REFLECTIONS BY SAL BUTTACI

Original sin, passed down from father to child, from generation to generation, is traced back to the offspring of our first parents, whom God banished from Eden because of their sin of disobedience. It is the saving waters of Baptism that washes away that sin and makes us children of God. Before God the Father created the world, before Adam and Eve sinned, He knew He would send the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity to be conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a human mother. Jesus would be born without Original Sin becaue he was not conceived by a human father. He would come to die for our sins. The Blessed Virgin Mary, chosen to be the mother of Jesus, was also conceived without Original Sin. She was the exception to the rule that all who were born of human fathers would inherit the stain of Original Sin. Joachim her father was a man. Under normal conditions he would have passed on that sin to Mary through her conception in the womb of her mother Anne. God had chosen Mary to be the mother of Jesus. For this reason God granted her the privilege of being born without Original Sin. When the angel Gabriel announced to her that she was to be the mother of God, he addressed her as “Mary, full of grace.” The grace to which he referred is the privilege granted her as mother of the Christ. She could have refused. She possessed, like all of us, free will, but God Who knows all things knew she would consent. Did God have to grant her this gift of a sinless birth? Of course not! Jesus being God and man would have been born sinless regardless of the long line of Adam’s descendents who were born in sin. Joachim and Anne were born of Original Sin, but Gabriel announced to Mary their daughter, “Blessed are you among women, and Blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:42). God’s gift of her sinless birth was a divine act of Love. Let’s pray to the Mother of God to help us be better Christians realizing that we have a mission to bring God’s gift of Christ humanity.

LETTER FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, Since we celebrate the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God on New Year’s Day, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year. I pray that the Lord Jesus and His Mother Mary may enrich your lives during the New Year with an abundance of God’s blessings. Today’s Feast of Mary the Mother of God is a very appropriate way to begin a new year, reminding us to rely on the powerful intercession of our Heavenly Mother. The Church observes this day also as the World Day of Peace and invites us to pray especially for lasting peace in the world throughout the New Year. Today’s first reading gives us the beautiful Divine lesson from the book of Numbers for the New Year. In the second reading, Paul reminds the Galatians and us that God’s Son has become one of us through Mary and that it was through Him that we have become the children of God. Today’s Gospel describes how the shepherds spread to all their neighbors the Good News surrounding the birth of Jesus which the angel had revealed to them. The Gospel also tells us how Mary treasured “all these things” in her heart, and it reports that on the day of His Circumcision, the Child was given the name Jesus that had been chosen by God Himself. We honor Mary primarily because God honored her by choosing her to become the Mother of Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, when He took on human flesh and became man, as stated in the Bible. The angel said to Mary: ‘you are going to be the mother of a Son and you will call Him Jesus, and He will be called the Son of the Most High.” After the angel had appeared to her and told her that she was to be the Mother of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary visited Elizabeth. At Mary’s greeting Elizabeth said, “Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord’s Mother comes to visit me?” (Luke 1:43). Hence, the Council of Ephesus affirmed in AD 431 that Mary was truly the Mother of God (Theotokos) and in AD 451, the Council of Chalcedon affirmed the Divine Motherhood of Mary as a dogma, an official doctrine of the Holy Catholic Church. Let us strive to be pure and holy like our Heavenly Mother. All mothers want their children to inherit or acquire their good qualities. Hence, let us honor Mary, our Heavenly Mother, by practicing her virtues of Faith, obedience, purity and humble service. Let us make the New Year meaningful by having every day some noble thing to dream, something good to do, and someone to love, the first person being Jesus. Let us sanctify every day of the New Year: by offering all the activities of the day for God’s glory every morning, thus transforming them into prayers; by asking for the anointing and strengthening of the Holy Spirit to do good to others and to avoid evil; by remaining faithful to our family prayer and Bible reading at night. God Bless You!! Father Alfonso Picone
