Last month I spoke to a class of fifth grade children About homeless men and women.
The teachers are doing a class on ‘caring in our community’. They approached me since I have
been associated with Pine Street Inn. Well the children already knew a lot about homeless peo-
ple and they knew many reasons why people are homeless, and they children also know what these people needed to stop being homeless: Peo-
ple need homes, they told me. One young lady then asked me, “do you
do this for money or because you care?” She cut to the heart of the matter. This little work of
mine is one of faith, I am following Jesus direc-tion to “sheltering the homeless, feeding the hunger”.
I am exercising my faith.
Faith needs to be exercised, faith is like a muscle, if you don’t use it, you lose it. We can
not say “Lord, Lord” but not act. We have to practice this gift of faith. Today I’m giving you
this opportunity to use your gift of faith. We need you to help instruct our children in the
faith. Someone taught you. Now it is your turn to teach others of God’s care for them.
We need you to give us time to teach our
young people. Ms. Dot D’Amato and others are preparing for the fall classes. Give a call to the
rectory to volunteer or email me ([email protected]). Thank you.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the first reading, we hear that Abraham, saw three men standing nearby, “...he ran ...to
greet them” Not only did he greet them warmly, he provided water to bathe their feet, Sarah prepared a
meal, and he “waited on them”. We call this Radi-
cal Hospitality, an attitude that many parishes are intentionally adopting. We are all called to make
the strangers in our pews feel welcome. This may
mean stepping out of our comfort zone to assist a newcomer. Who is the stranger that God is putting
in your path today? How will you respond?
2019 Catholic Appeal After 15 weeks of the 2019 Catholic Appeal, Sacred Heart
Parish has raised 66% or $30,880.00 toward our 2019
Catholic Appeal goal of $46,563.00. A sincere thank you to
the 161 parish members who each have contributed an av-
erage gift of $175.00 thus far. To join our Parish-wide ef-
fort, please find an in-pew envelope at the back of the
Church or donate online at bostoncatholicappeal.org.

Day Of Prayer: Journaling My Journey
Presenter: Dottie Levesque Many young people keep a diary… a record of people seen, work accomplished and emotions ex-
pressed. Adolescence matures into adulthood and the diary becomes a journal. A journal is a com-
mitment made to self—to “God-in-me”. It is a prayerful method of putting words to one’s
thoughts Four styles of journaling will be present-ed. There will, of course be time for experimenting with each style.
9:15 am to 4:00 pm. Lunch included in the program.
Suggested donation $45 per person.
Today’s Liturgy
Today’s gospel is a tough one, particularly
if you want to heed Jesus’ message. Jesus (and most likely his entire entourage) visits Martha and
Mary. Martha attends to the needs of the visitors, probably constantly serving them food, while Mary sits around and listens to Jesus’ preaching.
Most of us want to commiserate with Martha’s griping, but Jesus says no.
The best comparison I can get from a more mod-
ern age comes from the 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s
Day Off. Cameron worries and worries about
everything in his life, while Ferris’ philosophy is
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look
around once in a while, you could miss it.” Now,
it’s not that Ferris didn’t care- he went to school
and was on the route to college- but he knew
when to stop and listen. Mary knew that it was
time to stop and listen to Jesus’ message. Perhaps
sometimes we get caught up in the rush of the
world around us. If we stopped in listened to
God more, we might get a better perspective on
things. Then, we can get back to work.

Sacred Heart School: A STREAM Innovator What is STREAM? STREAM is an integrated curriculum
encompassing Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering,
the Arts, and Mathematics. Scholars at Sacred Heart, from
Pre-School to 8th Grade, incorporate skills from each of
these areas in their work. In the spring, the school showcas-
es this effort in an all-school STREAM night, where each
grade presents collaborative projects that represent their
studies and bring together level-appropriate examples of the
various disciplines. The STREAM curriculum focuses on
critical thinking, a resilient learning through failure and suc-
cess, and collaboration—all skills for a 21st century citizen.
Come by and see what STREAM learning does for our
young scholars!

Sacred Heart Barbecue
When Sacred Heart parish was estab-lished in 1893, Father Cummins orga-nized an Ox Roast to raise funds to build the church building that still stand on the corner of Brown Avenue and Cummins (named for him!) High-way. This year to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the parish, we didn’t roast an ox; we roasted hot dogs and started to raise money to add an ele-
vator and accessible restrooms to the church.
Adriana Cillo and Bob Lepore led a committee to or-ganize a parish barbecue on Saturday, June 22. Over 250 parishioners came down to Sacred Heart School after the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday evening to enjoy sweet and spicy Italian sausage, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, 4 or 5 different kinds of rice provided by the vibrant Hispanic community of the parish, watermelon, ice cream, anniver-sary cakes, and finger-friendly (finger-licking?) desserts from many parishioners’ kitchens. Games, face-painting, a fire truck (that shot water from its hoses!), a police van (with new siren sounds heard for the first time!), music from Glenn Williams, and dancing rounded out the cele-bration.
Thanks to our community sponsors: Roche Bros our lead sponsor; Felipe Quintero from BJs our master cake chef; Tony’s Market; JP Licks; Boston Parks Depart-ment; Boston Fire Department; Boston Police Depart-ment. The support of all of these donors shows what an important place Sacred Heart parish holds in the Roslin-dale community.
Thanks to all of the committee members who worked be-hind the scenes—Mary Erwin, Caitlin Erwin, Becky Mo-kos, Isabel Dinzey, Elizabeth Santana, JoAnne Rudder, Sister Margaret, Pat Suhrcke—to organize the event. And thanks to all of volunteers-–too many to list!--who worked during the barbecue to make it a joyful celebra-tion of Sacred Heart’s 125th anniversary. Your willing hands are the most visible testament to the place that Sa-cred Heart holds in your hearts.
Please be aware! The RCAB IT Department has noted an increase in the number of phishing emails and text targeting par-ishes and parishioners in the Archdiocese of Boston. Phishing is an attempt by fraudsters to have you trans-fer money to them or purchase gift cards such as iTunes cards. These phishing emails use the pastor’s name for the sender and have some variant of the pas-tor’s name in the ‘from’ email address to give the im-pression it is being sent by the pastor. Please be aware that neither Fr. Kelley nor anyone at the parish would make such requests.

MISSION STATEMENT Rooted in the universal call to discipleship, the mission of Sacred Heart and St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Roslindale and Forest Hills is to preach Jesus Christ. Proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ takes many forms: preaching, wor-
ship, education, service, works of mercy, and evangelization. The staff and the congregation are guided by the overall mission to proclaim the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death in this time and place.
