Of all the fell resorts in Finish Lapland, Saariselkä has the most loyal friends, who return

time and time again just as overjoyed at the reunion. There is good reason for this loyalty:

Saariselkä combines the services of a bustling event venue and the untouched, spectacu-

lar fell nature – providing space for relaxation and revitalisation to prepare for returning

to ordinary life. This is exactly what the locals mean when they say that Saariselkä is a

heavenly place. A myriad of fells, trails, ravines and streams are full of happy, private

memories of moments when a holiday really felt like a holiday.

We at North Village have compiled this brochure for you. We believe it will be useful and

provide joy, whether you are an old friend or a new and curious traveller. Take a seat

and read on. We will reveal why Saariselkä is worth experiencing, a place in peace of mind

Where in the world?Saariselkä is located in Finnish Lapland, right by the

national park named after ex-President Urho Kekkonen

and close to the Russian border. The characteristic fea-

tures of the region include rugged and picturesque

open fell highland landscapes, bustling indigenous

Sámi culture and the gold digging traditions.

Saariselkä is a distinct year-round, cosmopolitan tour-

ist resort, that is renowned for its well maintained and

partly illuminated cross-country skiing and route net-

work. Saariselkä is also a popular starting point for lon-

ger hikes, even as far as the northern Norwegian Arctic

Ocean. The diverse nature provides you the opportunity

to explore various flora zones from old pine forests to

treeless fell summits.

On the next few pages, we will tell you how Saariselkä

changes to the rhythm of the seasons and give you some

hints of various activities, from which you can choose

what interests you most for your trip. When is it your

time to visit Saariselkä?

Saariselkä is traditionally a popular destination for

ruska trips. Come alone, with friend or larger group

and dive into the colourful array of the autumnal fell

landscape. Enjoy clear, bright days in nature on well

marked trails to return as the evening sets in to relax

and enjoy more recreation with fun evening activity.

The long and sensually stimulating autumnal ruska pe-

riod is the best time to conquer Saariselkä on a hike or

bike, or perhaps by enhancing performance with some

Nordic walking. In the Urho Kekkonen National Park,

the hiker will not only be able to witness untouched na-

ture, but also remains of the ancient and still currently

characteristic reindeer husbandry and hunting cul-

ture of the region, with deer pit traps, cabins and Skolt

Sámi settlement lands.

In the winter months, Saariselkä is full of dusky, magi-

cal ambiance, making it a good place to hold great

twilight parties. The Christmas party season marks

the start of the series of bright spots, that continues

with the celebration of Christmas and New Year, to

come to an end when the springtime sunshine starts to

brighten the fell slopes. The northern nature plays its

own part in brightening up the twilight with spectacu-

lar Northern Lights and sharply drawn starry skies.

Come as a group to savour the heart of winter in Saa-

riselkä. The urban winter and greyness seem so far

away whilst pampered with abundant buffet servings,

joint excursions and tranquillity provided by nature.

Think how you can escape the everyday routines by ski-

ing along the pure white snowscapes of the fell slopes

with the moonlight as your guide. Some bright spots

last forever.

Springtime Saariselkä has everything: people, snows-

capes, sunshine and an endless range of activities to-

gether with a large group, or in your own peace and quiet.

The uniqueness of Saariselkä is especially easy to see in

the springtime. Whenever you wish, the services and bus-

tle of the large fell resort can change into the tranquillity

of the untouched wilderness without the need for arduous,

time consuming transfers from one place to the next.

When the lovers of Saariselkä gather as they are attracted

by the brightness, there is fun to be had almost round the

clock. The opportunities for spending an active and sporty

holiday are limitless. Cross-country skiing trails, down-

hill skiing slopes, reindeer and husky safaris, as well

as a wide range of exploration trips await the springtime

awakened, joyful adventurers.

and happiness in summertime SaariselkäNuggets of gold

Summer in Saariselkä is a golden time in many respects.

The sunshine caresses the landscapes throughout the

day and night, sometimes without even setting at all,

and colours your visit in unforgettable, gentle golden

shades. June is highlighted by Midsummer, that among

the nature and authentic indigenous Sámi of the region

provides an unusually magical experience.

Saariselkä – in the same way as the Sun – doesn’t sleep

in the summer, as it is full of guided and independent

activity. You can participate in our excursions to a

Sámi village, reindeer farm, and gold panning, as well

as exploring the fell countryside on a hike or a bike, in

a group or independently.

North Villagetakes you beyond the ordinary

Snowmobile Adventure in the Wilderness

Driving on IceGreetings, briefing, meeting the instructors – and off we go! First exer-

cise: acceleration on ice. No problem. No problem? The wheels of your

car spin like mad, but otherwise nothing happens. Putting your foot

down does not always guarantee the best start! After that, attempts at

braking and avoiding obstacles on the ice are performed. So easy when

the instructor shows you how. Now it’s your turn – bang, parts of the

foam rubber wall fly through the air. But a few more attempts, and you

too manage to successfully complete this exercise. Now is time for the

race against the clock on an icy circular track. Your colleague did it

in only 22.1 seconds! Naturally, you are better than him – if only the

spikes were slightly longer and sharper. It’s a good thing there are soft

snow walls everywhere! Or what about an introduction to rally driv-

ing? With a real rally car (with long rally spikes on the tyres!)? And

with one of the many famous Finnish high-class rally drivers as your

instructor? Try it - it’s fun, it’s adventure, it’s excitement!

Norht Village provides incentive trips, brainstorms and

implements customised solutions for the requirements of groups

of any size throughout Lapland. As a local DMC office, we know the

region and its possibilities – which are almost limitless.

Take a look at the example entireties below and think how happy

your important friends or business partners would feel to be given

the opportunity to join the adventure. We believe you will make

precisely the impression you are after and perhaps a bit more as well.

Speed across the snowscapes on snowmobiles, test your wilderness skills and savour lunch in the heart

of the Arctic nature! Your group will be taken into the heart of untouched Lapland, with landscapes

beyond compare: on a fine day, you may even be able to see the fell highlands beyond the Russian bor-

der that are located up to 30 kilometres away. You travel through changing landscapes from treeless

felltops to wooded valleys, on top of frozen rivers and lakes. The six-hour safari includes coffee breaks

and a lunch, which is served in a forest cabin on the shores of a frozen lake. During the same trip, you

can also try some ice fishing, making a campfire, or snowshoe hiking in deep snow.

Saariselkä nature doesn’t encourage you to spend time

indoors, but every holiday needs a place for you to rest,

one that is functional and flexible for your requirements.

A quality basic cabin has everything you need, but noth-

ing unnecessary: you’ll sleep well, meals are made easily,

clothes are dried, and the percolator brews you coffee to

savour. After a breathtaking day of nature activity, what

could be better than lifting your feet up and listening to

the sound of silence.

The one and two cloudberry cabins of North Village are

tidy and include everything you could want for simple

cabin living. Most important of all, most accommodation

spots are situated close to excursion routes, ski slopes

or other services in Saariselkä – you can head for nature

right from the doorstep of your holiday cabin.

In Inari and Northern Lapland, the landscape holds

a history of life and culture without any large visible

or spectacular monuments. The traces left by humans

have blended into the environment and have never

formed big obstacles for the natural course of nature.

People have themselves lived to the rhythm of nature

in summer and winter grounds, yet respecting nature,

from which they have received their livelihood.

Despite their natural way of living, the peoples of the

north have not lived in isolation from the rest of the

world. Their living environment has been crisscrossed

with route of travel and trade, and these have been

used by tradespeople, clergymen, civil servants and

explorers alike.

Today’s visitors explore northern culture in a differ-

ent way: in constructed sites, exhibitions and events,

guided excursions and tours. The course of the year

has a large variety of excellent choices for cultural

tourists. These are events to which the locals also come

to meet one another and to enjoy the performances. At

the same time, tourists have the opportunity to get to

know the locals and the various sides of culture.

The cultural year begins in January with Skabmagov-

illa – the indigenous film festival in Inari. During the

winter, the Reindeer Cup ends with the Inari Reindeer

Championship Race in late March. The Annunciation

and Easter are festive times for early spring, with a

whole range of traditional events all over Northern

Lapland. The Ijahis Idjaevent arranged in mid-August

is a showcase of Sámi music and northern ethnomusic,

with the great venue of the soon completed Sajos Sámi

Culture Centre Auditorium. November sees a gather-

ing of nature photographers and nature enthusiasts in

the Camera Borealis Sàmi Museum and the Northern

Lapland Nature Centre premises. Kaamos Jazz, on the

other hand, sees concert venues from Tankavaara to

Saariselkä fill with Jazz lovers.

The cultural folk come from

all over to swing to these

events – from north and

south, east and west.

Irja Jefremoff

Beyond the fell highlands of Saariselkä, close to the Arc-

tic Ocean, is the enormous Lake Inarinjärvi, Finland’s

northernmost lake. The rugged shoreline runs around

rocky hills for around three thousand kilometres.

In addition to its northern location, Lake Inarinjärvi

differs from Finland’s other great lakes due to its

wilderness qualities. There is no permanent housing

on any of the islands. Nellim is a natural departure

dock for many who are travelling to the eastern side

of the lake. Boat docks and boat launching spots can

also be found in Nanguniemi, Veskoniemi, Inari parish

village, and Kotalahti in Partakko. A number of ice

fishers take the route via Nitsijärvi.

Right through to the present day, Lake Inarinjärvi

has remained an Eldorado for hikers and people who

gather food from nature. Metsähallitus manages the

region and has built boating support points and jetties

for the most popular camping places. Metsähallitus

also services and maintains the wilderness cabins

around the lake. Using these measures, the intention

is to concentrate the travel of tourists and to save the

beautiful, rugged, yet very vulnerable nature.

For people who value peace and quiet, Lake Inarinjärvi

is a place visited again and again. It is a place where

the fast pace of modern, everyday life does not reach.

It is a place where you can experience the nature of the

wilderness at its best – rugged, yet handsome. It is a

place where hikers can begin to understand how small

they really are in the huge cycle of nature.

The spaciousness of the cabin, handy location and good

standard of facilities are important when there are holi-

daymakers of different ages with different needs. Holi-

daymaking is carefree and peaceful when everyone has

their own space and time to do their own thing in addi-

tion to enjoying holiday time together.

When holidaying with the family, the accommodation

doesn’t need to have all the home comforts, but most of

them. In this way, there is no waste of time and energy,

as the basic tasks are easily handled on the side with-

out any hassle. The main thing is that everyone has the

equal chance to relaxation and recreation – it is a holiday

after all!

The best for the family

Today’s excursion areas in the Saariselkä resort used

to be Skolt Sámi hunting grounds and Inari Sámi

reindeer husbandry land. The people of Inari herded

their reindeer to the ancient borders of Inari and

Sompio, to the Kiilopää, Giloaivi reindeer separation

enclosure.

Lapland’s numerous gold rivers were known by the

Sámi families and reindeer villages well before the

gold rush of the nineteenth century. The gold was

also gathered by the Sámi due to their excellent

knowledge of the terrain and nature. Who wouldn’t

be interested in picking up some precious metals

from nature? Gold nuggets were collected and exca-

vated from their own claims mainly for trading in

Ruija. The people of the Arctic placed more value on

silver, as it was the symbol of the moon that lit up the

twilight period.

In 1902, Aktiebolaget Prospector cleared and con-

structed the first carriage route from Köngäs in

Sodankylä to Laanila. The company’s principle base

and workshops were built along the Laanioja brook.

The mining company search for a variety of minerals

from the area, not just gold. Prospector’s mining en-

gineer and mine manager, Emil Sarlin loved reindeer

and travelling by reindeer sleigh. Indeed, during

the winter travelling with reindeer was a popular

pastime in connection with ore prospecting. Emil

was probably the first person to publish a Swedish

language reindeer husbandry guide for the Grand

Duchy of Finland.

The operations of the mining company stopped

already after only five years. The headquarters of the

company later became the Laanila Kestikievari Inn,

which is the first tourism enterprise to arrive in Saa-

riselkä. Today, the Inn operates as a game restaurant

and a base for a number of activities.

Lapland’s gold is so-called “blood-free” gold, which

means that the indigenous peoples or gold diggers

were not killed due to gold fever. Over the past few

years, a number of grandfathers from the United

States have travelled to Saariselkä to purchase

this blood-free gold for the wedding rings of their

grandchildren. In Central Europe or elsewhere in

the world, nobody can be certain that the mix of gold

does not include any gold stolen from the Incas. The

importance of ethical values has also increased in the

trading of gold, in particular thanks to the awareness

of consumers. Nature conservation perspectives and

ecologically sustainable solutions are implemented

using new means in mining activities. In addition to

blood-free gold, people are also interested in eco-gold,

which is gold that has been excavated without using

earthmoving machinery or other heavy machinery.

Only gold that has been excavated with a shovel ad-

heres to eco-gold criteria.

It is still possible to dig for gold along the Laanioja

brook, for instance on the Sateen-

kaarenpää claim. The owner of

the claim familiarises its

guests with Laanila and

the history of gold in

Lapland, and of course

the secrets behind

eco-gold.
