Dearest St. Joseph,at the word of an angel,

you lovingly took Mary into your home.As God’s humble servant, you guided

the Holy Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed Jesus as your own son

in the shelter of a manger, and fled far from your homeland

for the safety of both Mother and Child. We praise God that as their faithful protector,

you never hesitated to sacrificefor those entrusted to you.

May your example inspire us alsoto welcome, cherish, and safeguard

God’s most precious gift of life.Help us to faithfully commit ourselves

to the service and defense of human life—especially where it is

vulnerable or threatened.Obtain for us the grace

to do the will of God in all things.Amen.

Cameron Menghini received the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil in 2019. This is what she says about her RCIA experience:

“I have to say that RCIA was an amazing experience for me. I had a foundation, but RCIA taught me so much more and really enhanced my knowledge of the faith. I have learned so much and am excited for more. I loved the group of peo-

National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Live the LiturgyInspiration for the Week

“What God has joined together.” We are all familiar with these words. Because man and woman are essentially of the same substance, although also distinctively different, there is an innate desire to be connected and united. Admittedly, marriage covenants can be extremely difficult to negotiate and, at times, very painful to experience. But they can also be celebrations of great union and happiness. This is proven by couples who have been married for many years who still have that same twinkle of devotion in their eyes that was present on their wedding day. God designed it to be this way. By God’s power, the two become one. This is not of human design. The true intimacy of marriage is a Divine Intimacy. It is a bond created by a power far greater than any found in the two people who are joined. Marriage is where the virtue of love is most fully expressed.

If you or someone you know is suffering from suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide prevention Lifeline 800-273-8255 or text TALK to 741741. For more mental health resources call 913.647.3054 or visit https://archkck.org/special-needs/men-tal-health/

Mass of Innocents Have you or someone you know lost a child or loved one during pregnancy or in early infancy? If so, Archbishop Naumann invites you to commemorate this loss at a Mass on Sunday, October 24, at 1:00 pm, at Holy Spirit Parish in Overland Park, KS. This annual Mass gives parents, grandparents, siblings, or other loved ones the opportunity to receive consolation, whether the loss was recent or many years ago. Even if you have not personally experienced this kind of loss, you are invited to join us at this Mass to support those who have. For questions or more info, contact Brad DuPont at 913-647-0301 or [email protected]

The Importance of CommunityCommunity is important at SHOJ. This past week has been diffi-cult for us with the death of Emily Sharp, but we came together to support each other and the family. I came across what was posted on Facebook as a “Happy Post”. It was from a parent who recently enrolled her children at Sacred Heart of Jesus School after being parishioners for several years. She talked about the good teachers at the public school they attended but kept bringing up community – the way families welcomed them, the friends the kids have, the teams they play on, etc. She concluded with “I truly believe God led is here for a reason. I am so thankful for our parish family. My children have wonderful friends and we have a parish family who would go above and beyond! And most importantly, we have Jesus in our live each day!”

Community is intentional as well. Last week, the middle school had their community calling day. New students joined their school community which will be part of their entire school year. The students share in fun, prayer, and competition while learn-ing leadership skills. It is a great day to be a Cardinal.

Tailgate, Rosary and Eucharistic AdorationSchool of Faith is hosting a Rosary and Adoration - Under the Stars, on October 17!

We can’t wait to share Friendship, Prayer, Adoration + Praise & Worship with the Adults AND the Youth of the Archdiocese…this is an opportunity for the Youth and Adults of our Archdiocese to strengthen each other, support each other and witness to each other!

Why are Small Groups Important?Pope Francis states that young people are searching for deep spirituality and belonging but often fail to find responses to their concerns, needs, problems, and hurts in the usual struc-tures. He calls adults to listen patiently to young people, appreciate their concerns, and speak to them in a language they understand (Evangelii Gaudium, 105). Jesus focused on a small group. Making disciples is very relational and time in-tensive. There needs to be a strong level of trust, communication, and support in order to create an environment for discipleship.

In a small group a teen can feel known, loved and cared for. A level of confidentiality can be achieved which gives teens the freedom to open up about their struggles and doubts. In a small group there is the greater possibility to catch the things that teens don’t understand and have a discussion about it. In addition, the small group allows the leader to know their disciples well and thus be able to customize the topics of discussion that best reach those teens.

Service

Therein lies the....rib“If I were God…” is a dangerous way to start a sentence, but how many of us do this? Probably more regularly than we would like to admit. Even if we don’t verbalize the sentiment, we likely think it from time to time. Most of us finish that statement with some genius, original idea for eradicating difficulty and pain from the world. If I were God, I wouldn’t let anyone go hungry. If I were God, all wealth would be equally distributed. If I were God, war wouldn’t exist. I imagine that, when we think thoughts like these, God shakes His head and wonders why we don’t look a little harder at the whole of His creation — because I can promise you, it’s never lacking. When Adam had a need for a companion, God used what was available: Adam’s rib. Everything that He had put into place was already perfect, already complete. Woman was a new creation, but not a new species. Adam searched through all of creation to find the perfect mate, but God had tucked the answer inside of His creation all along. I’m guilty of it as much as anyone else — looking to Heaven with a chip on my shoulder. “Why haven’t you sent me what I need? I’ve been asking over and over again.” But have I even thought to look inside of myself? Where is the rib you are missing today? What are the opportunities God has set before you? What are the needs that He is ready to fulfill, if only you would stop wasting time lamenting all the solutions that don’t fit the bill?
