COUNTY 4-H NEWS

4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign

4-H’ers investing in 4-H’ers. This is the essence of the 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign, sponsored each year by the State 4-H Council. The campaign raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. This year marks the 31st anniversary of the Iowa 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign. Last year, we exceeded our goal and raised over $30,000. We want to continue that growth and have set our goal for this year at $31,000 with a suggested $3 per member donation. We also want every county in Iowa to participate! YOU can help grow 4-H in Iowa! Club Donation Forms and contributions should be sent to the Sac County office by May 15. Sac County would like to see 100% participation by every club!

4-H Endowment

For the 2016 year there are 5-$50 individual grants and 3-$250 club grants available. The applications are availa-ble on the Sac County Extension website. For the 2015-16 4-H year the Endowment will be paying $10 per mem-ber towards their program development fee. Please remember that the Endowment has started to give out $250 scholarships to those 4-H seniors that graduate high school. This year the 4-H member must have completed three years of record books to be eligible for the scholarship! The applications are also on the Sac County Exten-sion website.

Pallets

The Sac County Extension Office has acquired about 30 pallets from the NRCS office. Pallets can be used as a great 4-H project! If you would like a pallet please call the Sac County Extension Office and your name will be added to the list on a first come first serve basis! We challenge each of you to find a new use for the pallet and bring your finished product to fair! Your finished product can be entered in the fair as a home improvement pro-ject or as a woodworking project depending on your goal for the project. Please call the Extension Office or email [email protected] to reserve your pallet today!

Tack Swap

The Sac County 4-H Horseshoes club is hosting a Tack Swap on Saturday, March 19 from 9am-5pm at the Sac County fairgrounds. Cost is $5 for ages 6 on up. There will be a lunch stand available. State Fair Swine — Families must come in to the Extension Office and pick up $8 DNA tags, a tagger, and a DNA envelope (one envelope per 4-H member). Both market and breeding swine need to have DNA tags for State Fair. 4-H’er returns home, tags each pig, puts DNA sample tag into large envelope for all pigs, writes down tag numbers on back of DNA envelope, signs and seals the DNA envelope and returns the tagger and DNA en-velopes to the Extension Office by May 15th. 4-H’er then inputs all data for each pig into 4hOnline under “Swine (not weighed in)” animal type (tag #, sex, breed, ear notch, etc.) by May 15th. County Fair Swine—Families must come in to the Extension Office and pick up the free tags and a tagger. 4-H’er returns home, tags each pig by May 15th. 4-H’er then returns tagger to the Extension Office and then 4-H’er inputs all data for each pig into 4hOnline under “Swine (not weighed in)” animal type (tag #, sex, breed, ear

Swine Information

Identifying Animals in 4H Online

Identifying Animals in 4H Online Again this year - we are asking 4-H exhibitors to identify their animals in 4HOnline. Remember that only ani-mals identified can be shown at fair. Animals that need to be entered in 4HOnline include swine, cow/calf pairs, breeding beef (unless you already identified animal at Jan. weigh-in), sheep (breeding only), horse, dairy cattle, bottle lambs, bucket/bottle calves, poultry, rabbits, pets, meat goats (breeding on-ly), or dogs. What to do to enter animals in 4HOnline: 1. Go to https://iowa.4honline.com and login like you did when you enrolled in 4-H. 2. Once you are in the program, find your name and click "Edit". That will take you to your Personal Infor-mation Screen. On that screen near the top of the page you will see a tab titled “Animals/Livestock”. Click on the tab. 3. There you will see a drop down box and any previously entered animals listed. Select the animal type you want to enter and click the “Add Animal” button. 4. Enter the information requested and click the “Save” button. All animal IDs must be submitted no later than May 15th at 11:59 PM. At midnight the program will shut down and the only animals you will be able to add after that are rabbits and poultry. Rabbits and poultry can be added until 11:59 PM on July 1st. Make sure that any animal that you plan to exhibit (with the exception of rabbits and poultry) is on the list before you close out!

For Iowa State Fair market swine: You will need to come to the office and get your ear tags ($8 each) first and then complete the entry online. NEW for 2016 – State Fair is now requiring ear notches along with the DNA punch tag.

Horse Exhibitors: You will need to upload 4 photos (front view, rear view, left side view, and right side view) to complete your entry. If you have problems with this, please contact the Extension Office.

For breeding beef: You MUST enter at least one tattoo if you plan to show your heifer at the Iowa State Fair this also includes market heifers that are showing as breeding. If you enter the calfhood vaccination num-ber or leave both fields blank, the heifer WILL NOT be eligible for the Iowa State Fair. All fields (including registration number) must be complete and accurate no later than May 15th. If no registration number is entered by May 15th, the heifer will only be allowed to shown as crossbred.
