On April 29, 2007, the Sacred Heart Parish Youth participated in the March of Dimes Walk America. The March of Dimes is an organization raising money to prevent pre-maturity among newborn babies. Approximately forty youth participated in this event. The walk started in Grant Park and followed a route reaching the lake front and back. The youth walked a total of 6.2 miles which is equivalent to 10 kilometers! The youth got a chance to just hang out with their friends for an entire day and really become a stronger group. They raised a total of about $2,700 to save premature babies!

In the last couple of months, I have felt a tremendous amount of inspiration and fulfillment while attending mass at the Maywood Church. I have been pondering this sense of inspiration for quite some time, trying to decipher why and how this emotion has come to be and whether others are experiencing a similar sentiment.

After reflecting on my experience with the Maywood Church I’ve come to realize that there are numerous factors that may have contributed to this sense of inspiration and fulfillment that I am especially grateful for. The moment I walk through the doors of the Maywood church, I feel a sense of pride and ownership that I have not encountered in the past 25 years. I am no longer rushed to leave church so that another congregation can attend mass. I no longer need to wait for another service to conclude in order to park my car. No longer do I need to celebrate Christmas or Easter Vigils at odd hours of the night in order to avoid conflict with the regular scheduled services.

Since the launch of the Maywood Church, the youth of our community has demonstrated an increased level of commitment and responsibility through various volunteer activities. The ushers, alter servers, readers, and teachers exemplify a strong sense of purpose that I believe comes from a sense of ownership that never existed in the past.

Even the most diminutive of elements such as the fresh coffee that is prepared after the service, the smiling faces of my church community and the ability to gather and socialize without constraint induces this sense of fulfillment that I now know.

With the youth center on its way, there are even further advantages to look forward to. As parents, we are constantly concerned

with the future of our children and anticipate any developments that would

enhance the cultural awareness, spiritual fulfillment and social interaction among our youth. The youth center will provide our children with this opportunity.

I am a parent and my oldest child is 6 years old. I have already begun to worry about his future and am constantly thinking of ways to keep him occupied and out of trouble especially when he begins his teenage years. I am looking forward to the youth center because it will provide a safe heaven for our children to interact with their fellow Knanaya youth and will help build community spirit as our youngsters grow to be future leaders.

The inspiration and fulfillment that arises from the Maywood Church as well as its bright future fills me with confidence that we are heading in the right direction. I hope all of us can appreciate the positive aspects of our church and experience it to the fullest.
