11. Food Security in India

India is one among the few countries in the world having Government held stocks of food grains for meeting the requirements of natural calamities, ensuring price stabilization in case of crop failures and for providing food grains under Public Distribution System (PDS). Since Independence India has travelled a long way towards the crucial aspect of food security from being an importer of food grains to one of being self-sufficient in its requirement of food grains. While its food grains stock position though looks satisfactory with sufficient buffer stock, the paradoxical situation is that according to the Global Hunger Index 2015, India ranks 80th position in a group of 117 developing countries. This apart India’s hunger index score for2015 was 29.0 and the proportion of undernourished in its population was 15.2% (i.e. one in every 7 person during 2010-14) which indicate the gravity of a serious situation with which India is found to be sailing. Therefore, food security in India has to be seen in a broader context covering the various aspects like hunger, malnutrition, absolute poverty, addressing inefficiencies in the delivery channel, proper identification of beneficiaries so as to improve the overall living standards of the people and thereby getting rid of absolute poverty from the country. Thus, food security in short implies “Access of food grains by all people at all times to sufficient quantities of food to lead an active and healthy life”. Questions: 1. 12. Sustainable Development

The need of the hour is not just development, but eco-friendly development, that is, development endowed without the destruction of environment and over exploitation of its bountiful gifts bestowed to mankind. The 11th Five Year Plan has emphasized and advocated a development process that is environmentally sustainable. Since our natural resources such as water, land, and minerals are limited, their per Capita availability is actually diminishing because of rising population and also because of irrational exploitation of these resources. Therefore, a strategy that could not only preserve and maintain natural resources but also provide for an equitable access to those who do not have access to them was adopted with a firm belief that until and unless environment protection is brought to the centre stage of our policy formulation the desired result could not be achieved. Otherwise it was felt that what is perceived to be development may actually lead to deterioration in the very quality of life. Questions: 1. What do you understand by Sustainable Development? 13. Gender Discrimination

Gender discrimination is a universal phenomenon and it is attributed to several factors like economic, social, political and cultural taboos. Though the policy-framers, Government, civil society , social reformers, NGOs and feminist organizations are no doubt putting enormous eeffort to minimize gender discrimination but still it is continuing to be prevalent in both the developed and developing countries. However, the magnitude and degree of such gender discrimination keep varying from country to country. The gender discrimination in the Indian context is quite noticeable by virtue of the declining trend in female sex ratio, literacy level, employment avenues, income inequalities, wage differentials and property rights, etc. This is one of the biggest challenges facing India and unless it is addressed on war-footing basis it will have a cascading negative impact on the very growth and development path being pursued by iIndia since it has been proved universally beyond doubt that women are equal partners in the development process of any nation. Questions:

14. Health Care System

The general health care standard in India is quite low compared to many other countries around the globe. The basic cause for the poor health status of the large chunk of its population in India is its wide spread poverty. The Government of India has focused its attention on this vital aspect from time to time and had come out with various programmes and policies aimed at achieving an acceptable standard of good health amongst the general population of the

country. To name a few ,The National Health Policy 2002, The Common Minimum Programme, National Health Mission, Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surksha Yojana (PMSSY), Swachh Bharat Mission, Pulse Polio Programme, National Aids Programme etc. Yet, there is no denying of the fact that the progress in improving health outcomes in the overall quality of health care being extended to its vast population over the years is apparent though at a slow pace. But its wide inter - state, male-female and rural- urban disparities in outcomes and impact still continue to persist. Therefore, as a result India continues to face an extraordinarily high disease burden which saps the productivity of not only the present Indian working population and their contribution to its economic growth and development but also can have a cascading effect on the future generation as well.
