Dear F riend,What a year! It seems as though every time you turn around, there is yet more bad news on
every front. Ready for a change? So are we. And we’ve devised our own cultural stimulus
plan for the 2009–2010 Season, featuring a pair of sparkling gems from the treasure chest of
opera, and one dazzling new production displaying an array of exotic delights.
Sacramento Opera’s new season opens on November 20, 22, and 24, 2009, with Gaetano
Donizetti’s comic and wistful look at the foibles of young love and the misguided belief that
true love can be bought in a bottle, The Elixir of Love. In February 2010, we present Giuseppe
Verdi’s gripping melodrama of the follies of love won and lost, La Traviata. Our season closes
in May 2010 with “A Russian Affair,” an extraordinarily special treat. In two performances only,
we will present opera at its grandest in a Russian double-bill featuring concert stagings of
two of Tchaikovsky’s greatest pieces, Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades, both based on
the works of one of Russia’s most acclaimed writers, Alexander Pushkin. “A Russian Affair”
features Tchaikovsky’s glorious music for the lyric stage performed by an outstanding cast of
acclaimed singers, led by Maestro Rolek and accompanied by the Sacramento Philharmonic
Orchestra. An event you simply won’t want to miss.
As we mentioned, this has been a difficult year for many and non-profit organizations in
particular. Even in the best of times, Sacramento Opera’s subscriptions and ticket sales cover
only about 60% of the costs of our productions. The rest is raised through special events,
grants, and donations from businesses and individuals, including the City and County of
Sacramento, which recently informed us that cuts in their budgets will have a significant effect
on our local government funding.
And so, we must turn to those who believe that Sacramento Opera is important to our
cultural landscape… like you. I hope you will play an active role in helping us close the gap
and ensure that our revenue keeps pace with production costs by making a donation with your
subscription order. If you are already a donor, an increase in your annual gift of just 10% can
make all the difference in our ability to continue to bring forth productions that entertain and
captivate our audiences.
Thanks for your consideration and here’s to a splendid 2009–2010 Season.
Warmest Regards,
Rod Gideons

setting
California wine country in the late 1940s.
This fresh look at one of the gems of the Bel Canto repertoire is set in Post-World War II in a small town in Northern California’s wine country. The Elixir of Love is a timeless, wistful look at
love and longing, pathos, and youthful exuberance. It’s the story of a bashful and naïve farm laborer, who falls in love with the boss’s daughter, Adina. His efforts at love are thwarted by the strapping
Sergeant Belcore, who all but kicks sand in Nemorino’s face as he sweeps Adina off her feet. What’s a boy to do? Enter Dr. Dulcamara, a “snake oil” salesman par excellence. From his roadside
stand the good Doctor hawks a variety of medicines, potions, and elixirs guaranteed to cure everything from impotence to the infirmities of old age. Nemorino timidly approaches and asks if there is
anything for “affairs of the heart,” to which Dr. Dulcamara offers a bottle of cheap red wine disguised as the “Elixir of Love.” Be sure to listen for the famous aria, Una furtiva lagrima. As Richard Dyer of The Boston Globe proclaims, “The Elixir of Love is a potent mix of musical and theatrical delights.”
First performed in Milan, Teatro Cannobiana, May 12, 1832

setting
In and around Paris, mid nineteenth century
Based on the novel and play La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, Jr., La Traviata is one of the ten most popular operas in the repertoire. The story was immortalized
in the classic movie Camille starring Greta Garbo and later given a popular update in Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts. Listen for the famous “Drinking Song” and Sempre libera aria.
This vivid “slice of life” is loosely based on actual events that took place between Alexandre Dumas, Jr., and his lover Marie Duplessis. The story revolves around the relationship between the stunningly beautiful but frail courtesan Violetta Valéry and her lover the well-born
Alfredo Germont. Alfredo’s father Giorgio’s efforts thwart their relationship and serve as a catalyst for the opera’s heart-wrenching climax. Don’t miss this romantic tale of love, passion, and betrayal.
First performed in Venice, Teatro La Fenice, March 6, 1853.

Enjoy opera at its grandest in a dazzling Russian double-bill featuring concert stagings of two of Tchaikovsky’s greatest works, Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades,

Eugene Onegin gives us a glimpse of life among St. Petersburg’s wealthy in the 1820s, capturing the essence of a unique world in all its glory and despair.
The operatic masterpiece of obsessive love and greed, The Queen of Spades, follows an army officer who deviously learns the “secret of the three cards,”
which costs him his possessions, lover, and ultimately his own life.
