• 1997: Dr. Teixeira, Dr. Berguer, Dr. Earle, Dr. Pleatman, and Dr. Asbun were individually travelling to Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Argentina to teach laparoscopic cholecystectomy
• SAGES adopted their program, now SAGES Go Global
Go Global• The goal: teach local surgeons basic laparoscopy
with laparoscopic cholecystectomy as the model
• Two surgeons undergo weeklong didactic and clinical training in laparoscopy including an introduction to FLS.
• Equipment was generously donated by industry including: Karl Storz Endoscopy and Ethicon endosurgery
Go Global• Dr. Victor Manuel Mureira de Costa – born and
raised in Cape Verde, trained in Cuba and the current Chief of Surgery at Agostinho Neto Hospital
• Dr. Jose Fragosso from Portugal who also trained in Cuba and currently works in Cape Verde
• Staff also receive training to support ongoing laparoscopy

• Identified a high rate of gastric cancer in cape verde
• For this reason, we reviewed the hospital’s endoscopic capabilities. Dr. Teixeira is returning in the future for endoscopy training.
