Components

Control module The control module is located under the floor mat on the left side under the front seat. Siren The extra horn (siren) is mounted behind the left rear part of the wing liner in the left front wheel housing. Depending on the requirements in different countries, only the extra horn is used or it is used together with the standard horn behind the grille. Door switches The ICE control module informs the theft alarm control module when a door is open/closed. Hood switch The hood switch is located by the main fuse box in the engine compartment. The switch closes at the slightest opening of the hood. Microswitch, tailgate

The microswitch located by the lock cylinder in the tailgate makes it impossible to unlock and open the tailgate without the alarm sounding off. Switch, luggage compartment lighting For monitoring the luggage compartment, the switch for the luggage compartment lighting is used. Starter relay When the alarm is activated, an opening relay built into the control module draws power for approximately 30 minutes. This means that the start relay for the starter motor does not receive any operating current. If a new alarm should be activated within the 30 minutes, a new time block period is started. Microswitch, driver door Activation and deactivation of the alarm is accomplished using a microswitch by the lock cylinder in the driver door. The microswitch is also used for the central locking system. LED

The alarm is activated when the key is turned clockwise 90 °, that is, 45 ° past the lock position, so called theft alarm position.

Important

Pull out the key from the theft alarm position in order to achieve full function.

When unlocking, the key is turned 90° counter-clockwise from the neutral position. When the alarm has been activated, the arming of the alarm is delayed for 10 seconds (delay period). Within these 10 seconds, doors, hood and tailgate can be opened without tripping the alarm. During the delay period (10 seconds), the LED glows steady and then switches to flashing with a frequency of 1 flash/2 seconds. If a door, the hood or tailgate is opened during the delay period, the steady glow changes to flashing with a frequency of 1 flash/second.

Setting off the alarm

It is possible to open the boot lid with the alarm activated without tripping the alarm. The boot lid monitoring function is then removed from the alarm. Unlocking and locking of the boot lid must be performed as follows in order to not trip the alarm.

• Turn the key to the unlocked position.

• Open the boot lid.

• Turn the key back to neutral position.

• Remove the key. If the boot lid is opened with the key during the delay period, the LED flashes with a frequency of 1 flash/second for 10 seconds. The alarm is activated following the delay period, but the boot lid is excluded from the monitoring function. When the boot lid is closed, a new delay period starts, but only for the boot lid. The LED glows steady. The alarm is still activated for all other doors and the hood.

The activated alarm is protected against false alarms according to the following:

• Knocks to the car.

• Vibration of the car.

• Wind load (external pressure waves).

• Malfunction of a direction indicator bulb.

• Automatic on-off switching of components using power.

• External noise.

1. When the acoustic alarm is tripped and sounds off, the control module function must not be disrupted.

2. The control module performs a self-diagnosis each time the alarm is activated.

3.

If a malfunction is detected, the LED flashes with a frequency of 1 flash/second during the delay period. The function of the alarm is maintained as much as it is possible.

The theft alarm control module can detect any short-circuits in any direction indicator circuit. In case of a short-circuit, only the acoustic alarm signal will function and the direction indicator signals are not tripped. This is so the fuse that supplies the theft alarm will not malfunction, which would mean that the theft alarm would be deactivated. The acoustic signal maintains normal function.

• factory-fitted

• as a retro-fitting kit (there is pre-fitted wiring in all cars) The alarm includes a number of components, some of which are used exclusively by the alarm, and others of which are parts normally included in the car, but also used by the alarm. Some of these, such as sensors, have a monitoring function in the system and others set off the alarm. There is an electronic control module that centrally controls the operation of the system. In order for the theft alarm to comply with different laws in different countries and to meet the requirements of different customers, the alarm is programmable.

Basic functions of Theft Alarm 900

Regulation and control The theft alarm has a central electronic control module that controls all the functions of the system. Sensing The theft alarm has a number of sensors which are connected to the alarm control module via the car's cable assembly. These sense if a break in takes place and send this on to the alarm control module. Alarm signalling

Page 25: SAAB 900 Alarm_programming

When the alarm is set off, this is made apparent with sound by the alarm horn sounding and/or light by all the direction indicators flashing. 3 circuit breaking The control module also has a 3 circuit breaking function that is activated when the alarm is set off. This prevents the engine being started by immobilizing the car's starter function, fuel supply and engine control system. Operation Operation (arming and disarming) of the theft alarm is by remote control. Alarm status There is an LED in the car to show the status of the alarm. This flashes with different frequencies or is lit continuously depending on the situation. Programming/scan tool diagnostics The ISAT scam tool is used for programming and scan tool diagnostics on the theft alarm.

Control module

The control module is located under the left-hand front seat. This is connected to all the input components of the theft alarm via a 25 pin connector. The main function of the electronic control module is to check the situation of the sensors when the alarm is armed and to set off the alarm with the horn and/or direction indicators and prevent starting with 3 circuit breaking in case of a break-in. In order to achieve this, there is a central processing unit in the electronic control module, in which a control program is stored in PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory). As different markets have special requirements for the operation of the theft alarm, the theft alarm can be programmed to adapt it to the particular market. In addition, there are several possibilities when programming to adapt the function to the requirements of the customer. Programming is carried out using the ISAT scan tool and the information is stored in EEPROM (Electrically Erasable PROM). Earlier programming is erased when data is programmed. Stored programming does not disappear if the voltage is cut.

Remote control

Remote control The theft alarm is operated (armed/disarmed) using a remote control. For remote control of the theft alarm, there is an antenna fitted in the cable assembly next to the alarm control module under the left-hand front seat. This is connected to the control module (pin 1 for signal and pin 14 for ground). Point the remote control at the antenna. The range is normally about 8 meters, but can be significantly further in the favorable conditions. Due to legal requirements, the remote control for JA is equipped with a weaker transmitter for shorter range. The remote control is of the RF (Radio Frequency) type. The remote control transmits a 64 bit code. This is compared with a list of valid codes (max 4) in the control module. If the code is valid, the control module acts on the command. There are two buttons on the remote control for remote control of the alarm:

• Button (left- hand) used to lock/unlock and arm/disarm the theft alarm.

• Button (right-hand) used to unlock the tailgate and to disarm the tailgate if the alarm is armed.

Page 30: SAAB 900 Alarm_programming

Changing the battery The remote control is powered by two batteries and with normal use, the batteries should last for about two years. Change the batteries when the range of the remote control drops. For safety reasons, it is recommended that the batteries are changed every year.

Important

After the batteries have been changed, the left-hand button on the remote control must be pressed five times in a row.

New remote control If the remote control has been lost and a new one is to be used, it must first be programmed (encrypted) with the theft alarm before it is used. Arming the theft alarm

Disarming the theft alarm

1. When arming, press the left- hand button on the remote control. When the button is pressed, a light confirmation is given by the car's direction indicators flashing once. The flash/light confirmation for this function is programmable.

2. The car's theft alarm is then armed and all doors are locked by the central locking system which has received a signal from the alarm control module (pin 17). The tailgate is also armed if it is closed.

3. When the alarm is armed, the LED lights continuously for 10 seconds. During this so-called delay period, the alarm is not armed and passenger doors (not the driver door), tailgate or hood may be open without the alarm being set off. After the delay period, the LED goes from a continuous light to flashing once every two seconds to indicate that the alarm is armed.

4. If the driver door is opened during the delay period, the alarm is automatically disarmed. If the driver door is open or if the ignition is on, it is not possible to lock/unlock the car and arm/disarm the alarm using the remote control.

Disarming/unlocking the tailgate

1. When disarming, press the left- hand button on the remote control. When the button is pressed, a light confirmation is given by the car's direction indicators flashing three times (if the alarm has been set off during the time it was armed, it flashes 5 times). The flash/sound confirmation of this function is programmable.

2. The car's theft alarm is then disarmed and all doors (except the tailgate) are unlocked by the central locking system which receives the unlock signal from the alarm control module (pin 6).

3. When the alarm is disarmed, the LED lights for 1 second and then goes out.

Important

It is not possible to arm/disarm the alarm with the key.

this function is programmable.

2. If the alarm was armed, the tailgate is now removed from the alarm. The LED flashes 1 flash/2 seconds if the rest of the alarm is armed and disarming/unlocking takes place after the delay period. The tailgate is unlocked with a signal from the control module (pin 23).

3. When the tailgate is closed, a new delay period for the tailgate starts (10 seconds). It is then once again alarmed if the rest of the alarm was armed.

Important

It is not possible to open the tailgate using the remote control if the ignition is on. On the other hand, this can be achieved with special programming.

It is not possible to disarm the tailgate using the key. If the tailgate is opened with the key when the alarm is armed, it will be set off.

Scan tool diagnostics

The theft alarm control module communicates with the ISAT scan tool via pin 19. The communication is two-way and as such is both input and output signal. The ISAT scan tool can communicate with the theft alarm when the ignition in the "ON" position (+15), but communication normally takes place with the ignition "OFF". Communication between the ISAT scan tool and the theft alarm is not possible if the alarm is armed.

System Overview, Anti-Theft Alarm with VSS

Anti-Theft Alarm 900 with VSS

The anti-theft system for the Saab 900 consists of an alarm and a security system controlled by a remote control unit. Two versions of the alarm are available:

3. Electrical system\Theft protection Technical description - System Overv...

900 T 1996 1

Page 39: SAAB 900 Alarm_programming

1. Anti-theft alarm, which is practically identical to the earlier M95 Anti-Theft Alarm 900.

2. Anti-theft alarm with VSS (Vehicle Security System), which is a further development of earlier alarm designs and constitutes a more complete anti-theft alarm system. Although most of the functions are identical in both alarm versions, there are some important differences. The anti-theft alarm is available:

• factory-fitted

• as an accessory kit (all cars are pre-wired). The anti-theft alarm with VSS is not available as an accessory kit. The alarm includes a number of components, some of which are used exclusively by the alarm, and others of which are parts normally included in the car, but also used by the alarm. Some of these, such as sensors, have a monitoring function in the system and others set off the alarm. There is an electronic control module that centrally controls the operation of the system. The anti-theft alarm is programmable so that it can be adapted to meet the requirements and laws of different countries, as well as the preferences of different customers.

Control module

The control module is located under the left-hand front seat. This is connected to all the input components of the theft alarm via a 25 pin connector. The principal functions of the electronic control module are to check the status of the sensors when the alarm is armed, to set off the alarm via the horn and/or direction indicators and, by means of 3-circuit breaking (Anti-theft alarm) or immobilizing (Anti-theft alarm with VSS), to prevent the car from being started in the event of a break-in.

Remote control The anti-theft alarm is operated by means of a remote control unit, except the anti-theft alarm for US/CA which can also be operated by means of the car key. For remote control, an antenna is mounted in the wiring harness next to the theft alarm control module under the left-hand front seat. This is connected to the control module (pin 1/signal and pin 14/ground). Point the remote control unit at the aerial, the normal range is about 8 m but under favourable conditions may be much longer. (On account of legal requirements, the remote control unit for JA is equipped with a weaker transmitter so that it will have a shorter range.) The remote control unit is of RF (Radio Frequency) type. The remote control unit transmits an identification code (each remote control unit has its own code) and a "rolling code" which changes every time the button is pressed. If the code is valid the electronic control module executes the command. There are two buttons on the remote control for remote control of the alarm:

• Button (left) is for locking/unlocking the central locking system and arming/disarming the anti-theft alarm. On anti-theft alarms with VSS, the button also disarms a self-immobilized car.

• Button (right-hand) used to unlock the tailgate and to disarm the tailgate if the alarm is

acknowledgement of this function is programmable.

2. If the alarm was armed, the boot lid/tailgate is then removed from the alarm system. The LED will flash at a rate of 1 flash/2 seconds if the other alarms are armed and disarming/unlocking has been carried out after the delay period. The boot lid/tailgate is unlocked via a signal from control module (pin 23).

3. When the tailgate is closed, a new delay period for the tailgate starts (10 seconds). It is then once again alarmed if the rest of the alarm was armed.

Important

It is not possible to open the tailgate using the remote control if the ignition is on. On the other hand, this can be achieved with special programming.

(The following does not apply to anti-theft alarm systems for US/CA)

It is not possible to disarm the tailgate using the key. If the tailgate is opened with the key when the alarm is armed, it will be set off.

Manual control with car key, Anti-theft alarm US/CA

Disarming the theft alarm

With the car key in the door lock The anti-theft alarm can be armed and disarmed manually by inserting the car key in the door lock. Arming the theft alarm

1. When arming using the car key, this is inserted into the lock in the door and turned 45 degrees to the locked position.

2. A microswitch beside the door's lock cylinder sends a locking signal to the central locking system control module and a signal to the alarm control module (pin 17) to arm the alarm. The car doors are locked.

1. When disarming using the car key, this is inserted into the door lock and turned 45 degrees to the unlocked position.

2. The microswitch by the door lock cylinder sends an unlock signal to the central locking system control module and a signal to the alarm control module (pin 6) to disarm the alarm. The car doors are unlocked.

Disarming the tailgate

1. The tailgate alone can be disarmed and unlocked by means of the car key without affecting the rest of the alarm system. The flash/buzz acknowledgement of this function is programmable.

2. The microswitch in the luggage compartment lock supplies voltage to the luggage compartment lock motor so that this unlocks the tailgate, and sends a signal to the alarm control module (pin 15) to disarm the alarm.
