ith the news headlines spreading the word about ‘Britain's

economy being in a worse state than we realise’, ‘economic growth slower than expected’ and ‘big cuts in spending’ keeping it local by supporting local businesses and our community seems to be particularly relevant. I hope that the new businesses still emerging in our area means we’re bucking the trend ‐ so let’s keep up the good work, get out there and spend our money as close to home as possible!

We’ll, you may be pleased to know I’m not planning to bang on about cycling this month! Apart from to say … Did any of you get to the end of the ‘Could you become a cycle commuter?’ Brompton article and think ‘this might just become my’ My what? Slight layout issue, I lost some text … it should have finished...

“So after speaking to Simon and Mark, having paid to park at Chesterfield station at £8 a day and having travelled on a train with my mountain bike, if I was

commuting regularly by train, this might just become my vehicle of choice? What do you think?”

he second Inkerman Buzz will take place on the Inkerman Park, Ashgate on Saturday 10 July, again focusing on sustainability.

We hope to have examples of solar panels, both commercial and self built, a wind turbine

and various other human powered displays. You will be able to grind your own flour and take it home too. Local community groups will be there and the Brampton Community Band will provide entertainment together with the Cock & Magpie Morris and Fred and Birgit Baker.

They’ll be no shortage of food as Steve Roberts from Amelia's Café, Chatsworth Road will have a cake stall, Sound bites organic cafe from Derby will be selling sandwiches and salads, Espresso2Go the mobile coffee maker will be attending, and Transition Chesterfield's vegetarian and organic meat BBQ will be busy as usual.

The Chesterfield 123 bus preservation group will again provide a free bus service from Walton Shops and the town centre. In addition the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign will lead a ride from Walton Shops departing at 11.00am. Oh and please do remember that there is no car parking provided ‐ please walk, cycle or use the bus to get there.

his month I met up with Peter Boardman of Somersall Financial Management Ltd, you’ll have seen his picture in

S40 Local.

>> About you?

“I’m an S40 Local reader living in Walton. I’m married to Carmen and we have 3 children, 2 at Walton & Holymoorside School and my youngest attends The Sunshine Nursery. I moved here in 1993 when I was working in Sheffield for Royal Insurance. I found I got better value for money in Chesterfield than in Sheffield, and I can’t think of a better place to bring up children, the facilities are great and we’re right on the edge of the Peak District.”

>> What’s your business background, how did you get into Wealth Management?

“I was working in retail management with one of the big high street names which required constant moves around the country as I progressed. I realised this was not an ideal lifestyle for me in the long term, especially when bringing up children, so in 1991 I decided a career change was in order and applied for a role with Royal Insurance who’s HQ is Liverpool (my home town), I was successful and they facilitated the move to self employment with their Agency Sales Division.

Over time I gained all the necessary regulatory qualifications and have held the Financial Planning Certificate since 1996. Presently I’m just one paper away from achieving the Diploma in Financial Planning which will be compulsory from December 2012. There’s a continuous requirement to upgrade our skills which I feel is very important when you’re charged with the responsibility of advising clients on how to invest their life savings.”

>> Have you been on West Bars long?

“In 1999 Royal Insurance, who at that point had merged with Sun Alliance, closed the agency division and they

helped me move to Independent Status. I formed Somersall Financial Management; I wanted the name to mean something and link us to the local community. In 2004 we were invited to join up with a prestigious wealth management group which we accepted. Our first premises were in Commerce House, within Hadfields Chartered Accountants offices. Together we offered a range of complementary products and services and it worked well until we outgrew the space in 2006, at which point I moved into West Bars House in Chesterfield centre.”

>> Many see finance as a necessary evil what appeals about it to you?

“There’s been a significant shift in the way Financial Services are provided, it’s no longer all about sales but about advice and a quality service. Compliance with the financial

regulations has pushed up the cost of operation and we’ve evolved into the Wealth Management arena. I really do get a sense of achievement out of assisting people with their business and personal finances, it’s vital that our clients are getting the best performance from their investments in a way that protects against taxation and inflation.

I really enjoy the people contact, it’s been great to build up relationships with clients over the years, we regularly hold breakfast clubs and wine tasting events to get everyone

together for some light hearted fellowship, this is also a good opportunity for our existing clients to introduce their friends and family to the business.”

>> Who are the team here?

“There is Michaela and Tracey in the Chesterfield office, and I also have support from a Business Development Manager within the group. Since 2004 we’ve accessed an exclusive range of great products and services and business has developed nicely.”

>> Times are difficult for us all at present what impact has the recession had on your business?

“Recession isn’t all bad news for our clients as the record low interest rates have presented us with some great opportunities for investment. Potential new clients have been seeking advice, sometimes for the first time and we’ve been able to help them find the best solutions.”

>> You’ve talked about the importance of community, do you actively support the community?

“Yes I recently sponsored the fixture card for the Barbarians Cricket Club, and also the junior section of the Chesterfield Golf Club. Our group Foundation enabled us to make a significant contribution to Ashgate Hospice, and we also help out one of

the local schools with their work

Q2. Favourite place to go for a walk or escape from it all? “We’re huge fans of the outdoors and any opportunity I like to get down to our caravan in Devon. But if I’ve just a few hours then I can be found at the Golf Club!”

Q3. Best thing about the community around you? “It’s a great place to bring up our children, and being so close to the Peak District is really important to us.”

ou can expect lots of pictures of this man and his wife opening things, attending events and showing support for

local initiatives this year.

In March I attended a meeting chaired by Councillor Keith Morgan and on May 12th Keith became our Mayor. Keith agreed to sit down for a coffee as I have to admit that I’m one of those folk who doesn’t really understand what the Mayor does and the role he plays ‐ here’s what I found out.

>> About you? – Family, where do you live and what’s your background?

“I was born in Sheffield in 1948 at Jessops Hospital. My childhood spent in the market town of Retford and on leaving school I started work at the General Descaling Co. in Worksop, in the Export Department. I met Pat my wife in 1968 and we moved to Chesterfield in 1980 where I was Head of English at Middlecroft School. My council career started out when I became a Liberal Party member in 1973 and was elected to Liberal Democrat Councillor in 1995. In 2003 I was offered the post of Lead Member for Sustainability and Environmental Services, then in 2007 I exchanged this for the portfolio for Healthy Communities and Leisure. 2005 saw me elected to County Councillor for the Hipper Division of Chesterfield. I live in Walton in the heart of the Hipper Division.”

>> How do you become Mayor?

“I didn’t set out to become Mayor. In the Chesterfield Borough the role is a civic role, the offer of Mayor goes to the longest serving councillor. It’s not a role you have to accept and to fulfil my duties I have stepped down from other roles.”

>> What are your responsibilities?

“Primarily as the Mayor I am the first citizen of the Borough of Chesterfield. Additionally I work to promote Chesterfield within the UK in business, education, tourism, commerce,

economic development and within our twinned towns. Twinning gives us the opportunity to promote Chesterfield as a destination through exchanges and visits etc, just visit Troyes where you can buy Cheese Factor cheeses in the heart of France.

I also have the opportunity to nominate a charity each year for which I will help raise funds and awareness. I have chosen Fairplay and Samaritans. Fairplay was set up on Chatsworth Road by a group of parents of children with disabilities. The group supports children and

young people with sensory, physical, learning and behavioural disabilities and additional needs. My appeal this year will focus on raising funds to help with equipment for the new Fairplay Garden.

I chair council meetings, a post that exists above the party politics, but I do have final vote in the event of a tied decision should the need arise.”

>> Is this your only job?

“This year it’s all about my Mayoral duties, having stepped down from my old post to do so. I am Councillor for

Walton Ward and County Councillor for the Hipper Division in addition so there is plenty to occupy my time.”

Ed: I’m slightly confused what’s the difference between the Borough and County roles?

“The Borough runs the low cost mandatory items and the non‐mandatory items. They look after your bins, local planning, leisure etc, the County Council is responsible for all the high cost mandatory items such as policing, hospitals and health, education, highways etc. It’s not always a clear division and people are often not aware of who does what.”

>> Rudy Giuliani (Mayor of New York) is credited for “quality of life initiatives” and being responsible for improvements and reduction in crime, is this something UK mayors can realistically achieve? “In some towns yes, but not here in Chesterfield. As I said earlier the Mayor is a civic role so the rules of longest serving councillor apply, in the towns where a mayor is elected by the community they have more budgetary power. We have 12 elected Mayors, the best known of which is Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.”

>> Closer to home, our readers come from Ashgate, Brampton, Brookside, Holymoorside, Somersall and Walton. What’s on your agenda that’ll impact or improve the lives of our readers?

“I live in Walton and am one of S40’s readers, I support our local churches and regularly attend St Thomas’, I’m governor at Parkside school and actively look to involve the local businesses in my charity initiatives.

On 24th June we’ll be launching a fund raising event at Northern Tea Merchants, I presented ceramics from Clare Gage at Troyes recently and I’m constantly looking at ways to involve the businesses around Chesterfield, and I get great support from the local businesses on my doorstep along Chatsworth Road. Having said this I am fully aware that as Mayor my horizons cover the whole borough.”

>> In your view, what are the best things about S40 (and Chesterfield)?

“Chesterfield is the largest village in the country, it has an intimacy and friendliness about it and there is huge opportunity for growth. Having said this it’s not a city, cities have an impartiality about them. Chesterfield is identifiable by it’s boundaries and despite the recession it seems to have weathered the storm well and be flourishing, and we’ve become a great tourism centre with 500 coaches coming in to visit the town.”

>> What would you like to leave as your Mayor legacy to Chesterfield?

“Most people in Chesterfield know Ashgate Hospice and what it does. If I can help create the same level of awareness about the Fairplay charity I will feel I have delivered something worthwhile, it’s a great local cause and needs our support.”

Q1. Favourite place to go for a meal?

“This very much depends on the time of day and our mood, we might go to Northern Tea Merchants for a morning coffee, Koo or Amelias for lunch or an evening meal at Nonsolovino or the Poachers Rest. Oh and of course there’s always the Rose and Crown for quick real Ale.”

Q2. Favourite place to go for a walk or escape from it all?

“I love a stroll round Somersall Park and am a member of the Robinsons Bowls Club based at Walton Dam which is a lovely oasis set between the two busy trunk roads.”

Q3. Best thing about the community around you?

“I can’t leave the house without someone giving me a friendly greeting or stopping for a chat, it’s a great place with a strong community spirit.”

Fairplay aims to increase services for all children and young people and their parents and carers through playschemes, activity days, youth clubs and support groups.

ith the combination of rain, warmer temperatures and lighter days, everything should now be looking green and lush in your garden. Ten things to do this month include:

1. Make sure any new plants, hanging baskets and plants in containers have enough water.

2. Keep hoeing your flower beds and veggie plot to keep weeds under control.

3. Pick courgettes before they become too big.

4. Tie up climbing plants as they grow.

5. Whilst it's dry give gates, furniture and fences a fresh lick of paint.

6. Plant Autumn flowering bulbs.

7. Move garden furniture around regularly to prevent yellow patches on your lawn.

8. Give your beach, conifer and hawthorn hedges a trim, but hold off on any holly bushes.

9. Dead head bedding plants and repeat flowering perennials.

n the last few issues you may have noticed an advert from ‘Middle East Foods’? They are a new business who have established themselves in

Somersall so I thought a quick chat might be in order to find out what they do and how it all works.

Kifah Jassim has always been passionate about food, starting at a young age cooking at home and for family events. In 1993 they located themselves in Chesterfield and struggled to find an authentic dining experience. “We’ve tried Middle Eastern themed restaurants locally and further afield, from Manchester to Paris and we haven’t yet found truly authentic quality food as I was taught to prepare it at home, so that’s why we’ve set ourselves up in business. All my learning is based on experience, and I didn’t want to run a restaurant, so decided to set up this personal service, preparing quality food using the best locally sourced

fresh ingredients, and delivering authentic Middle Eastern meals for you to enjoy in your own home.”

Sounds good and I learnt that so far they are exclusive to S40 Local readers, trialling the service and fine‐tuning to make sure they get it right. So far they’ve had some really positive feedback and have orders in place for the coming weeks.

So are they a takeaway or is there more to it? “Because of the service we offer, we need you to place your order, at least by midday on the day you require the food, and if you can pre‐plan that’s even better. Everything we do is fresh and we are only a small business, but if you would like to try a new culinary experience, why not try the meal

Know Your Dishes: “Tebboleh”, a Levantine salad dish of parsley, burgol wheat, mint, tomato, spring onion, cucumber, lettuce, herbs and dressing. One of the most popular Middle Eastern Salads.

“Maqloobeh” (or Upside Down), this is a classic and probably one of the most famous Palestinian dishes. Everybody loves it! Spicy lamb, vegetables and rice. “Tabssi”, layers of fried slices of aubergine, onions and tomatoes oven baked in a thick tomato sauce with various spices.

his month I continue the sporting theme with a brief look at Derbyshire County Cricket Club. I’ve also negotiated an

exclusive £4 discount offer to encourage you to support your local team.

The picturesque surroundings of Queen's Park (S40 postcode) will see 11 days of county cricket in 2010 as Derbyshire County Cricket Club continues to embrace one of the world's best loved first‐class cricket venues.

Some historic moments. The first County Cricket match in Queen’s Park was Derbyshire and Surrey, in 1898 ‐ the same year the Cricket Pavilion was opened. Derbyshire's first victory on the ground came a little later in 1900 when Worcestershire were beaten by 57 runs.

In 1904, the famous cricketer WG Grace played at Queen's Park in a match between Derbyshire and London County. In the same year probably Derbyshire’s 'greatest' ever match took place, P A Perrin of Essex

scored 343 not out (272 in boundaries) in a first innings total of 597 but ended up on the losing side as Derbyshire matched the first innings score, and then bowled Essex out for 97. West Indian Charles Olivierre scored 229 and 92 not out as Derbyshire won the match by nine wickets. The legendary Don Bradman, the man many consider to have been the best batsman of all time, played here when the Australians toured England in the 1930s. In 1998 the ground celebrated a century of first class use.

My personal favourite memory goes back to when Derbyshire overcame Sussex in the 1969 semi‐final of the Gillette Cup to reach Lords. Derbyshire batted first and posted a meagre total of just 136 from 60 overs on a rain soaked wicket. Most in the ground thought the result would be a formality. Instead Sussex were soon five wickets down with just 29 on the

board and all out for 49 thanks to superlative bowling from Alan Ward, Fred Rumsey and the man of the match, Peter Eyre, who claimed six wickets and his best ever bowling performance. Queen’s Park hosted almost 11,000 ecstatic fans that July day; that attendance won’t be bettered but we’re hoping the current team can provide thrills of the same quality.

John Hampshire, a former test batsman, and John Arlott the commentator both rightly called Queen's Park 'the loveliest ground in the country', however, bad weather (which in turn meant poor income) and poor facilities, particularly for sponsors, prompted Derbyshire to

So how are our local cricket club, based at Walton Dam, doing so far this season?

The senior teams have had a mixed start to the season, all languishing mid table or thereabouts. The Sunday Blues, led by Jon Denby are currently doing the best of the bunch and are third in their league.

Juniors Hardball: The Under 15 Blues, Under 13's and Under 11 White are so far unbeaten and are at the top of their leagues. The Under 11 Blues won 1 lost 1; Under 12 won 2 lost 1 and the Under 15 Whites won 0 lost 3.

Kwik cricket: Under 11 Bats won 3 and are 2nd in league; Under 11 Blizzards won 1; Under 10 Bats won 2 ; Under 10 Blizzards won 4; Under 10 Hawks and Eagles are yet to win.

Back to today. Thankfully that gap in continuity is now a distant memory, but to ensure Chesterfield continues to host top class cricket it does need you to support your county side. And what could be a greater incentive than cheering the lads on against our closest rivals Yorkshire in the one dayer on Sunday 8 August. To use an old but very relevant adage “Use it or lose it” – the Borough Council wants to see Derbyshire maintain a strong base in the town but ultimately that lies with you the sporting public.
