Research
Children’s Worlds Study: International Survey of Children’s Well-Being (South Africa, 2010
- Current)
Co-principal investigator:
The Children’s Worlds study is a collaborative cross-country initiative between 43 countries and
is co-ordinated by the International Society for Child Indicators (ISCI), and endorsed by
UNICEF. The study aims to collect substantive and representative data on children’s subjective
well-being across three age groups (8, 10, 12 years). Wave I was conducted in 2012 and
comprised of a deep pilot across 21 countries and included a final sample of 34 500 children.
Wave II included over 56 000 children from 15 countries. Wave three of the study is currently
under way and includes an international sample of more than 150 00 children. To date I have
published seven articles from the study in internationally accredited journals, as well as a
research report on the South African results of both Wave I and Wave II (see www.isciweb.org).
The project is now in Wave III. Under my directorship, funding was secured for the
implementation of the South African study. Data collection for the project has been completed
with a nationally representative sample of children across South Africa. The study is supported
and funded by the Jacobs Foundation (Switzerland) and the National Research Foundation of
South Africa.
Children’s Worlds project funding
I am co-principal investigator on the Children’s Worlds project that that was awarded R1.2
million by the National Research Foundation (NRF) Thuthuka grant and the NRF Human and
Social Development instrument.
Multinational Qualitative Study on Children’s Understandings of their Well-Being (2014 –
Current)
Co-principal investigator:
The Multinational Qualitative Study on Children’s Understandings of their Well-Being is an
international collaborative study which aims to understand children’s perceptions of well-being,
between the ages of 11 to 14 years, and their daily lives using a qualitative perspective. The
study endeavours to understand how children understand dimensions of well-being in a locally
oriented, but multi-nationally comparative manner. Under my directorship Wave 1 of the project
has been completed. This included an in-depth qualitative engagement with more than 50
children in three communities in the Western Cape. The data collection for this project followed
the application of new methodologies for engaging with children, and included the children’s
mosaic method, photovoice, community mapping, and the Children’s Delphi. I have published
three articles from this study. The study is currently in Wave 2 which includes data collection
with children across all nine provinces of South Africa.

Emerging researchers' perceptions and experiences of academic writing in the quantitative
sciences: A multinational study (Current)
Co-principal Investigator:
The study aims to explore emerging researchers (including postgraduate students) perceptions
and experiences of academic writing in the quantitative sciences across nine contexts (South
Africa, Algeria, Chile, Argentina, Romania, Spain, Indonesia, and South Korea). More
specifically, the study aims to determine the factors that support and challenge the academic
writing process. Finally, the study aims to generate a set of recommendations to improve
academic writing in the quantitative sciences.
Adolescent flourishing in South Africa: A national population-based mixed methods study
(Current)
Co-principal Investigator
Following a multi-method design the study explores adolescent subjective well-being and
flourishing using a national representative sample of adolescents (13-17). The study draws
together the eudaimonic and hedonic traditions of well-being research with the aims of
developing a contextual model of adolescent flourishing. The study further aims to provide an in-
depth understanding of adolescent’s perceptions of the factors influencing their subjective well-
being and flourishing. Finally, the study aims to provide and evidence base for policy makers to
make informed decisions regarding adolescent development. The study is currently in the project
initiation phase (proposal development and project funding). We have completed a pilot study to
test the validity of the measuring instruments and are in process of developing the protocols for
the qualitative phase of the study. The study in being conducted in collaboration with the Quality
of Life Research Institute (University of Girona).
Historical Subjectivity and the City across Generations (2016-Current)
The Historical Subjectivity and the City across Generations is a comparative study on the
historical identity of different generations living in global cities (Berlin – Cape Town – Istanbul
– Sydney), investigating the relevance of the history of cities and historical subjectivity for self-
concept.
Independent Research Project (B. Psych), Cornerstone Institute, (January-June 2017)
Research co-ordinator,
This course is designed to facilitate the independent planning, execution and reporting/ writing
up of a research project in a community setting.
Internship:
MA Research Psychology Intern (2012, Completed, Department of Psychology, University of
the Western Cape)
The internship entailed a variety of activities which ranged from the execution of required
administrative tasks associated with the particular research projects; project management;
proposal and report writing; data collection (quality checking, data capturing, cleaning of data,
data analysis, interpretation of data, literature searches) and programme evaluation; and
international collaboration. During this period, I was a lecturer and tutor across undergraduate
5
levels, and was involved in the supervisory process of four M.A. Research Psychology students
who were enrolled in the programme during this period.
Alcohol use and risky sexual behaviour amongst young adults in the Western Cape, South
Africa (2011-2013)
Project co-ordinator
The aim of this project was to investigate young people’s sexual risk behaviour and its
relationship with alcohol consumption in a low-income community in Cape Town. Two articles
have been published from this project in internationally accredited journals.
Journal editing Assistant Editor, Neuropsychonalysis (Journal of the International Neuropsychoanalysis
Society, NPSA) (2017, Current)
I am currently the assistant editor for the journal Neuropsychoanalysis, working in collaboration
with the Editor-in-Chief, Dr Maggie Zellner. The journal provides an arena for integrating the
explosion of neuroscientific insights into existing psychoanalytic theories and models, and for
enriching behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, neurology, neuropsychology and related fields
with the dynamic perspectives of psychoanalytic thought and practice.
