TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Aug. 27 - Sept. 2, 2017

If anything interesting is happening in your

neighbourhood please inform Mambalam Times.

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC – 67The late 1930s was also the period of the Indian Freedom

Movement. Inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, PanditNehru and others, Nagaiah took part in the Movement. As adisciple of local Congress leaders like C. Duraiswamy Ayyangar,Madabhushi Ananthasayanam Ayyangar (this writer’s grand-uncle!) and others, he worked as volunteer for theCongress Party in many of its conferences and meetings. Withhis flair for music and theatre, he also took part in amateurtheatre associating himself with the political leader R. B.Ramakrishna Raju, a successful lawyer who was also inter-ested in theatre. (Later Raju became the Chairman of theMadras Legislative Council during the late 1940s.)

Tragedy seems to have been Nagaiah’s bedfellow. Early inlife, he was widowed, found life lonely and grief-stricken andwished to give up the game called life. Often he thought ofbecoming a sanyasi.

However, in order to make both ends meet, he began to workfor gramophone companies like Hutchins, Twin and others. Fora period, he is believed to have worked in the Bangalore officeof Hutchins as in-house music composer. He cut severalgramophone records, both classical and lightmusic. Some were classical compositions of Saint ThyagarajaSwamigal like, ‘ Sithaapathey naama nasuna’, ‘Nannu brovaneeku’ Even in those days, he made experiments in music, bringing in English lyrics in Telugu songs. One such disc,‘Marubaari’ became popular and the song had English lines like‘My lovely Lalana … I love you heart of hearts, sweetheart...!’and such!

He also played roles in drama sets of gramophone records like’Thulasidas’ and others. Anxious to improve himself and climbup the ladder, he visited the provincial capital Madras oftentaking part in Telugu plays staged at the Chennapuri AndhraMaha Sabha (CAMS).

CAMS, a popular cultural Association of Andhras in Madras, had been staging Telugu plays frequently with great success.CAMS then functioned – and still does - at the famous VictoriaPublic Hall, Park Town, Madras which was then a hive ofTelugu cultural activity. Nagaiah was part of the scene and, thanks to the association with that cultural unit, he developedacquaintance with a well-to-do auditor with a flair for fine arts.Their meetings would prove a turning point in his life, lateropening the doors for his entry into Cinema. Theauditor with artistic ambitions was Bommi Reddi NarasimhaReddi, destined to become one of the leading Indian filmmakersunder his professional name B. N. Reddi!

The Grand Old Man of South Indian Cinema, H. M. Reddi, came down to Madras shifting his operations from Kolhapur. In association with BN, he formed Rohini Pictures. Its firstventure in Telugu was ‘Grihalakshmi’ (1938, a family melo-drama built around traditional family values and their destruc-tion by alcohol and extramarital relationships.) Nagaiah hadearlier visited the Rohini Pictures office in the city and, whilehe was waiting in the reception hall to meetH. M. Reddi, much to his surprise, his CAMS friend BN walkedin.

Nagaiah had no idea that BN had entered films. However, theaccidental meeting between the two old friends led to Nagaiahgetting a break in films with a small role in the movie. Earlierhe had attempted in the city to break into films with no successand, thanks to his old friend, the tide turned at last.

In ‘Grihalakshmi’ Nagaiah played a minor role of a Gandhiansocial worker running a home for the poor and destitute towhich the heroine (Pasupuleti Kannamba), abandoned by herhusband sought refuge, solace and security. The film turnedout to be a fine success even in non-Telugu-speaking areas ofSouth India and the newcomer in the small role attractedconsiderable attention. His personality, actingtalents, melodious voice and singing skills impressed moviego-ers.

A song by him preaching prohibition, ‘’Lendu Bharathaveerularaa nidhura levandoy…!’ (Arise! Indian brave men!Awake from your slumber!) became a rage all over Andhra andeven elsewhere. Indeed, it was sung with gusto, if out of tune, even by reeling drunkards staggering home late at night!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Pavements misused for storing buildingmaterial

Sir, I am a resident of Chari Street, T. Nagar, whichabuts Ramakrishna Street and Vivekananda Street.

The police booth on Ramakrishna Street, near itsjunction with Vivekananda Street, is not effective.Under the very eyes of the police, the pavement nearthe booth is misused for storing building material likesand and bricks. On the opposite side, long casuarinapoles are heaped against the compound wall of abuilding. Since the last few days, a cow has been tied toa tree near the spot. It is not only dirtying the surround-ing, but its persistent mooing is causing a big nuisanceto the nearby residents. Similarly, debris has beenlying for several months on the pavement outside TVSApartments on Chari Street.

Will the officials concerned take immediate action toremove the encroachments? D. Ramalingam, B-4,TVS Apartments, 28, Chari Street, T. Nagar

Civic problems in Lakshmi StreetSir, Lakshmi

Street, WestM a m b a l a m ,which connectsLake View Roadwith Ellaiam-man Koil Street,is being misusedby nefarious ele-ments at night.

Empty liquorbottles and plas-tic cups can of-ten be found onthe road near itsjunction withPushpavath iAmmal Street.

The junction has been converted into an open urinalby passers-by. It is unhygienic and causes an offen-sive smell throughout the day.

Apart from that, piling up of debris and garbagepaves the way for proliferation of mosquitoes whichwill surely be responsible for viral attacks like dengueand malaria among the residents.

I appeal to Corporation officials to inspect the streetand take the necessary action for the benefit of theresidents. R. Lakshmi, Chari Street, WestMambalam

Barricades hamper pedestriansin service lane

Sir, When the authorities were demolishing ChennaiSilks building after the fire, to prevent any untowardincidents, the area around Chennai Silks was barri-caded, including the pedestrian pavement on the east-ern-side service lane of Usman Road, T. Nagar.

Even after the work has been completed and thedebris cleared, the barricade placed in line on thepavement has not been removed. As a result, thewhole length of the pavement is not available forpedestrians.

The service lane is already narrow and, with thebarricade and surging crowd, it becomes difficult towalk.

To add to the problems, the shop owners are alsoencroaching on the already narrowed pavement caus-ing further obstruction to pedestrians.

The Corporation officials should take immediatesteps to remove the barricades and prevent shopowners from encroaching on the pavement. K.Harihar, T. Nagar

During funeral rites police takeaway body for postmortemBy Our Staff Reporter

Moments after members of a family in T. Nagar garlandedthe body of a 37-year-old man during the funeral rites in theirhome in T. Nagar, they were shocked when policemen arrivedand took the body away for postmortem.

According to a police official, the family had lied to doctorsabout the cause of the man’s fatal injuries which were sus-tained in a road accident.

The victim, Deenadhayalan, met with an accident on Aug.12, while riding on his bike with his wife Anitha and their 3-year-old daughter.

According to eyewitnesses, Deenadhayalan lost control ofhis bike when he tried to avoid hitting a dog that suddenlycrossed his path.

The front wheel of the bike hit the pavement and all the threefell down. While his wife and daughter escaped with minorinjuries, Deenadhayalan hit his head against a stone. Herecovered immediately and reached home.

Sometime later he complained of severe headache and lostconsciousness. He was rushed to a private hospital wheredoctors pronounced him brain died and advised the family totake him to Rajiv Gandhi Govt. Hospital.

At the govt. hospital, they told the doctors thatDeenadhayalan had lapsed into an unconscious state afterfalling down at home. He passed away in the hospital on Aug.17.

“The hospital handed over the body to Deenadhayalan’sfamily members and they made arrangements for the funeral,”a police officer said.

When Guindy Traffic Police checked at the hospital andlearned that Deenadhayalan had died and no postmortem wasperformed, they went to his house in T. Nagar, where thefuneral rites were in progress, and took the body away forpostmortem amidst protests by the family members.

Amrutha Arunagiri, archi-tecture students of MeenakshiCollege of Engineering, K. K.Nagar, took up the task oftransforming an unused publicspace opposite Alandur MetroRail Station, close to thesubway and adjoining thepavement, to depict Fort St.George and its capture by theFrench in 1746.

They made caricatures onthe ground and used a verticalmirror to create an opticalillusion of the event.

They got permission from theofficials concerned toundertake the project.

A competition by NationalAssociation for Students ofArchitecture (NASA), whichasked students to take up anabandoned urban space andtransform it into a space idealfor a gathering, inspired thesestudents to take up theinitiative.

Construction material andother debris are dumped byChennai Metro Rail Limited inthe 120-sq. meter space.

The three students clearedpart of the land to create anillusion of the historical event.

Amrutha told MambalamTimes that the planning hadstarted in the 1st week of Juneand the project was completedon Aug. 19.

They utilized around 30 sq.meters of horizontal space todepict the event. They usedcasuarina poles, colour clothand other recyclable materialto make the caricatureresembling the Fort and twotrenches, one depicting armedFrench soldiers entering thecity from the sea and the othershowing British soldiersprotecting the Fort. They thenerected a huge vertical mirrorto reflect the caricatures madeby them on the ground.

Passersby could simply sitor lie down in front of the mirrorto view Fort St. George and thesoldiers.

“We raised Rs. 40,000 forcleaning, levelling and pur-chasing materials,” saidAmrutha.

They had permission todisplay the project for threedays and it was dismantled onAug. 22.
