Welcome to the new season at Sadler’s Wells – Autumn/Winter 2016

Sadler’s Wells is a world-leading dance house – a place where artists come together to create dance and where people of all ages and from all walks of life come to experience dance. At the heart of Sadler’s Wells is a spirit of creative innovation and artistic collaboration. This is where dance and choreography meet art, design, music and theatre.

We present dance made today across a wide range of styles – from tango to hip hop, flamenco, ballet and cutting-edge contemporary dance – to audiences of over half a million people each year. We commission and produce original work for our stages and tour productions to arts venues around the world, as well as bringing the best of British and international dance to large audiences at our three theatres in London.

We support the development of dance artists and choreographers at every stage of their career. Our Associate Artists, resident and associate companies include the most exciting talents working in dance today. We also nurture the next generation of artists through research and development, and a range of programmes including the National Youth Dance Company, Wild Card, New Wave Associates, Open Art Surgery and Summer University. Our annual community, schools and creative learning programmes offer access to dance and opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part in high-quality productions and learning opportunities, both on and off our stages. This autumn, I am pleased to present Out of Asia 2, our second season offering audiences the opportunity to experience outstanding dance coming from the region. You can enjoy 8, the latest piece by TAO Dance Theatre, as well as a new work by dancer and choreographer Yang Liping, based on Lilian Lee’s novel Farewell My Concubine. Cloud Gate 2 presents a triple bill showcasing the next generation of dance makers from Taiwan, while the National Ballet of China performs in enduring love story The Peony Pavilion. In addition to the performances, our foyer hosts an installation by artist, performance maker and designer Choy Ka Fai, as part of his project SoftMachine. Travelling across five Asian countries to meet contemporary choreographers, Ka Fai has created a nuanced and insightful portrait of the status of dance in the region through a wealth of portraits, interviews and documentary films. Looking at dance made closer to home, some of our Associate Artists bring brand new work to our stage: Jasmin Vardimon reimagines the story of Pinocchio, Akram Khan premieres his version of Giselle, created for our Associate Company English National Ballet, and Michael Keegan-Dolan relocates Swan Lake to an Irish setting. Making her Sadler’s Wells debut in September is dancer and choreographer Sharon Eyal. Her high-voltage, expressive piece, created with collaborator Gai Behar, references club culture through the combination of a live, electronic score and energy-filled choreographic language.

Finally, over the Christmas period I am delighted to have our Resident Company New Adventures perform in Matthew Bourne’s glamorous new show The Red Shoes, based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

The world-famous and world-class dance company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, returns to Sadler’s Wells for the first time since 2010 with an exhilarating showcase of dance. Celebrating nearly 60 years of unparalleled artistry, Ailey’s trademark technical brilliance and passionate energy bring audiences everywhere to their feet every night.

Programme A includes the UK premiere of the uplifting Exodus, along with Four Corners and Christopher Wheeldon’s haunting After the Rain Pas de Deux. Highlights of Programme B include Open Door, set to recordings by Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and Paul Taylor’s Piazzolla Caldera: a sensual exposé of tango reimagined with modern dance. Sadler’s Wells Debuts offer a chance to discover the work of choreographers new to the Sadler’s Wells stage. This season sees Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, stars of Israel’s thriving dance scene, presenting the London premiere of L-E-V. This piece is about love that always misses, or lovers out of sync. Eyal and Behar explore this space, viewing themes of the heart through the lens of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Performed to deep, pulsing, tribal grooves, this is a powerful display from the company’s fiercely talented dancers, inspired by Neil Hilborn’s text “OCD”.

Exploring the highs and lows of football and life itself, Home Turf is a compelling collaboration between West Ham United Foundation, Sadler’s Wells and a team of over 100 professional and non-professional dancers, including West Ham Foundation participants, Company of Elders and National Youth Dance Company alumni.

A team of international choreographers, including Pascal Merighi (guest artist, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch), Neil Fleming Brown (Studio Wayne McGregor), Michela Meazza, (guest artist, New Adventures), Lee Griffiths (The Company) and composer Murray Gold (Doctor Who and balletLORENT’s Snow White) have worked collaboratively to create a thought-provoking piece of dance theatre, uniquely reflective of its diverse cast.

Following the summer world premiere, Natalia Osipova returns due to popular demand, once again joined by Sergei Polunin in this unique opportunity to see the two dancing together in the UK.

Natalia Osipova is a major star in the dance world. She started formal ballet training at age 8, joining the Bolshoi Ballet at age 18 and dancing many of the art form’s biggest roles. After leaving the Bolshoi in 2011, she joined American Ballet Theatre as a guest dancer and later the Mikhailovsky Ballet. She joined The Royal Ballet as a principal in 2013 after her guest appearance in Swan Lake.

The programme, Osipova’s first ever commission, features new contemporary work inspired by this unique dancer from Sadler’s Wells Associate Artists Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant, alongside Royal Opera House regular Arthur Pita.

Thursday 29 September

What will change, if and when science discovers how our minds arise from our bodies? Choreographer and performer Matthias Sperling furthers his investigation into the relationship between mind and body in a new performance lecture exploring a hypothetical future in which that connection is clarified.

How will dance and choreography be expanded by this new understanding of the body? And how will our society be altered? This work of science fiction builds on recent findings, taking a choreographic perspective to freely imagine plausible, absurd, thrilling or worrying scenarios.

Sperling took part in Sadler’s Wells Summer University and is a regular collaborator with Siobhan Davies Dance.

Formed in 2008 by Beijing-based choreographer Tao Ye, TAO Dance Theatre is known for its mixture of art forms, including film and visual art, creating work that has a mesmeric, trance-like quality.

In the “high concept and thrillingly simple” (Evening Standard) 6, six dancers move in dynamic and hypnotising unison, in a shifting landscape of light.

Tao’s newest piece and the final section of the Straight Line Trilogy, 8, sees the eight dancers lie instead of standing, restricting their bodies to the floor and limiting their movements to the range of their spines.

Unknown Pleasures is an intentionally provocative proposition. A completely anonymous programme – no names, no fame and no glory – just the chance to experience an evening of dance unencumbered by preconceptions.

Five international choreographers – four women and one man, ranging from their 30s to their 70s – share their distinctive voices to produce an evening of invention and surprise. Performed by 20 dancers from CCN Ballet de Lorraine, this is a choreographic carte blanche for both audiences and creators.

Unknown Pleasures is curated by Dance Umbrella together with pioneering French company Centre Chorégraphique National - Ballet de Lorraine.

David Bintley’s new ballet, The Tempest, conjures Prospero’s magical isle from Shakespeare’s late masterpiece into a spellbinding new work of ballet theatre. At once enchanting and elemental, this is a powerful story of a man determined to right past wrongs by all means in his power.

Birmingham Royal Ballet’s other programme is a stylish celebration of Shakespeare, presented during the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death. The Shakespeare Triple Bill begins with José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane, a thrilling one-act interpretation of the dramatic Othello, followed by The Shakespeare Suite, which sees Bintley set the Bard’s best-loved characters to a swinging Duke Ellington score. The evening ends with Wink, a new piece by Jessica Lang inspired by the poetry of the sonnets.

SoftMachine is a multimedia project investigating the contemporary status of dance across Asia. The first of two double bills in October created by Choy Ka Fai, this evening showcases some of the most interesting new dance and choreography emerging from India and China through live performance and documentary film.

Surjit Nongmeikapam is a contemporary dancer from Manipur, India, trained in classical Indian dance and martial arts. The performance presents the process of creating a new dance production for the consumption of a European audience, revealing artistic strategies, marketing ideologies and exploring the precarious practice of eroticising oneself.

XiaoKe and ZiHan from Shanghai make collaborative works exploring the body in its extremes, reflecting on the social and political context of China. The performance investigates the boundaries of artistic freedom and speculates on the experience of constant cultural surveillance.

One of China’s most respected and innovative cultural exports, The China National Peking Opera Company has staged more than 500 masterful historical dramas since its formation five decades ago.

Based on historical accounts of the Warring States period of ancient China, The General and the Prime Minister is filled with thrilling drama and entertainment. Set against an emotive backdrop of trickery, power struggles and personal determination, its influence continues to be felt in China today.

The Legend of White Snake is a famous piece of Chinese folklore, while its characters are household names in the country. In the long history of suppression and obedience before her, Lady White, one of the story’s key figures, is a symbol of rebellion, bravery and a quest for true love.

Jérôme Bel, the “choreographer dedicated to turning the concepts of dance and performance inside out” (Observer) returns following the success of Disabled Theatre in Dance Umbrella 2014 and The Show Must Go On in 2015.

Dance & Dialogue is a dual presentation of movement and words, illuminating distinctive artistic practice.

Dance: A trio between classical dancer Suzie Birchwood, an aerial artist and a contemporary dancer. The piece explores Suzie’s tempestuous relationship with her condition, generalised dystonia. The second work plays with notions of support and balance, exploring Suzie’s changing physicality during the cyclical patterns of her condition.

Dialogue: Suzie Birchwood brings together collaborators from her research process, specifically looking at how her neuroplasticity specialist has been working to revolutionise Suzie’s dystonia treatment. By revealing her shifting physicality, Birchwood aims to show that the disorder is a unique and changing aspect of her identity as a dancer.

SoftMachine is a multimedia project investigating the contemporary status of dance across Asia. The second of two double bills in October created by Choy Ka Fai, this evening highlights some of the freshest dance and choreography from Japan and Indonesia. Yuya Tsukahara is the leader of contact Gonzo, a contemporary dance unit based in Osaka. contact Gonzo creates encounters that teeter on the edge of violence and tenderness. This performance, bringing together live and film elements, is an attempt to decode the logics of this practice and to explore how someone becomes part of contact Gonzo.

Rianto is a dancer from Banyumas, Indonesia, who specialises in the traditional cross-gender erotic dance of Lengger. The performance explores the tension between traditional and contemporary choreographic practices during the global shift from rural to urban lifestyles.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Candoco Dance Company presents a double bill, following its acclaimed restaging of Jérôme Bel’s The Show Must Go On last year.

Alexander Whitley, a classically trained dancer and Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate, has become known for his strikingly physical and virtuosic choreography. In Beheld, seven dancers explore the possibilities and constraints of the space to consider how we look and what we see.

The evening’s second work, Set and Reset/Reset, is a restaging of landmark contemporary dance piece, Set and Reset, by Trisha Brown. This ground-breaking production is performed to a contagious score by renowned multi-media artist Laurie Anderson.

Wild Card invites a new generation of dance artists to curate special evenings and showcase their work. Hagit Yakira is an Israeli choreographer based in London whose work is attracting growing acclaim for her distinctive physical and emotional intensity, emerging from her fascination with stories, psychological experiences and emotions. In this Wild Card, Yakira invites audiences to experience her take on storytelling for a night of dance and choreography, inspired by her interpretations of femininity and her own real life experiences.

Alongside Yakira’s work there will be three specialists: a dance artist, a psychotherapist and a writer, who will reflect and react upon Yakira’s new work, Free Falling, looking at the conceptualisation of emotions in art.

Celebrated as one of the most original and ambitious talents working in contemporary dance today, Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s latest creation is inspired by the American philosopher Noam Chomsky, and features an all-male cast of dancers and musicians.

In what may be the last opportunity to see him on stage as a dancer, Cherkaoui explores the production and manipulation of information in contemporary society.

Originally created for the 40th anniversary of Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, this expanded version of the piece features five dancers with very different styles – circus, Lindy Hop, flamenco, hip hop and breakdance – with three musicians performing live.

Yang Liping is one of the most famous dancers in mainland China. Her work continues to combine and re-imagine the diversity of the country’s contemporary and ancient traditions.

Based on the classical story Farewell My Concubine, Under Siege is Yang’s first modern work as a choreographer, and is a more abstract piece than traditional narrative Chinese dance theatre.

Featuring set and costume by Academy Award-winning designer Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Akram Khan’s DESH) and lighting by 2013 Knight of Illumination winner Fabiana Piccioli, this work draws inspiration from Chinese opera, modern dance, martial arts, and hip hop. The historic tale is told through its distinctive characters and use of live music, creating a universally dramatic experience which transcends its Chinese roots.

The Royal Albert Hall and Sadler’s Wells present producer, songwriter, DJ, multi-instrumentalist and orchestral composer Nitin Sawhney in this one-off concert at the Royal Albert Hall following the release of his latest album Dystopian Dream. Sawhney, an extraordinary, distinctive and versatile musical voice, is joined by Joss Stone and a host of other special guests, including genre-smashing duo Honji Wang and Sébastien Ramirez performing new, specially-commissioned choreography. Sawhney has collaborated with and written for artistsincluding Paul McCartney, Sting, London SymphonyOrchestra, Anoushka Shankar, Ellie Goulding, Cirque Du Soleil,and Akram Khan and continues to tour internationally

As one of the UK’s most successful dance companies celebrates its 90th anniversary, these two programmes highlight the range and ambition of its work.

Contemporaries is three specially commissioned pieces from a new generation of dance-makers. They explore themes including work, migration, identity, society and art. It features pieces by Malgorzata Dzierzon, Patricia Okenwa and Alexander Whitley: emerging choreographers with unique perspectives on today’s world. Joseph Haydn’s The Creation is his masterpiece. Its lyrical arias and monumental choruses show off one of the greatest classical composers at the peak of his powers. Rambert’s new staging marries dance to this wonderful music, with Pablo Bronstein’s designs reflecting the wit and majesty of Haydn’s score. Mark Baldwin choreographs a cast of over 50 dancers, joined on stage by 70 singers and musicians for a performance on a truly grand scale.

The Royal Ballet’s Marcelino Sambé creates his first work for NEBT to the music of Nathan Halpern. The Royal Ballet’s Kristen McNally and Valentino Zucchetti return to choreograph new pieces, with Zucchetti featuring music by Rachmaninoff, performed live by emerging pianist Anne Lovett.

The sister company of Taiwan’s internationally celebrated CloudGate Dance Theater, Cloud Gate 2 presents the country’s most talented young dancers and choreographers. This hotly anticipated triple bill is the first time Cloud Gate 2 has performed in the UK.

Wicked Fish sees the dancers mimic a shoal of fish, as puzzle-like choreography competes with its complex score, while The Wall examines ideas of protection and segregation, highlighting the physical and mental barriers built around us. Cheng Tsung-lung’s Beckoning (pictured) focuses on how people can shift identities almost instantaneously, and creates a mysterious zigzag of body language with movements distilled subtly from Taiwanese street-dancing rituals that gives this abstract work a playful and poetic quality.

Visual artist and Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate Hetain Patel returns with his fifth show for the stage. Following international exhibitions and performances (Venice Biennale, Candoco Dance Company) this new one-man show builds on the critically acclaimed American Boy.

Playing provocatively with race, gender and identity, American Man imagines a not-too-distant-future where celebrity power and political correctness have reached new heights. A future where Barack Obama’s post-Presidential role is CEO of Apple, while Stephen Hawking and Oprah Winfrey shape policies.

Combining seamless vocal and physical impersonations with his characteristic wit and humour, Hetain presents a dystopian outlook on a world where personal freedom walks hand in hand with guilt.

The 16th century epic, The Peony Pavilion, is one of the most enduring love stories in Chinese literature. Originally performed as a Kunqu Opera in a 20-hour cycle, director and production designer Li Liuyi, as well as choreographer Fei Bo have redrawn it into a sublimely enchanting and pioneering two act fusion ballet that combines Western style choreography with traditional Chinese influences.

Premiering in 2008, the work has become a gem in National Ballet of China’s repertoire, and has received outstanding acclaim internationally. With an eclectic post-modern score that references Holst, Prokofiev and Debussy, and ethereal costuming, it is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, ears and emotions.
