The objective of lighting design is to have the appropriate light distribution for varied kinds of surrounding subjects, making the

visual performance effective, meanwhile create the joyful atmosphere for the mind and body. In consideration of this objective, it is

necessary to take the following nine aspects of requirements into considerations.

1. Luminance requirement:

1)The luminance requirement varies based upon different buildings and places; even though for the same place, the luminance

requirement also varies, owing to that different position has different functions. So it is the basis to determine the luminance

standards for the lighting design.

Common Sense of Lighting Application

The total amount of visible light that the light resource gives out in the unit time represents

the shining capacity of the light resource itself.

The visible light strength that gives out in one certain direction represents the rule of light

resource shining distribution.

The luminous flex amount in the unit area represents the brightness of one certain place.

The light source in one certain direction’s unit projection plane’s amount of reflected light

in the unit solid angle is called light brightness in one certain direction.

light resource luminous efficacy, namely ratio between luminous flex that the light resource

has given out and the electrical power that the light resource has consumed.

The ratio between the luminous flux that is measured based upon the value the light gives

out in the rated conditions and the luminous flex measured value that all the light resources

give out in the lights, which is an important standard to measure light utilize energy

efficiency.

It is shown by absolute temperature Kelvin , which means to heat one standard black object

and the temperature rises to one certain degree and then the color turn from red, pale red,

orange yellow, white, blue white to blue. When the light color that the light resource gives

out is the same as the radiated color of the black object at one certain temperature, the

temperature of the black object then is called the light resource color temperature. The

higher the temperature is and the higher the blue constituent is, then thehigher the red

constituent is.

Glare is the phenomenon that there are objects that has the extremely high brightness or strong brightness comparison in the view range, which may cause the discomfort or bad visual effect. The glare could be divided into disability glare and discomfort glare. Any glare that reduces the man’s eyesight is called disability glare, while any glare that could cause man’s discomfort is called discomfort glare. Glare is one of the most important factors to influence the lighting quality.

The presentation degree of the light resource to the object colors. In principle, the man-made light ray should be the same as the natural light ray and could make man’s eyes could correctly distinguish the object colors. The color rendering index indicates the judgment towards the light resource color rendering. The higher the color rendering index is, the better the color rendering is.

The color temperature is mainly used to create the space atmosphere. To adopt the warm or cool hue could create a totally

different atmosphere with the same place. The warm hue could create the warm and sweet, romantic and joyous atmosphere,

while the cool hue could create the modern, brief and salubrious atmospheres. When it is applied, it should act according to

the circumstances. The higher the color temperature is, the stronger the sense of coldness is;the lower the color temperature

is, the stronger the sense of warmth and softness is. The high color temperature (5000K or above) belongs to the cool tone,

with white light or even almost blue. The low temperature (2700-3000K) belongs to the warm tone, with yellow light. Neutral

white light(4000K,4200K), white with almost yellow, is regarded as the intermediate color of warm and cool color temperature.

3.The Requirement on Color Rendering

Color rendering index is also called color rendering, which measures the light source capacity of showing the real color of the

reflected objects. The higher the color rendering (0-100), the closer to the natural color the reproduction of the light source to

the color. The color rendering of various types of light resources is different. The color rendering is also an important step for

lighting decorative design, for it directly affects the decorative effect and the light basic brightness.

■ Natural light

In different time frame or for the light that comes from the different artificial light resource, the color temperature is

different. Below is the color temperature reference data of the natural light and commonly used artificial light resource.

Warm color light

The color temperature for the warm color light ranges from 2700K to 3500K. The warm color is similar to that of

incandescent lamp, with majority color of red, which could create the feeling of warmth, health and comfort and suitable to

be used in the family, residence, dormitory and hotel as well as the place with low-pitched temperature.

Neutral white

The color temperature ranges from 3800K to 4500K. The neutral white could create a feeling of cheerfulness, comfort,

serene, which is suitable to be used in the store, hospital, office, restaurant, dining room and waiting room, etc.

Cool white light

It is also called natural light, whose color temperature is above 5300K.The light source is close to natural light and its bright

feeling could make people concentrated. It is suitable to be used in the office, meeting room, classroom, drawing room,

design office, the library reading room and showcase, etc.

The ability to reproduce the colors of various objects faithfully is called colour rendering properties. In principle, artificial light should be the same as natural light and be capable for eyes to distinguish the color of objects.Color rendering index represents the evaluation of colour rendering properties of lamp. Higher color rendering index,then better colour rendering properties.

2.Shielding angle

It refers to an angle, between the outer edge of lighting emitting part of lighting source and center of the

lighting source. In normal vision condition, in order to prevent glare caused by high-brightness, lighting

should to be placed to have a protection angle of 10°-15°. For these areas where needs high lighting quality,

protection angle should be 30°-45°.

6.Requirements for preventing the glare

(1)Glare

Glare is an interference with visual perception caused by an uncomfortably bright light source or reflection. Two major types of glare：

direct glare and reflected glare. Glare is an important factor affecting lighting quality.To reduce glare,firstly, we should consider glare

during lighting design.Secondly, we need to choose right lighting. During lighting design,below requirements needs to be taken into

consideration: In-direct lighting, hiddening lighting source, adding lighting cover, using soft lighting materials, etc.

Most places need to reduce cover to prevent shadow on target object. To reduce or prevent shadow, We can

use diffusive lighting, or consider it during lighting design. But in some places such as department store, art

museum, exhibition hall,etc need third dimension, because of this, we need to create proper shadow effect

during lighting design. Shadow is caused by light emit to different directions. There are different types of light

directions such as down light, up light, auxiliary light, rear light, diffused light.

Illuminating economy is one of the important index of economic effects of lighting technology,which

1. Characteristis of light source

(1) Light failure

Refers to ratio between light emitting and original light emitting during lighting put in use. Take energy saving lamp as an

example, when it put in use for up to 5000 hours, light emitting from the light only is about 50% of the original light emitting.

We usually use “Lumen” to describe light failure.


(2) Average life

Average life also called rated life, refers to number of lighting hours of a group of lamps used until half of them broken.

(5) Heat Dissipation

To solve heat dissipation is the core issue of LED lighting design.

(6) Dissipation area

Thermal Resistance also related with head dissipation area, bigger heat dissipation area, better heat dissipation.

(3) LED life time

If the working temperature of LED chip is too high exceed chip junction temperature, LED life will be

dramatically reduced.

(4) Thermal Resistance

Thermal Resistance reflects the overall performance of heat conductive material. It is unit is , in other word, if material’s

rated power is 1W, temperature difference between two ends. Conductivity varies by different heat conductive materials, each

kind of material has its heat transfer coefficient. The bigger coefficient, the better heat conductivity. The total thermal

resistance refer to the total sum of each LED resistance, it is not only affected by each layers’heat transfer coefficient, but

also depends on compactness of each layer. If the layers are not compact, heat transfer efficiency will be reduced.
