Tripod Piling is labour intensive and physically demanding

Safety Precautions for Tripod Piling

Keep site surface clean and free from water and slurry.

Make sure legs are on hard stable ground and equally spaced.

Don't pull or drag anything, which is too heavy for you - get help.

Only trained and authorised personnel to drive dumpers and winches.

Keep well clear of tools when picking them up or laying them down.

Page 4: SAFE SYSTEMS FOR PILING OPERATIONSmitpolytechnic.ac.in/.../SEM-5/ACT/Pilingpresentation.pdfFollow your Company Procedure for climbing the legs, rigging snatch blocks and using leg

Only authorised persons to tip shells, keep rope parallel with shell body.

Don't leave casing caps suspended - brakes do fail.

Inspect ropes regularly, cut and serve or replace when required.

At all times, stand well clear unless you have a task to do. Make sure the winchman and the operative each know what the other is doing.

Keep others clear whilst you are working the hole, protect the hole when you are not.

Backfill the empty bore - always.

TEAMWORK IS SAFE WORK

Driven Piling Keep clear of all loads being hoisted.

Keep hands and feet clear when pitching casings or preformed piles.

Move machine clear of pile before working on the driven unit

Never work on or under a suspended hammer, lower it or use the safety bar (monkey pin).

Always wear ear protection whilst driving is in progress. Long exposure to loud noise damages hearing for life.

Wear eye protection when plumbing, setting rake or taking sets on concrete piles. Pieces of concrete dropping from heights can seriously damage eyes.

Make sure the driver can see you, or knows what you are doing at all times.

Page 7: SAFE SYSTEMS FOR PILING OPERATIONSmitpolytechnic.ac.in/.../SEM-5/ACT/Pilingpresentation.pdfFollow your Company Procedure for climbing the legs, rigging snatch blocks and using leg

Always use the safety harness and line when more than 2m above ground, unless you are on a fenced platform.

Don't put hands in danger when jointing piles or changing packings.

Always have a banksman when manoeuvring the rig, particularly during reversing.

Keep work area tidy avoiding trip hazards.

Use a sound wire sling when pitching piles, never use the lifting eye or hook alone.

Ensure smouldering timber does not catch fire.

Protect exposed re-bar, ie setting out pins, with cem-caps or similar.

ROTARY PILING

Always ensure rig is working on a firm and level platform.

Do not climb up on Vertical Auger / bucket for cleaning.

Always stand well clear of the Auger / bucket when boring and discharging spoil.

Maintain good access to and from the Panel at all times.

Place the gratings on the pile as soon as possible.

BORING OPERATION BY ROTARY RIG

Page 27: SAFE SYSTEMS FOR PILING OPERATIONSmitpolytechnic.ac.in/.../SEM-5/ACT/Pilingpresentation.pdfFollow your Company Procedure for climbing the legs, rigging snatch blocks and using leg

Keep people away from Pile, always protect if left unattended.

Always ensure cages are slung correctly when being inserted in the Panel.

Keep fingers and feet well clear when inserting cages.

Pile less than 750mm in diameter must never be entered.

When it is necessary to enter a Pile special precautions must be in force.

Ropes and slings are subject to heavy wear, inspect frequently and replace as necessary.

Guarding and Clean of Grab

Whilst boring is in progress, ensure that the Banksmen is provided with Safety harness tied up with rigid body away from Crane. Make sure build up of spoil does not erode the distance

Page 30: SAFE SYSTEMS FOR PILING OPERATIONSmitpolytechnic.ac.in/.../SEM-5/ACT/Pilingpresentation.pdfFollow your Company Procedure for climbing the legs, rigging snatch blocks and using leg

A controlled zone must be established. This is defined as the area around the slew area at the back of the rig and which includes the Pile and around the spoil heap. From the front of the rig the zone extends beyond the bore and spoil heap by two metres. Only the banksman will normally be within the controlled zone, and will be in charge of any other persons who need to be there.

The demarcation of the controlled zone will depend on the circumstances. As a minimum, the area will be demarked by ropes and pins, where the piling contractor has sole possession of the site. Where ground workers or other trades are working nearby, the demarcation may be crowd type fencing or “Heras” fencing. Separation from the public will require a full site hoarding.

Page 31: SAFE SYSTEMS FOR PILING OPERATIONSmitpolytechnic.ac.in/.../SEM-5/ACT/Pilingpresentation.pdfFollow your Company Procedure for climbing the legs, rigging snatch blocks and using leg

The loaded Augur must be slewed close to the ground in a controlled manner.

The Banksman is in charge of operations in the controlled zone. He must be a trained CTA Slinger Signaller and have receive one day’s safety training in the past 12 months and be clearly identified.

REMEMBER

LUMPS OF CLAY ARE AS HEAVY AS CONCRETE AND CAN CAUSE INJURY IF SPUN VIOLENTLY FROM THE AUGER. TAKE CARE AND KEEP IN CONTROL.
