THE YOUNG SA pilot who died in aplane crash in Indonesia on Wednes-day was an avid surfer, diver and fish-erman from East London.
“JJ” Willis and his Australian pas-senger were killed when their SusiAir plane crashed in central Indone-sia in the airline’s third fatal accidentin a year.
The airline’s operations director,Christian Strombeck, said they hadbeen the only people on board thePilatus PC-6 aircraft, which was car-rying the Australian photographeron a chartered flight.
“The plane crashed on Wednesdayat around 5.30pm local time, and thebodies were found at around 1.30amyesterday,” he said.
“The Pilatus PC-6 aircraft was fly-ing in East Kalimantan to do someaerial photography when it crashed,”Strombeck added.
The airline identified the pilot asJonathan James Willis, 28, andIndonesian officials identified the pas-senger as Ian McDougall. The Aus-tralian government said he was 57.
“The passenger in the airplane senta text message to his office in Jakarta, more or less saying ‘there is a fuelproblem, we will try to make an emer-gency landing on a village road’,”Strombeck said.
“We estimate that the plane crashedtwo or three minutes after they sent themessage,” he said.
The plane crashed about 30kmfrom the remote village of MuaraRitan in Kutai Kartanegara district onthe island of Borneo, according to theairline and government officials.
“The aircraft crashed at the edge ofa ravine,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugro-ho, spokesman for the National Dis-aster Mitigation Agency.
The airline said it was investigating
the crash and grounding its six remain-ing single-engine Pilatus aircraft untilfurther notice.
“We still don’t know how it couldhave been a fuel problem. The fueltank was full and it was supposed tolast for seven hours.
“We don’t want to speculate at thispoint,” Strombeck said, adding thattheplane had flown for five hours.
Susi Air is a small domestic airlinethat operates mostly Cessna GrandCaravan planes, a few smaller Pilatusplanes and other aircraft. Many of itsflights are to remote and difficult
regions. In November, one of the company’s
Cessnas crashed while trying to landin Indonesia’s remote Papua region, killing a Spanish pilot.
Another of its aircraft crashed inSeptember in Papua province, killingan Australian and Slovakian pilot.
“It’s not easy to deal with an accidentlike this,” the airline’s owner, Susi Pud-jiastuti said in Jakarta after the latestcrash. “Sometimes I ask myselfwhether I should continue (flying todifficult areas) or quit,” she said.
The Indonesian archipelago of
more than 17 000 islands relies onair transport to reach remote areas andhas a poor aviation safety record.
Willis began working at Susi Air inApril last year and had recentlyenjoyed a spearfishing trip – for yearsone of his favourite pastimes – which he told his friends about onFacebook.
It is understood from a friend thathis family still lives at Kidd’s Beach inEast London.
One of Willis’s best friends, BruceViaene, posted on Facebook yesterday:“Still can’t believe it. Miss you bru.”
