So who wouldnrsquot want to own asailboat This is the question I

ask myself somewhat bitterly as Iclimb back into my bunk at 500 inthe morning the second time I wasup checking our anchor set becausethe wind shifted It started at 1230am when I had been wrenched froma sound sleep knowing somethingwas different The anchorage thatwas peaceful when I went to sleephad a screaming northwest windblowing through This time I laidthere for a few minutes waiting andhoping that Jim would feel it andwake up But either he was soundasleep or doing a good job of fakingit So I got up and checked the anchoragain and determined that our swingwas safe and we werenrsquot draggingAs I wrapped back up in the V berthI was feeling pretty sorry for myselfBefore drifting off to sleep again Istarted counting my grievances Thefirst five days of our two week sail-ing vacation had not gotten off to agreat start First there were battery

issues necessitating the replacementof our house bank of batteries Thenthere was the broken shackle and themangled sail slide and the broken

reef point and the collapsing boathook along with an autopilot thatwhen turned on caused the boat toturn sharply and unexpectedly to portor starboard With this inventory inprogress I drifted off to sleep again

My husband Jim our friend Johnand I had left Bayfield late onTuesday night hoping to make it toIsle Royale We had tried to set sailearlier in the day but forecasted badweather kept us in the marinaFinally at about 8 pm Jim and Johncould no longer stand my taunts andcalling my bluff said it was time togo Lack of winds meant we had tomotor as we headed into the NorthChannel and made our way pastMadeline Island but we werenrsquot wor-ried we would just use the autopilotWell at least that was the plan but theAP had other ideas I steadiedEmmanuel on her course and thenturned the AP from standby to autoWhat a surprise when the APslammed us into a hard turn to port

and of course I canrsquot turn off the Autobecause the wheel is spinning and Icanrsquot get my hand in between thespokes to shut it off Finally I am ableto stab the little button and turn theboat back to the original heading andcatch my breath Jim looks at me andasks what the heck happened I shrugmy shoulders and say letrsquos try it againso we did Again steady the boat onher course turn on Auto and whamhard turn to starboard this time Morefrantic efforts on my part to reach theoff button and regain control of theboat once more By this time Jim andI are a bit shaken and utterly at a lossso we resign ourselves to hand steer-ing Not a happy thought We haveover 80 miles and 12 hours to go andsomeone will have to be activelyhelming it all the way Oh wellSailing teaches you to be flexible wetell each other so wersquoll adjust It wasfull dark by the time we passed thenorthern tip of Madeline and roundedStockton to port and it was prettycool being out there in the dark all by

ourselves I made a fresh pot of cof-fee and Jim and I sat in the cockpitchatting while John tried to get somesleep below Since our visibility isgreatly reduced I am now keenlyaware that I am sailing betweenStockton Island to port and Michiganand Outer Island to starboard ButIrsquom not worried for I have radar andGPS Who needs stars to guide me Ihave technology (Note to self - afterinstalling a hideously expensive newradarchartplotter MFD take the timeto learn it before expecting it to guideyou through a night sail with littlevisibility you doofus) I canrsquot for thelife of me figure out how to steer thecourse I have laid in I try followingthe little cursor and the dotted blackline on the screen I make a 30 degreeturn to starboard and Jim pops out ofthe cabin ldquoEverything okay Honrdquohe asks I smile and say cheerfullyldquojust a little course correction noproblemrdquo A few more minutes passand Irsquom confused again This timeitrsquos a 45 degree turn to port Jim pops

his head out of the cabin again with aquizzical look and I give him thethumbs up A few more minutes goby and I turn hard to starboard againThis time Jim returns to the cockpitasking me ldquoAnother course correc-tion Dearrdquo Just a minute later Johnlumbers out of his berth and up ondeck and asks what the heck Irsquomdoing By now I am thoroughlydemoralized and I turn the helm overto the men and seek refuge belowwith my paper charts All this elec-tronic stuff has my head swimming Ican hear John and Jim conferring inthe cockpit trying to figure out theproblem with the autopilot I jointhem shortly thereafter and we try topuzzle out the radar and chartplotterbut we are no match for the little graybox John and Jim point out that weare all tired wersquore having equipmentproblems and we have no good rea-son to press on to Isle RoyaleNothing kills cruisers like trying tostick to a schedule so we decide toturn back There is enough light from



the quarter moon that we are confi-dent we can get back to Julian Bayand get the anchor down Itrsquos aboutmidnight by the time we are settled inand while John and Jim head for thecabin and some sleep I find myselfheld on deck spellbound As fasci-nating as I find the Apostle Islands tobe during the day nighttime has astrange allure for me which probablygoes back to my childhood when Iloved to sneak out of the house Inpajamas and bare feet I would wan-der the neighborhood in the weehours of the morning loving how dif-ferent how foreign and mysteriousthe things I knew in daylight seemedin the dark of night I have alwaysbeen a bit of a night owl and I lovebeing up when the rest of the world issleeping I sit on the bow pulpit seatfor a long time until fatigue wins outand I go to bed

Wednesday arrives with lots ofsun and wind so we head out ofJulian Bay and turn to port Ourcourse which takes us northwestwith wind out of the north at around20 knots means some hard upwindsailing as we pass Cat Island to star-board with Manitou and Ironwood to

port By early afternoon we are draw-ing near to Devils Island and thewind while staying off the starboardbow is now sending big rollers rightat us from the open lake and we starttaking the 4 and 5 footers on thenose While Emmanuel our 1995Hunter Legend 405 has no trouble

staying on her feet in these condi-tions we decide we have had enoughfun and abandon our plans for head-ing to Silver Bay We fall off and startto consider where we will spend thenight while I go below to assemblesome sandwiches for lunch on the goWe decide to head for RaspberryIsland and while on the way Johnfinally forces our Garmin 3210 chart-plotter to give up its secrets Finallywe have a basic understanding of itsmany screens There is much joyaboard Emmanuel as I pass aroundthe ham sandwiches At RaspberryIsland we tuck in behind the sandyspit and start to relax and Jim turnson the VHF to check the weatherwhen NOAA chimes in with thereport of winds switching to the NEafter midnight which makes ouranchor spot a bad choice Up comesthe anchor and we start our search fora good overnight spot The lowerwater levels this year make it chancyto tuck into Oak Island on either thesouthern side or the sandy spit on thesoutheastern tip We continue oursearch and eventually make our wayto Quarry Bay on Stockton Island I

find the whole thing dishearteningHere I was expecting to be in IsleRoyale and wersquore almost back wherewe started from By the time we getthe anchor down I am feeling some-what grumpy about the whole thingAbout that time Jim has the binocu-lars out and is inspecting the otherboats in the anchorage

ldquoHey Samrdquo he says ldquothere is aCatalina 36 over there by the name oflsquoOur Ladyrsquo isnrsquot that Marekrdquo heasks Marek was a fellow sailor wemet at Rocky Island and shared abonfire with a couple of years agoHe and his wife Dorado came to theUnited States from Russia back in theearly 1980rsquos We had struck up a con-versation that night because I havealways had a small interest inRussian history which was the resultof a fascination with AleksandrSolzhenitsyn the Russian novelistand historian back in high schoolSome moments live in your memoryforever and that night will always beone of them It was mid October andit was a cool evening There werethree sailboats that night at RockyIsland and the folks on Pendragon anabsolutely gorgeous Lord Valiantstarted the impromptu get togetherThe bonfire burned and Marek spokeand told stories of his life in Russiaand gave me the smallest peek intowhat the words Gulag and Purgemeant to those who lived through itAfter that night Marek and I stayed intouch by email but had lost contactwhen I left a previous position backin September of 2006

Now here we were almost 2 yearslater Jim hailed Our Lady whoresponded quickly We issued aninvitation to join us for dessert andcoffee which was accepted withalacrity

Jim John and I dined that nighton BBQ ribs with green beans andcorn bread A quick galley clean upby the boys and we were ready forour company I dug out my stash ofhomemade chocolate cupcakes and

made a pot of coffee Just then weheard the buzzing of an outboardheading our way and we went out tothe cockpit to greet our guests Thatnight Marek was accompanied by hislovely wife Dorado and their hand-some son Alex It was a happyreunion and we sat and talked untildark

Little Things Loom Big During anEmergency

1 2005 A beachside resident calledCoast Guard Station Muskegon onFriday afternoon reporting a sailboatfloundering off the beach north ofMuskegon Harbor Jay Mieras thereporting source reported that awoman on the sailboat was wavingher hands in the air

Within minutes the StationMuskegonrsquos 30-foot rescue boatbroke the pier head at MuskegonHarbor Four to five foot seas drivenby 20 knot winds greeted the CoastGuard crew as they pounded northtowards the sailboatrsquos reported posi-tion

ldquoWhen we approached the sail-boat I noticed a horseshoe flotationdevice trailing off the stern attachedto a tether linerdquo said Mike TappExecutive Officer StationMuskegon He added ldquoThis was notgood you had that feeling thatsomeone had gone overboardrdquo

Chief Beatty coxswain aboardthe 30-foot rescue boat approachedthe sailboat ldquoA female was holler-ing that her husband had fallen over-board but she didnrsquot know whererdquosaid Chief Beatty

Chief Beatty conducted severalquick shoreline searches of the areathat yielded negative sightings Thesituation was not good a person inthe water and sailboat being quicklydriven towards shore and its soleoperator unable to control the craft

Now what Do you look for thehusband or do you save the womanand the sailboat Fortunately the sit-uation resolved itself A ldquoGood

Samrdquo Jim Homan 61 had spottedthe floundering craft from shore andhe and a buddy grabbed a two-per-son kayak and reached the sailboatjust as the Coast Guard finished itssecond search of the shoreline

Being an experienced sailorHoman took control of the sailboatallowing the Coast Guard crew tocontinue the search

But whereLocating a man in seas glazed

over by white wind whipped spraydid not look promising for the poorsoul in the water Tapp discoveredfrom Homan that the sailboat carrieda hand-held GPS Homan passed the

GPS to Tapp Chief Beatty com-menced searching while Tappworked the handheld device Aftertwo minutes of punching keys andbeing bounced about he tapped intothe track line the sailboat had fol-lowed ldquoI could see where thestraight track line ran askewrdquo Tappfigured that is where the man wentoverboard as his wife began tackingto recover him Tapp placed a cursormarker where the track line endedand bingo the GPS offer the latitudeand longitude of where the man hadgone overboard

Chief Beatty passed the coordi-nates to a Coast Guard helicopteraircrew who had joined the searchWithin minutes the aircrew spottedthe man in the water wearing abright international-orange life jack-et Meanwhile Chief Beatty hadtransferred Tapp and SeamanBenjamin Cuddeback over to aMuskegon Sheriffrsquos boat that hadpicked up the man along with aGood Sam Tapp said ldquoThe manwas shivering uncontrollably Hislips were bluerdquo

Tapp and Seaman Cuddebackremoved his wet clothing andapplied their own body warmth bydirect body-to-body contact with theman as the sheriff boat raced to theCoast Guard moorings and an await-ing ambulance

Boat Smart Brief Richard Coanage 67 was released the followingafternoon from MuskegonrsquosHackley Hospital His core bodytemperature when admitted was 86degrees There is no doubt that thelife jacket saved his life He had

been in the 61 degree water for nearly two hours He latertold me the reason he wore the life jacket is because hiswife Robin insisted on it God bless her

He told me he had moved forward on the deck toadjust the main sail and the boom swung over andbumped him backwards and over the handrails His wifestarted the engine but its gears wouldnrsquot engage MrCoan said that when he departed White Lake Harbor aturnbuckle device on the gear linkage had fallen off andthus he couldnrsquot engage the gears

Mrs Coan made several attempts to recover her hus-band but the sailboat drifted away She had tossed overthe horseshoe life ring but failed to untie it from the boatShe couldnrsquot luff the main sail to take out the windbecause it would require leaving the tiller and going for-ward to the foot of the mast to release the sail Itrsquos thesame reason she didnrsquot call for help over the marineradio again fearful of leaving the tiller and placing the35-foot six-ton Erickson sailboat broadside to the windand a possible knockdown In dire straights she sailedfor shore hoping to attract attention which she did

Mr Coan admitted it was the little things that nailedthem when the gear linkage device fell off he shouldrsquovereturned to White Lake and repaired it in calm water Hehad recently switched the boom sheets on the main fromcontrol from the tiller to the foot of the main whichrequired leaving the tiller to luff the main sail ldquoHad Ithought this through I would not have changed the boomsheetsrdquo said Mr Coan

As for the life jacket I advised him to purchase a sig-nal mirror and whistle a day and night flare and a strobelight Twice the helicopter had passed nearby but failedto see him in the wind swept sea Mr Coan admits thatitrsquos the little things that loomed big when the unexpectedvisited Thanks to a life jacket the little things didnrsquot addup to the final tally

A Related ConcernIn another matter that relates indirectly to the

above case the Coast Guard along the eastern shore ofLake Michigan has experienced a rash of unmannedboats adrift During one case the Coast Guard spentseven hours tracking down the owner Coast Guardofficials urge boaters to place permanent ID mark-ings on these small watercraft and secure them to afixed object How does this relate indirectly to the life-saving case Coast Guard resources couldrsquove beenelsewhere tracking down an adrift derelict and notimmediately available when time was of the essencesearching for Mr Coan As stated itrsquos the little things

One thing you can say for sureabout the wind direction is that

itrsquos always changing Even when itseems like a nice steady day thewind is constantly wriggling backand forth at least a little bit Andwhenever the wind shifts it creates alarge opportunity to gain distance onthe other boats in your fleet

One common cause of changes in the wind direction is the presence of landnear the race course The wind encounters more friction when it flows over thebumpy contours of land and this often affects its direction The degree of changeis influenced by your proximity to shore (the closer you are the bigger the shift)and by the angle of the wind to the shoreline

Sail toward the next shift

When the wind direction ischanging your basic strategicmove upwind is to sail in thedirection where you expect thewind to shift next For exam-ple if you think the wind willveer (shift clockwise) sail onport tack toward that shift (andvice versa)

By doing this you will endup on a higher ldquoladder rungrdquowhen the wind shifts andtherefore you will be moreadvanced in the race Ofcourse there could always bereasons (eg current windpressure) when it might pay tosail away from the next shift

bull When making a strategic planfor your windward leg the relativeimportance of windshifts willdepend on several factors

- In light air windshifts are lesscritical wind pressure and currentare more important

Geographic effectsWhen the wind is blowing from the land at an angle to the shoreline it tends to shift

in direction so it flows more perpendicularly off the land This effect is more pronouncedas you get closer to shore Usually if you sail the tack that takes you more directly towardland you will get progressively headed as you approach the shore This ldquogeographicshiftrdquo is like a basic persistent windshift but it is easier to predict because it usually hap-pens in the same place and to the same degree (so be sure to check this out before yourrace)

If the wind is blowing straight off the shore it will act like an oscillating breeze solook for more frequent and substantial back-and-forth shifts closer to land

bull Windshifts almost always fallinto one of two categories - they areeither oscillating (shifting back andforth around a median direction) or

persistent (changing steadily in onedirection) If you want strategic suc-cess you must constantly ask your-self one simple question during eachwindward leg Is the wind directionoscillating or persistent

The way you answer this ques-tion will make a huge difference inhow you play the shifts For exam-ple if you think the wind is oscillat-ing and you get headed you shouldtack But if you think the wind is

shifting persistently you shouldkeep sailing into the shift

bull Sometimes what appears to bea wind shift is really a change inwind velocity not in its direction Ifyou are sailing along and the windvelocity suddenly drops (withoutchanging direction) your apparentwind will shift forward temporarilyand it will seem like yoursquore headed

Be careful not to treat thisldquovelocity shiftrdquo like a real change indirection If you suspect a change invelocity wait 30 seconds or so andsee if the lsquovelocity shiftrsquo disappearsonce your boatspeed adjusts to thenew wind velocity

bull Windshifts are different everyday Sometimes itrsquos very easy to seethem on the water other times itrsquosimpossible Sometimes when a shifthits your boat it is solid right awayother times you have to sail fartherinto the shift to make sure itrsquos real

When you are trying to make agameplan to take advantage of theshifts there is nothing as valuable assailing around in your race areabefore the start just watching (andrecording) what the wind is doing

The influence of cloudsAnother reason why the wind changes direction is the presence and move-

ment of clouds The bigger the cloud the more potential there is for associatedwindshifts Usually the wind on the downwind side of a cloud lsquofans outrsquo in frontof the cloud (and itrsquos stronger too) Therefore itrsquos usually good to sail towardclouds For example if there is a big dark cloud coming down the left side of thebeat sail that way because the cloud will probably shift the wind direction leftuntil it passes

When you are sailing in a thermal ldquosea breezerdquo the wind direction usuallychanges slowly as the temperature of the land increases or decreases during the dayWhile the land heats up in late morning and early afternoon the breeze builds instrength and gradually shifts (often to the right) toward the standard lsquoseabreezedirectionrsquo for that venue Then in the late afternoon after the warmest part of theday the land starts cooling and the wind shifts back the other way (decreasing instrength)

Thermal breezes are great examples of persistent shifts However as theseabreeze develops it doesnrsquot always shift constantly in the expected direction Asthe graph above shows there are often some small oscillations as the wind settles inWhile these shifts may not be significant on a long beat they can make a big dif-ference strategically to boats that usually sail short windward legs

beginningI guess you could say this story

began with a high school friendnamed Steve Johnson He had a dream

that was sparked by another sailingadventure the voyage of the Dove Inthat story a teenage boy sets out on ajourney around the world On his waythe boy becomes a young man Healso meets his true love When the

journey is done the two lovers sail offinto the sunset to enjoy a tropical par-adise Thatrsquos all it took That storysparked a fire that would burn foryears to come-not only in Steversquos lifebut also in the lives of many of thosearound him

Steve was a picture of the youthfrom the hippie days of the late 1960sand early 1970s His long blonde hairlaid back lifestyle as an artist and signpainter and his seeming lack of moti-vation to strike out on his own madehis family and friends wonder if hischildhood would last indefinitely

But along with that irresponsibleattitude Steve also had a certaincharm and talent In both his artworkand his sign painting he showed aremarkable genius that often madeyou overlook his weaker attributesOne would look with wonder at hislatest creation whether it was sculp-ture painting or billboard With thatsame artistry and style Steve set outto build his first sailboat

He made the new sailboat from anold wooden rowboat Steve made amast from two-by-fours which werecarefully shaped to not only be usefulbut also attractive He also addedartistic touches to the rest of the boatThe wooden rudder the bow and thesail boom all had his signature ofcraftsmanship For the crowning


work he named the boat the ChristineLouise after his girlfriend ChrisBurnis The boatrsquos name was paintedin Steversquos own unique style of letter-ing that Irsquom sure charmed Chris to noend Together the couple would sailthe waters of Indian Lake the lakewhere Steversquos parents raised him

This first boat of Steversquos markedthe beginning of a long line of sailboatownership that would stretch into thenext millennium And with Steversquosacquiring additional boats otherswould follow his passion The dreamof one hopeless romantic is often con-tagious Steversquos cousin Kevin wouldbe one of those who would follow thedream and the spark In pursuing hisown ldquoDoverdquo vision Steversquos passionfor bigger waves and bigger watermeant getting a bigger boat

Soon Steve with the help ofcousin Kevin would be working onanother boat the Clair Bastian Wellmaybe it wasnrsquot exactly his next boatActually the next boat was theChristine Louise II followed byChristine Louise III and then theClair Bastian Steve and Kevin wentin together on the purchase of the 26-foot Thunderbird sailboat Theybought the boat for $2000 from astate police trooper who lived inMunising The happy pair took theboat 45 miles south to Manistique toprepare it for their dream voyage

Together Steve and Kevin wereable to restore the old sailboat andgive her a whole new look Afterabout a year of preparation the twowere ready Their plan was to sailfrom Manistique Michigan souththrough Lake Michigan to Chicagoand then through various waterwaysdown the Mississippi River to theGulf of Mexico They would then sailto Florida and spend the winter thereon the boat After Steve convincedKevin to quit his job at the local papermill the two were ready to leave inthe fall

Kevin later told me ldquoIt seemedlike the thing to do at the timerdquo He

was referring to quitting his job Itprobably wasnrsquot the smartest thing todo But when therersquos a dream to fol-low and a sailboat to travel in reasonsometimes takes second place

As it turned out the pair did maketheir voyage It likely was the greatestadventure of their lives Somehowthis dream of Kevin and Steve wouldbe a spark And the spark would lighta fire And that fire would continue toburn in their hearts and in the hearts ofthose who were influenced by theirdreams As far as I know that fire stillburns to this day

Sailing NewsNOAA amp Smithsonian Say US WatersSafer From Invasive Species If ShipsFlush And Fill Ballast Water At Sea

NOAA and the Smithsonian released a technical reporttoday that finds ship captains can dramatically reduce thesupply of invasive aquatic species delivered to US portsif they flush and refill ballast tanks with ocean water beforearrival The report describes the effectiveness of ballastwater exchange procedures as a way to reduce aquatic inva-sive species discharged into US waters including theGreat Lakes and Chesapeake Bay

If ports are exposed to non-native species these organ-isms may establish themselves in the new habitat like zebramussels and gobies in the Great Lakes and potentiallycause harm to native populations of aquatic animals andplants An estimated 70 million metric tonsmdashroughly 50million gallons per daymdashof ballast water is discharged inUS water annually

ldquoResearch and development to produce alternative bal-last treatment methods and technology-based ballast treat-ment systems should continue to be pursued as a high pri-ority toward the reduction of organism transfersrdquo saidRichard Spinrad assistant administrator for NOAAOceanic and Atmospheric Research ldquoThis report assesseswhat is currently known about ballast water exchange andprovides analysis of its likely effectsrdquo

NOAArsquos National Center for Research on AquaticInvasive Species and Smithsonian Environmental Research

Center analyzed the delivery of ballast water to the GreatLakes and Chesapeake Bay These studies indicate reduc-tions in the risk of invasive species introductions as a resultof ballast water exchange The analysis provides furtherconfidence that overall there has been a decline in the riskof invasion from ballast water in these regions In additionthe report addresses a potential gap in the coastal ballastmanagement protection framework whereas ships travelingless than 200 miles from the US coast are not covered

ldquoMeasurements made aboard ships during normal oper-ations demonstrate that ballast water exchange when prop-erly conducted can be highly effective removing or killingapproximately 90 percent or more of the coastal planktonicorganisms from most ballast tanksrdquo said David Reid sen-ior physical scientist NOAA National Center for Researchon Aquatic Invasive Species ldquoSome residual coastal organ-isms may remain in ballast water after exchange and alsoin tanks with residual water and sediments both which maypose some invasion risk during subsequent ballast dis-charge

The boating industry claimed akey victory in the Senate with ballastwater legislation

US Senators Barbara Boxer D-Calif and Bill Nelson D-Flaunequivocally committed themselvesto resolve the issue before aSeptember 2008 permitting deadline

ldquoA recent court ruling has castdoubt on whether recreational boatersmdash people going out for a day of fish-ing or waterskiing mdash can continue tooperate without a permit from theEPArdquo Nelson said in a statementldquoTheyrsquove never been required to havesuch a permit and therersquos no reasonfor that to change You shouldnrsquot haveto ask the EPA before you take yourboat out on the waterrdquo

Environmental groups and severalstatesrsquo Attorney Generals successfullyargued in a US District Court caselast fall that ballast water should notbe exempted from government regula-tion as a pollutant because it intro-duces harmful invasive species intoUS waters Large ocean-going shipsuse ballast water for stability takingon water to weigh the vessel down

However the courtrsquos ruling alsoincludes boat-engine cooling waterbilge water gray water and commondeck runoff The court directed theEnvironmental Protection Agency todevelop what the NMMA says is ldquoacomplex and costly permittingschemerdquo for the nationrsquos estimated 18million boats by September 2008

ldquoI donrsquot think they should have toget these permitsrdquo said Boxer chair-woman of the Senate Environmentand Public Works Committee in astatement ldquoIrsquove committed withSenator Nelson to make sure we fixthis before that time We are going tomake sure that individual boaters donot need permits mdash thatrsquos as simple asit gets Thatrsquos my commitment and itwill happenrdquo
