SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 1 Kings 3:5,7-12. Solomon pleases God when he asks for a wise and understanding heart to better govern the people. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 119:57,72,76-77,127-130. The law of the Lord is more precious than silver and gold. Gospel Reading Matthew 13:44-52. Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of Heaven. Reflecting on God’s Word In his book Live and Learn and Pass It On, H. Jackson Brown, Jr. has published some lists of the lessons that people have learned in life. These contain one-liners that capture the wisdom gained by youngsters and oldsters through their every-day adventures. Clearly these sayings give expression to the voice of experience. So why does it take so long to come upon such wisdom? Why can’t it be issued to us when we’re born? It would be so much easier. But that’s not how it happens. The wisdom has to find us. The reign of God, too, seems to find us rather than the other way around. At least that’s what the Gospel this Sunday seems to suggest when it compares the reign of God to a treasure found buried in a field. Treasures tend to find us, some-times even when we’re actually searching for them, as in the Gospel’s tale of the fine pearl. That’s why Solomon needed to lean on God for some wisdom, because he couldn’t come to it on his own. It’s also why parents can’t make their children believers, because faith finds us. In fact, some folks would suggest that most of the really valuable things we wait for are all part and parcel of God’s reign, things like love or wisdom or the joy that comes with the perfect job or the child you’ve been waiting for. In one way or another, God’s reign finds us.

DIOCESAN 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its annual Golden Wedding Cele-bration for the couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. This year’s event will begin with Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at 2:30pm. Bishop Zubik will be the main celebrant. A reception will follow in the lower hall at the Cathedral. Cathedral and hall are both accessible.

If you are one of the couples celebrating your 50th anniversary in 2014, and would like to receive an invi-tation to this event, please call the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket no later than August 10th.

First Friday, August 1st—As the Church continues to celebrate the mystery of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist, it calls always for a deeper understanding of Christ’s gift to us and so let us make every effort and, if we can, to attend the daily celebration of Christ’s presence at Holy Trinity and St. Agnes faith com-munities. At Holy Trinity, Mass is at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. At St. Agnes, Mass is at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Also, we heartily recommend your presence the First Friday of each month at Holy Trinity for the Holy Hour—reflections, prayers, and the closing Solemn Benediction—that will follow the scheduled 8:00 a.m. Mass.

Prayerful thanks to the many who made contributions to St. Agnes & Holy Trinity in memory of Robert Schaff, Jr. of St. Agnes and Margaret Gamret of Holy Trinity. May our Heavenly Father embrace all our beloved deceased and number them among

the elect at the banquet of Heaven.

Word’s To Live By…. During my life’s journey on this planet, I shall start each day with these affirmations: I am capable. I am worthwhile. I am beautiful. I am lovable. I shall accept both my weaknesses and strengths for they are me. I shall never again believe the “lie” that if I make a mistake, I am a mistake. My mistakes are the learning tools that I shall encounter in my life’s journey. When I learn from my mistakes, I give them meaning. When I give my mistakes meaning, I can

begin to forgive myself. I can begin to heal. I shall not use mistakes as excuses to give up on me. My mis-takes are not me. I shall seek the wisdom to nourish my heart, mind, body and soul so that I may feel cen-tered; providing an energy reserve that allows me to climb the mountains of my life; providing an energy that allows me to love and support others who are climbing a different mountain; providing an energy reserve that allows time for friends, play and the celebration of life. I shall allow myself to feel capable, so that I may seek excellence. I shall allow myself to feel sadness, so that joy may return. I shall allow myself to feel joy, so that I may be revitalized. I shall allow myself to feel afraid, so that I may feel courage. I shall allow myself to feel alone, so that I may know me. I shall allow myself to feel beautiful, so that I may feel free. I shall allow myself to feel lovable, so that loving may seek me. I shall allow myself to feel pain, so that I may heal. I shall allow myself to feel worthy, so that I may fulfill my purpose. Words we can all live by today and every day of our lives Author Unknown

DUQUESNE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT CHICKEN DINNER Saturday, August 9th, 11am - 6pm, Duquesne VFW, Second Street, Duquesne

$10/pp (pay at the door)

Why We Need to Go to Mass? Normal complaints of children, “Why do we have to go to Mass?” The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Catholic practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on the days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail this obligation commit a grave sin.” This attendance is a need as common to a Catholic as the need to eat and breathe. One’s participation in this communal celebration is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and His Church. There is never a vacation from God. There is never a vacation from church.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR MASS ATTENDANCE 1. Get there on time. Would you come late to a dinner party? Arriving on time shows respect. 2. Forgotten what to do at Mass? It’s like riding a bike. Plus, every parish has a “how to” handbook. 3. It’s called the missalette or order of worship. All you need to do is follow along or listen to the readings. 4. Dress appropriately. Would you wear athletic clothes to a wedding or other special occasion? 5. The reception of Communion is open to all Catholics who are not conscious of serious sin. 6. Remember to fast for one hour prior to Communion. Be prepared to receive the Lord. 7. Sing. Active participation will make you a more Eucharistic person and those who sing pray twice.

A Child’s 10 Commandments to Parents 1. My hands are small; please don't expect perfec-

tion whenever I make a bed, or throw a ball. My legs are short; please slow down so that I can keep up.

2. Please let me explore the world safely. but don’t restrict me unnecessarily.

3. Housework will always be there. I’m only little for a short time; please take time, explain things to me about this world and do so willingly.

4. My feelings are tender; please be sensitive to my needs. Don’t nag me all day long. (You would-n’t want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness.) Treat me as you want to be treated.

5. I am a special gift from God; please treasure me as God intended you to do, holding me account-able for my actions, giving me guidelines to live by and disciplining me in a loving manner.

6. I need your encouragement to grow. Please go easy on the criticism; remember you can criticize the things I do without criticizing me.

7. Please give me freedom to make decisions. Per-mit me to fail, so that I can learn from my mis-takes. Then someday I’ll be prepared to make the kind of decisions that life requires of me.

8. Please don’t do things over for me. Somehow that makes me feel that my efforts didn’t quite measure up to your expectations. I know it’s hard, but please don’t try to compare me to my brother or sister.

9. Please don’t be afraid to leave for a weekend to-gether. Kids need vacations from parents, just as parents need vacations from kids. Besides it’s a great way to show us kids that your marriage is very special.

10. Please take me to church regu-larly, setting a good example for me. I enjoy learning more about God.

Football Mania Sweepstakes tickets benefiting our school are now available!! Tickets are $20 for 17 weeks of the regular football season.
