Safety Aspects of using Blackbox and CCTV
on Double Deck Buses
-
The Data Logger (the blackbox)
-
Objective
The Data Logger system provide exception reports and query tool on data, which can be used to :
- provide evidence for incident investigation;
- identify bus captain with erratic driving behaviour;
- diagnose transcient vehicle faults
-
Objective
It is a pro-active prevention system that we can:
- put more attention to bus captians who need to improve his/her driving style
reduce accident potential
save fuel
- take preventive vehicle maintenance
reduce vehicle breakdown

Data Storage and Collection
Bus Depot (regular: WiFi)WiFi network installed at bus refuelling area in depotWithin WiFi coverage, In Vehicle Unit (IVU) on the bus communicates with the Bus Depot Computer (BDC). Data Logger data uploads to BDC; parameters and software update patch downloads to IVU.The BDC in each depot transmits data to the main server database.
-
WiFi Antenna
-
Data Storage and Collection
Bus Depot (fallback: manual)The system supports manual upload
and download.Data Retrieval SD Card or USB flash disc is taken to the vehicle and plugged into the slot in the front of the IVU. The card/ flash disc contains specific commands that the IVU reads and follows to transfer the log data to the card/ flash disc from the IVUs internal storage.
-
Data Storage and Collection
The card/ flash disc can be unplugged and inserted into the main server via a PC. After upload, data retains in the IVU for 14 days before it is overwritten. If the IVU cannot be powered after the accident, the internal USB flash disc under the front panel can be taken out for retrieval.From the main server database, exceptional
and query reports can be made.
