UC Irvine ICS
• One of UC’s earliest school for Information and Computing
• Comprises of CS, Informatics and Stats• I interact with two groups (so far): – Information Systems Group (DB+Media)– Machine Learning– Human Computer Interaction
Information Systems Group
• Ramesh Jain (Host)– Vivek Singh, Pinaki Sinha: resolution of twitter hashtags– Pinaki Sinha: cohesion/coherence in photos/videos– Arjun Satish: summarization of photo streams– On my own: SlideSeer alignment of two streams
• Sharad Mehrotra (Host)– Alessandro, Rabia, Dmitri: data cleaning toolkit– Naveen Ashish: Nursing system installation– Bijit Hore: Rethinking DB/text summarization from an
entropy perspective
Other projects
• Chen Li– TASTIER: fast, approximate string matching. For ForeCite(Note)
• Nalini Venkatsubramanian– Course projects on distributed ForeCite components?– NUS-Duke proposal on clinical article IE (her role would be in
dissemination)
Also: Machine Learning Group• Alexander Ihler, student Qiang Liu
– Better CRF training via sampling. To be applied to ParsCit dataset and problems with multiple fields
Lessons learned so far
• Almost all PIs run weekly meetings. Short updates from everyone for about 1 hour total
• Chen Li runs his group with code reviews. All code, data and important emails are in a wiki/CVS/bug reporting system. Useful for integration among distributed students.
• UC (in general) is an easy area for people to seredipitiously intersect. Easier to get the word of your research out.
• NUS people are already out there in all institutions. Our university name is well-known.
