SAE International is a global body of scientists, engineers,
and practitioners that advances self-propelled vehicle and
system knowledge in a neutral forum for the benefit of
society.
SAE International is a not-for-profit, non-lobbying
technical organization and membership association with
138,000 members in over 100 countries.

There’s more to SAE Standards than meets the eye!
Standards are so pervasive in our lives,
we overlook the basic value they provide.
Behind the scenes, standards make
everyday life work.
They provide rules, guidelines, or
characteristics for activities or their
results. They coalesce markets. And,
they save organizations money.
Standards…
• Enhance health, safety and quality of life
• Facilitate global trade and market access
• Support product reliability and quality
• Reduce costs, improve supplier relations
• Guide business communications and marketing
• Advance innovation and new technologies
• Support regulatory goals and compliance
• Transfer technology to the marketplace
The Role of Standards in our Everyday Lives 3
SAE International standards do all of the above specifically for mobility
engineering, that is, self-propelled vehicles such as aircraft, automobiles,
trucks, construction and agricultural vehicles.

Standards are everywhere.
“Standards, in one form or another, have always underpinned
trade and business. Standards, including codes of practice and
guides as well as formal standards, support compatibility and
drive down costs through use of common parts, specifications
and methods.
They can also help open markets, create new industries and
realize the potential of new technologies.
Standards are so much a part of our daily routine that we use
them without even being aware of doing so, and without giving
thought to how they are created or the benefits they provide.”

Standards are all around us and are used continuously.
Everyone is familiar with standard units of measure. Length, weight, temperature,
and time all follow a standard convention to ensure commonality and a common
reference.
• The familiar International System of Units (SI) is part of the International System of
Quantities (ISQ).
– The ISQ is defined in the ISO/IEC 80000 family of standards.

Practically all products we use are designed to standards and are
tested to conform to standards.
• Textiles – clothing, bedding
• Furniture, cabinets
• Household appliances
• Building materials
• Plumbing
• Cars
• Electric distribution
• Information technology devices
• Toys
• Safety equipment
• Aircraft
• Petroleum
• Signs and symbols
• Terminology, language, communication

SAE International Aerospace Standards enable safer and more
efficient air travel.
Approximately 1800 SAE
International standards are
used in the development of a
typical airliner.
The first aerospace standard
was written in 1916.
Today there are over 8500
active aerospace standards
and over 17500 historical
standards in circulation.

SAE International writes standards for aircraft – for all facets inside
and out.
The SAE SEAT Committee addresses the seat, the occupant
restraint system, the interface of electrical and entertainment
system components with the seat, and the seating system
interface to other parts/aspects of the aircraft. Examples:
• AS8049B Performance Standard for Seats in Civil Rotorcraft,
Transport Aircraft, and General Aviation Aircraft
• AS8043B Restraint Systems for Civil Aircraft
The SAE A-20 Aircraft Lighting committee addresses aircraft
lighting equipment– design, manufacture, operation,
maintenance, and in-service experience. Example:
• ARP378: Passenger Reading Lights
The SAE A-10 Aircraft Oxygen Equipment committee addresses
aircraft oxygen equipment–design, maintenance, and in-service
experience. Example:
• AS8025A Passenger Oxygen Mask

SAE International writes standards for aircraft deicing, an operation
which has been seen by air travelers worldwide.
The SAE G-12 Aircraft Ground
Deicing is dedicated to
creating, preparing, and
maintaining all relevant
specifications, standards, and
requirements for aircraft
ground deicing systems.
Examples include:
• ARP4737 Aircraft Deicing/Anti-
Icing Methods
• AMS1428G Fluid, Aircraft
Deicing/Anti-Icing, Non-
Newtonian (Pseudoplastic),
SAE Types II, III, and IV
• ARP5149b Training Program
Guidelines for Deicing/Anti-
Icing of Aircraft on Ground

While SAE International’s impact on the global history of the automotive industry is
undeniable, here are a few examples of its pervasive impact on cars.
SAE maintains over 3000
ground vehicle standards.
