CELEBRATION OF SACRAMENTS

BAPTISM: Communal celebrations of Baptism take place on the first and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. To arrange a Bap-tism, please call the Rectory. A Baptismal Instruction Session is required before the Baptism. Because Godparents play an im-portant role in the child’s Christian life and education, Godpar-ents must be practicing Catholics who have been confirmed, are at least 14 years of age and, if married, must be in a mar-riage recognized by the Catholic Church. If there is a question about the suitability of someone to be a Godparent, please call the Rectory before asking the person to be a Godparent.

RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance takes place on Saturdays and on the day before First Fridays from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. At other times, the person should make the request directly to a priest.

MARRIAGE: Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance. Diocesan regulations require a marriage preparation program for all couples.

MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: If a parishion-er is in the hospital or homebound, please contact the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the person to receive the Sac-rament of the Anointing of the Sick. Also, Holy Communion can be brought to our homebound parishioners.

Interested in Learning More About the Catholic Church

The process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is available here at Sacred Heart Church. The RCIA is designed specifically for non-Catholics who are interested in exploring the Catholic Christian faith and for baptized Catholics who have not received the other sac-raments of initiation: Eucharist and/or Confirmation. The formal aspects of RCIA will take individuals through various stages of study, prayer, and personal spiritual guidance, culminating in baptism (for non-Christians) and full reception into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. If you know a man or woman who has expressed some personal interest in Catholicism (or if you are such a per-son), please contact the RCIA Team at the rectory (845-561-2264). Informal introductory sessions will acquaint the person with the RCIA process and begin a period of reflection and study of Scripture. For those who desire it, this will be the first step on a journey of faith within the Christian Community at Sacred Heart.

Open enrollment to all men and women.

Meet & Greet

Our area anticipation has ended and the decisions have been made by the Archdiocese regarding the Catholic churches in the Newburgh area.

Truly, it is time for the entire Catholic community to come together and what better way to do so than over a cup of coffee/juice. The Sons of Thunder will be hosting four Meet & Greet gatherings on the following Sundays, after the 8, 10, and 12:00 Masses; June 28, July 26, August 16 and September 13. Everyone is welcome to join us under the tent on the front lawn for coffee, juice and bagels. (Rain location will be the Chapel).

A representative from the REP Program will also be available to answer questions and distribute registration forms for 2015-16.

APOSTOLATE OF PRAYER

United each day, throughout the year, we pray for the members of our beloved clergy here in the Orange Coun-ty Vicariate:

June 29 Rev. Paul Denault, O.Carm Rev. Robert Traudt, O.Carm June 30 Rev. Mark Connell Deacon Angelo Corsaro July 1 Rev. Mark Nacarato Rev. Thomas Zalewski, O.Carm

July 2 Rev. Augustine Graap, O.Carm Deacon Robert Duncan July 3 Ill and suffering priests and deacons July 4 Vocations and seminarians July 5 Pope Francis

Father, in your plan of salvation, you provide shepherds for your people. Fill your Church with the spirit of courage and love. Raise up worthy ministers to your altars, ardent but gentle servants of the Gospel. To those clergy among us who have already answered your call, grant joy and perseverance in your service. We pray in the name of Jesus, your Son and Eternal High priest. Amen

.THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and re-suscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that any-one suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corin-thians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading — Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). Gospel — Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the four-teenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the mone-tary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
