A Word from Fr. Andrew

Dear Parishioners and Friends, We do not find him at the foot of the cross. He is not at the Garden of Gethsemane. Nowhere is he placed in the scene at the Last Supper. And although he suffered a martyr’s death and was beheaded, we never hear him referred to as an apostle or devout disciple of Jesus Christ. Yet he is counted among the Saints in our church and is hailed as probably one of the most prolific heralds of all time — St. John the Baptist! John the Baptist’s work began while in the womb. He leapt for joy as he experienced the salvific presence of God, in his cousin, Jesus. His entire life was taken up with proclaiming the coming of Jesus, the Christ, Savior of the world. He was the forerunner of Jesus. He prepared a way for Him. There were those who thought he was mad. A crazy man! And his most memorable encounter with the Christ came at the river Jordan when his cousin, Jesus, came to him to be baptized. And from that point on, the public recorded ministry of Jesus Christ began, and the presence of John in Scripture, save his beheading, became diminished. Like John the Baptist, it would be good for us to give glory and praise to God rather than to rest on our own laurels, or to praise ourselves for all that we believe we have accomplished on our own. In all things, let’s try our best to recognize the role that God is playing in the magnificent history of our lives, just as he plays in the salvific history of the world. Like John, and our mother Mary, may we recognize the greatness of God in all that we do, realizing that it is indeed, “not I...but the God in me!” Love, Fr. Andrew

FIRST FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Please be advised, we will not hold First Friday Adoration for the months of July and August. We will resume Eucharistic Adoration on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with Reposition at Noon. Thank you.

MAINTENANCE POSITION We are beginning the search for a full-time maintenance person for our parish. The duties are extensive, and the hours varied. Alan Angelini will continue to carry out his duties notably well, as he has, but it is becoming evident that we need someone on staff to fill the extensive hours and duties that one part-time person cannot humanly handle alone. This is particularly true in what is fast becoming an even more vibrant and growing parish. It is not an easy job and requires a specific skill set and a personality compatible with the giftedness of a church minister. Fr. Andrew, with the help of the Building and Grounds Committee, is in the process of drawing up a detailed job description. I’d ask that you please keep this endeavor in your prayers and, if you are aware of anyone who may be interested in discussing such a position, please contact Fr. Andrew directly.

FATHER’S DAY ENVELOPES In June of each year we honor our fathers, living and deceased, by observing Father’s Day. You will notice an envelope in your packet with spaces provided for the names of fathers that you would like remembered at Mass. These envelopes will lay upon our altar for the remainder of June, and those listed will be remembered in a special way at Mass throughout the month.

what an important part this raffle plays in providing for the future viability of programs, staff, and updates to our physical plant. All this lends itself to ensuring that Sacred Heart of Jesus will remain a vibrant parish. If anyone would like to sell additional tickets, please contact the parish office. Those who feel unable to afford the $100 ticket are encouraged to ask other family members or friends to chip in together—and of course share any winnings that may result. The drawing for the Cash Raffle is set for September 8, 2018. This summer we focus our major improvement fundraising on completing the church soffitt work and covering the areas with heavy enameled aluminum. We also want to start saving up for some extensive work that will be needed in our parking areas in the future.

MISSION CO-OP APPEAL Next weekend, June 30/July 1, Fr. Paul Ngaoni from the diocese of Imphal, India will be our guest . We ask our parishioners to be as generous as possible. The mission diocese of Imphal in Northeast India is home to 35 tribes of Mongolian origin. The first Catholic baptism was recorded in 1952. The Catholic population has grown to 100,000 now. The diocese has 45 parishes, and 5 Mission Centers, 160 priests including 82 indigenous tribal priests. The growth of the Church has always been accompanied by various challenges and persecutions during the past decades. Between 1990-2001, six of our young and dynamic missionaries were killed for witnessing the Gospel. Besides direct evangelization, the Church is actively involved in the everyday life of the people through other forms of apostolate like education, health care, self-help programs, rehabilitation of the sick, drug addicts and the orphans. Much remains to be done for this interior and underdeveloped region through your participation and generous support. In spite of the many challenges, missionary efforts are yielding an increase in vocations to priesthood and Religious life. The proceeds of the 2018 Mission Appeal will be used for training 25 Touring Catechists for the parishes. Your generous support and prayers will be of great help for the evangelization work in the Diocese of Imphal that began 70 years ago. Please welcome Fr. Paul.
