinner for someone in need.

    FUEL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The cost of home heating will have a major impact on monthly budgets. To assist people with these rising costs, the Pennsylvania Home Heating Fuel Assistance Rebate Program (LIHEAP) is now in progress. This Fuel Assistance Program is available to people of all ages within the income guidelines. For example, individuals with a monthly income less than $1,595, or a two-person household with a monthly income under $2,155 qualify for the grant. Call United Social Services at 215-923-1900 Monday thru Friday between 11 AM and 4 PM. A staff worker will explain the eligibility requirements, answer your questions and assist you in completing an application. This grant is provided to all who qualify and does not have to be repaid. All inquiries are strictly confidential.
